6 Days Stay in Adelaide - Things to Do/Itinerary

Got a 6 days Adelaide Getaway lined up in early January, but not so certain about what this SA capital has to offer.

Contray to the new SA ad which really doesn't show much, I am a young person. Don't planning to rent a car (not a huge fan of the young driver surcharge), not so much of a wine person either, but will still visit Barossa.

So, what would you do if you have 6 days in Adelaide?

  • I'd recommend you skip Barossa and go to McLaren Vale, but either way there are plenty of bus tours from Adelaide that are reasonable. Get to a Big Bash League game at Adelaide Oval. Any of the beaches are good, but more happening at Glenelg/Semaphore. Plenty of food/produce/culture at Central Markets and Chinatown. Art Gallery is pretty good if you're into that.

    What are you in to and where are you staying?

    • Sydney. Coming down because of the irresistable cheap flight.

      Accomondation not booked yet (looking for some Qantas hotels voucher), but will be in the CBD.

      • What I meant was "what kind of things do you like to do?"

        • Nature stuff.

            @21510702: Then staying in the CBD and not having a car is going to make that hard.

              @dapt: not necessarily true. there's buses and some trains to some great nearby parks.

              bus to lofty
              bus to near waterfall gully (bottom of some trails)
              bus to morialta
              train to belair

              some walking to and from stations but fairly reasonable distance if you plan it

              keep in mind you could get a fairly hot week in january.

              • @cynicalmike: I know this is OzBargain but I wouldn't want to waste my limited holiday time by waiting around all day for weekend Adelaide buses to rural areas.

                • @dapt: literally none of the places i've listed are considered rural

            @21510702: The Gorge Wildlife Park;
            Cleland Wildlife Park;
            Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary;
            Monarto Zoo;
            Adelaide Zoo & Botanical Gardens.

            Other than the Adelaide Zoo & Botanical Gardens which is in the city, will be advisable to drive to the rest.

            • @KSMLJ: if you are going to the zoo, go to taranga zoo and get a yearly pass, u can go to Adelaide and Monaco for free

              they are linked, like Melbourne and Perth and some others

              so buy one yearly pass can go to them all

              • @djones145:

                get a yearly pass, u can go to Adelaide and Monaco for free

                are we playing monopoly now?

          • @21510702: Second Valley.

  • It offers flights from Adelaide to other destinations

    • I actually would love to go to Eyre Peninsula but flights to Port Lincoln or driving there is beyond my budget (and most certainly more expensive than my flight from Sydney to Adelaide)

    Hahndorf's a nice village to visit and home to my favourite strawberry jam manufacturer Beerenberg where you can pick strawberries (sadly I couldn't take mine back to Sydney when I did it).

    Adelaide Zoo has pandas and is a nice way to spend an afternoon.

    The art gallery and museum are free (except for paid exhibitions). Along with the State Library, they're all on the same street (unlike Sydney; so much effort to get to the Art Gallery of NSW)

    I've been to both Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale; if you like Maggie Beer, you can check out her farm at the Barossa as well as check out Whispering Wall. McLaren Vale has d'Arenberg which is very artsy but you said you weren't too keen on wine so maybe skip that. There's also Mount Lofty too but since you said you weren't going to drive, you might have difficulty accessing all three places.

    Shopping compared to Sydney is meh; some brands still haven't set up camp in Adelaide like UNIQLO. Still can't believe ALL shops shut at 5 on Sundays, including supermarkets.

      Hahndorf is looking a little sad. A few of my favourite cafes have been sold to migrants (bare with me) who aren't aware of the appeal Hahndorf needs to maintain nor what is appropriate decor.

      There was an elephant amongst many foreign (to the German ambience) items in Cafe Asssiette.

      … and the parking…

      beerenberg is great, make sure u have a look on woolies cause they are usually cheaper than in store….

      • Yeah but they also have specials on wonky label products or products where they might have put too much product in something (there was one when I went where they accidentally added wine or something), so worth checking out the Farm Shop (I bought 48 individual packs of strawberry jam like you get on the aeroplane heh)

    If you like nature, take a tour over to Kangaroo Island. Great scenery, heaps of animals (koalas, kangaroos and seals), can even go sand boarding. Islands bigger than you think and best to do it over two days.

    • KI is incredible, totally worth doing (ideally for more than a day)

  • Play golf at Royal Adelaide 3 times and Kooyonga twice.
