    hugs my 10tb

  • +6

At $25 per terabyte this is some of the cheapest storage available.

I dont need this but I want this so bad. What is it about high capacity storage that gets my credit card juices flowing…

    • -1

US or AU $25? If US it's like AU $37 right? Still a good price.

    • +1

      Does pricing error count?

      • +3

We shall all remember the sad day when literally 1000 of our orders got cancelled

        • But $30 gift cards per order wasn't bad.

  • I know we can shuck these - will the 8tb drives work nicely in the QNAP TS-431P2 advertised earlier?

    • Yes.

      • +1

        What disk model inside those?

        • WD80EMAZ White Label Helium drives.

  • +1

anyone know the exact model of the wd drive inside?

    • Most likely WD80EMAZ.

      • so most likely a wd red? did a quick google on that number

        • +1

These are the very similar white label drives. They haven't put reds or blues in the 8-10tb element drives for a while

          • @mec: I read in a forum somewhere someone shucked and tested one of these white labels and confirmed they are essentially red drives. because of the cache? I think. im not very good with the diiferences between drives

            • +1

@razorite: You're right. I'm just nitpicking. But Red and White label drives have a different warranty process ie, keeping the casing and not breaking anything to keep the warranty + White label drives have the 3.3v pin different so it may need some extra modification to run on older PSU's (if shucked) although taping the 3rd pin isn't that hard

      • The 2 I purchased in Februry this year were this type of drive; I hope that hasn't changed. They are apparently slowed down Hitachi Helium filled drives (a big white label on the back). They are a bit of a nuisance to shuck compared to Seagate extrernals.

The main thing I want for non-system drives is real non-shingled HDDs because they don't slow down during re-writes. Seagate seems to be increasingly embracing shingling.

        • +1

I have no clue what shingling is will have to do a bit of reading. thanks for the new word haha

  • Can you shunk the drive in this one,?

    • +1

*Shuck, and I would also like to know, is there a website where they have a database of what external hard drives can be shucked or not? That'd be fantastic.

      • +2

reddit.com/r/datahoarder always has a post or user that has checked if the drives are shuckable.

I can confirm these ones are shuckable. You will need to research the 3.3v pin trick though

    • +1
    • I did it myself answer is yeas u can

    • I bought one of these on 17 August 2019 (for $25 more) and shucked it, inside mine was, according to smartctl:

      Device Model: WDC WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0
      Firmware Version: 83.H0A83
User Capacity: 8,001,563,222,016 bytes [8.00 TB]
Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical
      Rotation Rate: 5400 rpm
      Form Factor: 3.5 inches
      ATA Version is: ACS-2, ATA8-ACS T13/1699-D revision 4
      SATA Version is: SATA 3.2, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 6.0 Gb/s)

Installed it into my server with no difficulties. Shucking is straight-forward, requires using an old credit card and maybe a knife or screwdriver to prise open the plastic.

  • There might be a warranty void issue if not being well shucked.

    • +8

      Awww, shucks!

    • +1

It was a bit of a scary process making sure that flimsy case didn't snap the first time haha

  • Hold off, hold off…

    • im on the edge. 50/50

  • To buy or not to buy! This is the question!

  • +1

    Yoink

  • +1

Missed these the last couple of times….not this time!!

  • Seems to be US stock, so you might don't get warranty locally

    • You get 3 months from amazon.

  • I missed the 10TB but that was 100 more. Hmm. Can't decide.

  • If I'm buying from Oz there is a 10% GST on top of $204.24 + $18.61 Delivery? Thanks.

    • +3

The price is GST included, and you're better sign up with Amazon Prime for one month ($6.99/month) than pay the $18.61 delivery.

      • Thank-you.

      • +1

I always love these tricks of gaming the system. Amazon Prime is monthly, unlike Ebay where you have to folk out for an entire year.

  • Will Jb price match this? I have JB gift cards.

    • +1

      No, Amazon US

  • +1

I love the $110 Au tax for AU power supply. Can you just bend the prongs so the plug fits?

    • +3

      That's probably not advised.

      • +3

Register warranty and contact WD via emaik or phone, they will send you a free power supply.

        • When doing this do I register as US or AU customer on WD Support Portal? The warranty register worked but then it shows the status as "Out of Region" and with an expiration date of about 2 years.

    • +1

You can in a pinch, but a better way is just to buy a couple of these - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/173684492788

Then you stick them on with a bit of glue

    • It's a stock standard 12v barrel plug adapter.

Anything with sufficient amperage (usually over 2A) like from an old router will do perfectly. And I'd trust a power supply more than a flimsy prong adapter - you don't want it to fall out due to the weight of the adapter, and cause data corruption!

    • Yes you can

  • +3

Hmm , to wait for Black Friday or not.

Don't really need the drives until next year so I think holding off makes the most sense.

    • what are you expecting to get on black friday? genuinely curious.

    • Don't really need the drives until next year so I think holding off makes the most sense.

If you don't need them until next year…. Wait…. Prices will only go down unless we lose a HDD factory or two.

  • Oh "shuck" it, went and bought 2!

    • -2

u sure u wanna by 2 wd ? just wait seagate deal

  • +2

Waiting for the 10TB to be $250 ish again…

  • Showing as $229 for me?

  • +2

damn, too slow :/ oh well, I really wanted 10Tb drives anyway

  • I've been waiting for a deal like this but missed out :( Hopefully they'll have a similar deal soon. My new, empty NAS enclosure is looing rather sad and I need to feed it ASAP!
