How can I find people I can photograph?

Hi all, I am from Melbourne and want to get into the photography scene and also looking forward to build my portfolio. I am thinking to photograph couples, women, kids, families but not the events. How can find people who can be interested in getting Photographed for free?

Gumtree/facebook groups or ask your friends

Just go out in public and ask people?

Do not take pictures of kids in public, nor ask parents if you can take pictures of their kids.

That's just disgustingly ignorant and nonsensical fear-mongering. Ridiculous 'advice'.

Maybe have a look for mothers’ groups and advertise free maternity shoots?

Hahaha, now you've got me wondering if it's 'Uncle Snake' or 'Uncle's nake' (Uncle's nakey)

    • There's an audience for everything.

Get an internship with Roxy Jacenko.

Seriously, just pay wannabe models from proper agencies.

Just do long lens photography so you don't need to ask

May still end up costing you …

Join your local camera club. Not only will you get to meet like minded individuals, but you will then have a contact list for models to use, great information on locals and an abundance of knowledge and feedback if you take advantage of in house competitions.

    • Best answer.

    • Edit: that was meant to be “great information on local shooting spots”

I just walk up to people and ask them, depending on what I'm capturing

  • As a retired pro snapper, the aspect of photographing people and privacy is more constraining these days. Yes you are essentially ok to photograph out "in the street" however this could risk confrontation as to your true intent.

I think joining a camera club is a good option, and perhaps some art groups, they might like the odd file/print of themselves to later use as reference for their own sketching/painting. Just be sensitive and discreet, IF people understand your intent they may be ok with being a subject.

  • Go out and ask the public. My partner and I have been asked a fair few times in the last couple of months for photography pairs while we're just sitting at a cafe or bar. We always ask for a card and say yes. Never expected money or anything in return. Just helping an artist. I think this would be your best bet.

  • Facebook "TFP" Groups. Melbourne will have heaps.

  • Join instagram start posting photos. theres a lot of wannabe models on there.

  • Be careful on private property. That includes shopping malls, sporting venues etc.
