  • Any good for a Plex streamer? Not fussed about transcoding.

    • +2

NVIDIA shield would probs cost less total and apparently is an excellent Plex streamer option with either a NAS or direct storage attached.

      • Nah not going down the Shield as a server route. I had a Shield, gave it away (though might get another one as a Plex client).
I have about 40TB worth of disks, so want a PC.

buy this then, buy a NAS case and throw this in with a mini itx mobo

          • @HKS:

            • 1 to this

built a few with mini-itx and using the inwin Chopa case

      • I think he means server not player

    • +3

It should have plenty of grunt for transcoding and streaming - it's a relatively high clock speed, and the Vega integrated graphics are very capable.

If you want a turn-key solution, you can buy a complete PC (with this processor) on eBay for less than $500.

      • Yeah not a bad option, actually. I'll just buy the case I want on top of that. Cheers!

      • Hi Klaw, sorry any examples here? Keen to setup a Plex server to feed my Xbox One X Plex client and I'm liking the sound of this.

          Here's a couple options:

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMD-Ryzen-3-3200G-4-0GHz-8GB-240…
          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMD-Ryzen-3-3200G-4-0GHz-8GB-RAM…
          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMD-Ryzen-3-3200G-Max-4GHz-Gamin…

Please note I am not affiliated with any of these stores, they're just the three suitable listings I got from an eBay search.

However, I actually bought a similar machine from FTC (the 2nd one of the above listings) last week and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the build and the speed of delivery. It's not the ideal RAM speed, and the brand names are not exactly household names, but it does the job I need it for.

Also, with a free eBay Plus trial, you can get a significant discount using the PEACHY voucher, which is crazy cheap for the level of performance.

          Enjoy!

          • @klaw81: That's awesome thanks mate for listing those, and great to hear that you've bought a machine from one of the sellers, I've already got ebay plus and amazing discount on top of the already great pricing.. I'm not fussed with brand names just want it to do Plex transcode (those damn subtitle files!) and some storage/cloud backup. Decisions decisions..

I am using one in my W10 media server. It is perfectly fine for this task.

    Just need cheap AM4 mobo…

    • There's still stock around of older B, A and X3/4 series out there.

No way am I spending several hundred bucks on a X5 series mobo for a CPU this weak (compared to say, my 3900X)

    • $69 asrock a320m-hdv

  • I've been out of touch re Intel vs AMD. How are these CPUs these days?

    • +2

As of this year, it's primarily AMD is the CPU of choice

      • Holy crap, that's new. I'll have to read up on it, cheers

  • I built a PC with this processor earlier this year, does well on older games although usually can't get 4K resolution without some choppiness, lowering to 1440p can often fix this. Note that 2MB of RAM will be allocated for the GPU (not sure if Linux does this) so definitely buy 8MB or more RAM.

    • 2MB of RAM

      hmm… back to 386's time

Lol, just came out of a time machine from the early 90s.

  • Would go and actually went with 3200G over this and I am happy with my decision. Overclocks like hell with no problem.
