  • I bought a set of the globes last time. They work great with Google Home, but I'm having no luck getting them going with Home Assistant

    • Home Assistant as in Apple? They don't work with HomeKit from what I understand. Only Google and Alexa.

      • No, Home assistant as in the open source home automation centre. Runs on a raspberry pi and talks to hundreds of different devices: https://www.home-assistant.io/

If you have half a dozen different apps to control your devices chances are you could centralise it all in the one app with Home assistant.

It has a very customisable front end and powerful automation capability.

    • There was an issue with the Tuya cloud integration that seems to have reappeared with v0.98.2

      v0.98.1 is supposed to work.

      • i'm running HA .0.96.0 and Mirabella Genio (smartlife) from kmart

      • Haven't got my downlights to work with 0.98.1 or .2. Only picks up the scenes, no devices.

  • Damn. It looks like I gotta get another smart bulb app after having both hue and yeelight apps installed in my phone

I know technologies make life easier.

  • I bought a smart bulb from kmart (mirabella genio), how do these compare to them?

    • both can use tuya and smartlife. but seem this 2 brands use different firmware to communicate with Tuya or Smartlife server. People reporting have problem with HA. but i don't have the problem with Mirabella

  • +1

Noob question but with the smart downlights do I need to keep the wall switch turned on?

In case of power outage + restore will all lights then turn on?

    • +1

it will restore to on when power back on

    • I wondered exactly the same!

  • What are standard downlights nowadays?

    Is the 9W 740lm bright?
On a white light (not warm)

    • A standard downlight was a 50W halogen light that in theory is around the 600lm mark, but that varied a lot depending on factors such as coverage angles, bulb age, efficiency…. but 740lm should be fine as long as they are not being overly optimistic…. and if it's too bright, you can dim them. FWIW In general it is normal to use warm lights in a residential home - white lights tend to be too cold and 'clinical' looking.

  • Would love to see their GU10 smart bulbs at Aldi. A fair bit cheaper than the Philips option. Or even if they could get them on Amazon or something..!

  • is there any kind of smartswitch you can get so if its turned off at powerpoint it can still turn on?

    • +1

But how would it get power then?!

  • Anyone know the beam angle and CRI on the downlights? Also, do they seal tightly with ceiling. Not gimble?

    IC4 fire rating?

    • +1

      https://www.brilliantsmart.com.au/smart-products/lighting/sm…

That's all we know specs wise.

Not gimble, nothing open to ceiling.

IC4 yes, angle and CRI are not specified but looks typical for these sort of lights, >120 degrees.

If I had to guess probably a CRI between 80 and 90, not top quality LEDs inside but they aren't terrible.

Best to try em out, return if you don't like.

      • Thanks for the info.

Says dimmable only via app or voice control, so presumably no interface with existing dimmer switches. Bit of a deal breaker for me. May still buy one to confirm.

        • Dimming with the app will always yield a much better result as it is dimming via dc voltage and not ac as is the case with most existing dimmer switches on the wall.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yep, but less convenient when they are being dimmed often, or when visiting grandparents want to use etc.

        • +2

Correct, these won't work with physical dimmers.

The downside to these wifi only lights is the lack of physical controls. At least with the Hue ecosystem there's switches available.

I ended up getting Logitech Pop's for the LIFX I have in the kids rooms, though they don't support these lights.

We use voice control to dim these which works well enough, but getting a phone out everytime would be a PITA.

  • I just saw the 3 rgb globes pack at local aldi last Sunday. I don't remember the price. Is this deal not not available until 13 Sept?

Would these globes works straight in the light housing and mobile app without needing a hub?

    • Potentially left over from the last one?

Yeah they will. They connect via 2.4ghz wifi, so no extra hardware needed (other than your regular wireless router/AP)

  • I recently bought a house which has 12 downlights which I find to be so bright that I almost never use them.

Would I be better off replacing them with 12 of these so I can dim them via google home, or getting a dimmer switch installed to adjust the existing downlights?

    • I am thinking about that too but the only issue we have 20 downlights so not sure if I want to change all of them in one go.. might try 3 to start with changing kitchen lights and go from there.

      • If these are halogen maybe you can take advantage of the Free changeover scheme to LED downlights

        • If these are halogen

You mean the existing lights? No, they are LEDs - I don't know how people used to afford using halogen lights in past.

