I've been tempted to get these, and now even more. Other than looking like a fool when using them, and unless you've got a 'spotter' illegal to use.

  • It's $449

    • RRP is $549, but yes Amazon sell it for $449. Don't think NatGeo sold it for $449 though.

    • Use the link in OP. Australian Geographic still has it for 299. Amazon has increased the price.

      • You get a 404 error when you try to access the $299.

  • Damn, I was trying to buy it and they've pulled the ad and it's not on their site either!!! Guess it was a pricing error.

  • I have used these (as a "passenger" while someone else flew the aircraft) and I can safely say they're absolutely amazing. Exceptional image quality and a very immersive experience.

It's a shame they're effectively illegal for their intended use in Australia.

I'd comment on how ridiculous Australia's drone laws are, but we're one of an increasingly shrinking list of countries that still lets you fly drones without a masters degree in Aeronautical Mathematics.

      • Honestly, Australia's drone laws aren't too bad. They're a natural reaction to the real risks we've seen.

Radio-controlled aircraft have been in our skies since the 1980's with very few incidents. It's the addition of electronic stabilization and streaming video, combined with retail marketing that made RC aircraft accessible to thousands of children and thoughtless, irresponsible idiots that's caused the problem.

It should be a legal requirement to complete an educational course before being permitted to purchase a UAV larger than 100g. That would immediately remove 90% of the idiots, who buy them on impulse or as presents for their kids.

        • And hence we now have mandatory registration, which encourages people to be responsible as they can be identified should something happens….

          • @Buy2Much: Except the people that do the wrong thing won't register them so the end result is hundreds of millions of dollars wasted once more to achieve nothing.

            • @Maverick-au: It's like guns or cars or anything that need registrations. There will be people who don't do it, but they are breaking the law and have to face the consequences if caught.

              • @Buy2Much: They won't get caught however, go to any Bogan neighbourhood and you'll see cheap drones flying outside line of site on a regular basis. Given we don't police so many other laws now and that police don't patrol pretty much anywhere how will they be caught? If one crashes on a roof will the police investigate? What about one that causes a minor car accident?

This country has far too many laws that are not enforced so let's not add more as they only affect people that would do the right thing in the first place.

        • It should be a legal requirement to complete an educational course before being permitted to purchase a UAV larger than 100g.

You don't have to complete am educational course to get your driver's license but you want one for a drone! What about radio controlled cars? What about home made UAVs? What about mail-order UAVs? What about UAVs sold at markets or privately? What about UAVs from overseas? What about stolen UAVs (should UAV safes be mandatory)?

What you have proposed is unworkable and hundreds of millions a year in costs which we have to pay.

You can give someone a joy ride with it while you retain the control with the remote. Or you can fly it while someone else is having main control with the remote. I believe that's legal. And yes, it's the best one for its genre in the market (I also have the Yuneec version for the Yuneec drone, less features). $478 is not a bad price considering they were $650 a year ago.
P.S. Spare a thought for our American cousins. DJI US has just increased their prices by 13% a day ago because of Trump's 15% tariff on Chinese made electronics. No doubt other brands will follow. Who says Aussies are getting a raw deal on electronics products now?
