    • "Grab your towel, get reading and Don't Panic!!" - That sounds like the description of an Ozb session

The book is great reading but get the DVD if you enjoy SciFi at its best and funniest OP.

Not the American version which butchers the story but the original English version.

    • I was about to but in and correct you on the "…SciFi at its best and funniest…" then I read the second line. My apologies at jumping to conclusions, you are correct sir… Have a "+" vote :D

I listened to the BBC Hitchhiker's Guide radio serial as wide-eyed kid.
Preceded the book. Both full of wonder.

G'day Dne, good to catch you coming out of self-imposed exile! Or is it just Spring Time, emerging from hibernation? :-)
Anyway, hope you are keeping well.

Also find time to ponder this, in case you missed reading about that!

Fascinating indeed … I actually watched this - BBC The Sky at Night 2019 | Cosmology in Crisis ?, which discusses this in a rather accessible manner, for a layperson like myself.

:) A bit above temperature for hibernating. That's more of a Melbourne thing..
Though not today, a pretty nice day in forecast for you.

I also grew up on HHGttG Radio Plays and from there the books, personally not a fan of the TV series or the abomination that was the Disney movie… (I don't care that DNA was involved in the script writing!)

I own both this kit as well as a copy of the original series… This new version was a no brainer as it includes the radio play versions of the 3rd, 4th and 5th books that were broadcast in the early-mid 2000's.
If you haven't heard the new radio plays, I highly recommend them.
Most of the original cast returned to record them and the audio effects and script quality is superbly matched to that of the original series'.

Righto, I keep forgetting you live in the subtropics. No watching titanic battle between winter and spring each year (as I cheer for spring, of course! :-))

@bluesky: A nice little piece of Disney history there, bluesky. Thanks for that.

A very different piece of history for you, and may lead you feel just a bit better about living in your chilly Melbourne…

The best history lessons are quirky ones, bluesky. This very quirky, but amazing.
Important figure in experimental music, was Holger.

One or other upload of second track, have been meaning to sneakily link on OzBargain for years :) Mods and power users just too quick off the mark with edits to deals absent pricing, though.
PJC used to be quick off the mark, too, until he killed an overpriced aliexpress dropshipper in cold blood. I think that's what must have happened. It was inevitable, I suppose… :(

@[Deactivated]: No doubt about you, when it comes to weird and wonderful music sometimes off the mainstream? :-)

I ended up checking not just your links, but the entire Rome Remains Rome album. Some really interesting juxtaposition of (unexpected!) sounds. Quite a few I find myself liking, but I particularly like Blessed Easter. Thanks :-)

@bluesky: Pleased that you enjoyed those, or at least found them interesting.
Enjoy your upcoming Spring weather or at least find some of those days, interesting… Will improve at some point bluesky, take heart.
                :)

OP, read the book by all means. But if you want to enjoy the full comedic effect of HHGTTG, the radio or TV series is a must. After all, the radio series was what started it all in 1978, and based on its success, the book and TV series (6 episodes) followed. And more recently (2005), a movie.

Dne provided the links to the radio series above. However, if you prefer to watch rather than listen, then watch the 1981 TV series. It retains a lot of the flavour of the radio series. A number of the principal casts are in fact the same in both:

    The Book (Peter Jones)
    Arthur Dent (Simon Jones)
    Zaphod Beeblebrox (Mark Wing-Davey)
    Marvin (Stephen Moore)

Being the classic that it is, over time, it is easy to enjoy all the forms it comes in. In fact, this post just made me want to re-listen or re-watch it again in coming days.

I found the 2005 movie starring Martin Freeman less enjoyable compared to the TV or radio series. Among other things, Marvin (Android) is too cute and slick; does not look depressed enough :-)