  • +3

In case anyone is still reading this.. last week I bought a couple of the Mirabella Genio bulbs at Woolworths for $15 ea. They are 9W LED and come in ES and BC, Warm or Cool White.
you can pair them with the Genio App or the SmartLife App. I used the SmartLife App which supports more personal assistants.
I have Amazon Alexa and I added the skill and had the lights working in no time at all.

I use one as a bedroom lamp so when one of us goes to bed early they can dim the light. I plan to use the other one in an outdoor fitting so I can turn on the outside light when I drive in at night, so I don't have to leave the outside light on.

The downside is they do require connectivity to the internet to work with the app or digital assistant, but you can turn them off and on at the power switch and they come back on as they were previously set. (of course you can't use the app when they are turned off at the wall). It is possible to flash their firmware over the air to make them work with home automation solutions - as they are basically an ESP8266 and LEDs in a light bulb package. But for the time being I am happy to use them as they are.

    Hope that clears it up.

    Dan

    • My googling seem to suggest that the Brilliant lights are made by Mirabella or are the same.

  • Just so everyone knows, I beleive this promotion is because of how badly these sold the first time. I have been told stores will not be receiving additional stock and it's basically what each store has at present. Some stores are actually sold out. Most are sold out of downlights.

    • That doesn't sound right - PS. I didn't neg you!

      • Well two different store managers at too different locations said this.

Certainly expect they prob won't be topping up the spotlights and garden lights, as these have barely sold at all.

        • won't be topping up the spotlights and garden lights

That make sense but should def be getting the wifi downlight as its hardly in stock in any of their store

        • +1

You were spot on mate, no stock in my local store and the store manager confirmed that they were clearance of the stock they received 6 weeks ago. What a bummer!

          • @IMadeYouReadThis: I went to a couple of stores, same story. None got new stock in, most had barely anything left at all (ACCC complaint anyone?)

Interestingly at one store I was told that stock was arriving on Wednesday and that it was mis-advertised. I'm not sure about that one, but may be worth checking your local on Wednesday. None of the other stores could confirm the same thing.

            • +1

@bamzero: Yeah pretty bad advertisement by Aldi if they were not going to get new stock, I am not holding my breath for Wednesday as the store manager of my store confirmed that they are unlikely to get these lights again.

              • @IMadeYouReadThis: I got mine, 13 of them from 2 different stores. One store surely received new stock

  • Wonder if I can get some advice on how these actually work.

From looking at the IKEA and LIFX ones they seem to connect via a hub which I don't want.
Although I'm not 100% sure the Ikea ones do… they seem to have a remote option

Essentially I want a bulb that I can control with a remote, and not have to rewire a switch. Don't want to fuss around with Apps either, unless it's just for setup.

We basically have put up a gyprock wall dividing a large room and now lights in the two rooms are on the same switch.

Can I leave this switch on at all times, but put one of these downlights with one remote (wall mounted to act as a wall switch) in one room and a bulb with another remote in the other room?
I assume they pair individually somehow, but that only one remote comes with the 3 pack of bulbs.

To put a whole new wire and switch in is a serious PITA because of access to wiring.

    Thanks

    • This would be possible if you ordered a tuya compatible light switch. I haven't seen one available locally, only on eBay / AliExpress.

These do not require a hub and run through the tuya ecosystem

The IKEA ones require a hub.

    • Lifx globes do not require a hub.

  • One of my bulbs from the last sale stopped connecting to my wifi. Looking to get a refund and buying the 3pack again for cheaper though.

They are definitely not as good as the Yeelights because of the aforementioned brightness inconsistencies but for about $13 a bulb, it's a pretty good deal especially with 2yrs Aussie warranty

  • Aldi website ad has a link to the Product Information from Brilliant, which says 5 year warranty. However, Aldi ad says 2 years. Confusing whats applicable!

    • Yeh it's a little confusing. I thought it was 5 years looking at the website.

However, there are 2 part numbers:

      Product Code (Trilogy): 20695/05
      Product Code (PLU10415): 20742/05

The Aldi ones are 20742/05 and have 2 years printed on the box. The PLU 10415 is also the same code on the Aldi receipt, so I'm guessing is the same light packaged for Aldi or other resellers but with 2 year warranty.

It's more misleading on Brilliant's part that they only mention 5 years warranty on the website and specs sheet.

  • can we change the color (RGB) of the wifi downlights? The description says they are only Dimmable and colour changing from warm to daylight.

    • Only colour temp on the downlights.

  • +1

Either no stock at my local or all sold out…..

  • I got all the remaining stock (3x pack of globes and 4x downlights) from my Aldi except for the security spotlight which there were about 8 left and the garden lights (2 left).

The staff said that these were the remaining stock from the last sale and were just further discounting them to get rid of it.

  • FWIW: Globes, garden, and security lights in the locked glass case in Aldi Southland…. no downlights.

  • Anyone have issues connecting to the devices via their phone? Keeps saying "Connection timed out" if added manually, and doesn't pop up at all for automatic.

    • Yep the latest update broke it. I found an older version from one of the APK sites that worked again

      • Is that with the Brilliant app, or Smart Life or Tuya?

Might be at Tuya's end too. I tried adding one to the Tuya app, was having issues manually adding, but eventually automatic picked it up.

    • FWIW I couldn't add the security light in to either the tuya or brilliant apps - kept timing out. I tried setting up my local wifi AP so it was only using 2.4 not both 2.4 and 5ghz, but no help. I then noticed on the Tuya app after a couple of failed tries it asking if I wanted to try local mode. That's when I checked and found that the thing was operating as an AP. I connected to that and it then finally configured properly.

      • Yeh there are 2 modes, EZ and AP mode. Slow flash is AP mode, fast flash is EZ mode. Of course none of this is mentioned in the Brilliant manual.

You can switch between modes with the reset sequence, power cycling 3 times within 10 seconds (don't do it too fast or it doesn't seem to work) Just keep running the sequence till you get to the mode you want.

(Discovered this by accident when I first tested them plugged into a powerboard with a bad connection that kept going on and off. Afterwards I found the Tuya FAQ)

      • Hey, which device did U choose in the Tuya application? Nothing really falls under security light..

  • Anyone looking for downlights? I found some at my local store so happy to buy and help the fellow OzBargainer :)

    • Interested in smart downlights at the moment. 50 of them..

      • I don't think any store had that many the first time round, would have had to do a run-around back then. I'd say chance is slim to none now…

JD Lighting was selling them for $28.99 last time, maybe talk to them about a bulk order.

        • I tried a few Aldi today, but no luck - happy to go to few stores and get like 20 initially to do downstairs.

Thanks for the tip about JD Lighting. Was that for Brilliant 9W? It seem to be 49 at the moment, but might send them an email and ask..

      • They don't seem to be available in any store now. Best to email Aldi and ask if any of the surrounding store has this in stock.

PS. I Pm'ed JD rep a while ago but never got a response.

  • Finally installed 11 downlights, they work a treat with Alexa!

    • Yeah me too. Very happy with them and working like a charm. Bought 2 extra for backup too

      • +1

Bought 2 extra for backup too

Great minds thinks alike, I did the same :D

        • :D

At this price, no second thoughts mate. Can you imagine, wife was on board too.

          • @ashftc: That is unbelievable, my wife was fully supportive of this transition too… Last time I bought bunch of Lifx lights she went all bonkers, but this time, no fuss at all :D

  • Check in the glass display cabinet in the front of the Aldi store. I found the brilliant products in there.

  • The three packs of bulbs are down to $19.99 for the pack of you can find them in stock!

    • Not nationwide, I was just at Aldi, Gilles Plains. Still $39.99

Does anyone know if the garden lights can be set to each a different color, or are they all the same color once you change it in the app?

      • Just visited 2 different Aldis and they had them for $19.99. Was thinking of getting them but I don't really care for smart lights tbh. Don't see the convenience at all.

        • Might have to check tomorrow then. $19 for 3 smart lights isn't a bad deal. Hopefully the garden lights are on sale too.

        • My local aldi SEQ BNE , has them at 39.99

the store rep reckon it should be same price nationwide

and he's willing to match it if i can show them receipt $19.99

do you have receipt by any chance ? thanks!

    • My local aldi SEQ BNE , has them at 39.99

the store rep reckon it should be same price nationwide

and he's willing to match it if i can show them receipt $19.99

do you have receipt by any chance ? thanks!

  • For anyone still following this, looks like might be possible to flash OTA again?

  • Can anyone still playing at home confirm if the garden spotlights are also on sale and how much?

  • Edit: can confirm, still $39.99 for thr lights in SA.

    • Same for BNE SEQ.

I guess only NSW different price

but the store rep reckon it should be same price nationwide

and he's willing to match it if i can show them receipt $19.99
