Keep in mind only Australia post delivers to PO boxes. Lots of stores use courier.. Often without telling you (eg: ebay).. So you'll need to use your real address often.

    7 months is weird.

    • +2

7 months because you will pay pro-rata from the date you hire the PO BOX until the end of March(after that you will need to pay the whole year if you wish to continue).

DHL happily route deliveries to parcel lockers, just takes an extra day for AusPost to process it on receipt. Would assume they're ok with PO boxes too. Might be others too.

      • +1

yep. i've had DHL parcels [indirectly] arrive in my PO box.
startrack, too, but only because they are owned by AusPost

      • +1

Same as UPS but delivery gets delayed by a few days

    • +6

As a PO Box owner for over a decade, personally I have found it quite rare that I cannot get something posted to the PO Box, and I buy from Ebay regularly. Never had a problem with all your usual online stores, and you'd be surprised how many just send to your PO Box when it asks you to enter a street address :)

Not only has it been invaluable for when moving house, but you don't get issues with delivery drivers leaving parcels unattended (even when instructed not to), throwing them over the gate, pretending no one is home and taking it to the post office anyway, or worse, returning it to dock, and then having to organise "re-delivery" when they didn't even ring the bell - just to name a few issues I've had in the past with the street address.

      • +2

So YOU’RE the reason I have to leave the business and get the post office office before they shut. Haha.

Everything else is courier pickup. I grumble to myself every time a PO Box / Parcel Locker order arrives.

A sale is better than no sale though.

      • +1

Fastway is so common and the main culprit.

      • had the oposite experience.
its pretty commn for a lit of cmpanies NOT to ship to po bxes both n ebay and general net.
even big w recently shipped a game by courier to my po bx but in the same order by a second courier snt back a large item ( microwave).
s smaller items may have less problems lys ifthe courier delivers outside 9-5 pm times then theres often no delvery. happened with amazon premoum delvery.

        • +3

Is your keyboard randomly breaking different keys as you're typing..?

    • +1

ebay GSP from US goes by fedex who turn it over to Aus Post when it arrives in the country.
GSP from the UK hands it to Fastway who will leave it in their depot until you provide a residential address for redelivery, then drop it outside your front door so some scumbag can steal it.

    • +2

Fastway does not deliver to post boxes or physical addresses - they only deliver to Newsagencies several suburbs away which then lose your stuff, unless they have managed to lose your stuff beforehand.

      DEATH TO FASTWAY.

      • +2

Fastway have problems delivering to anywhere, full stop :P

  • Its truely a bargain if you are planning to hire a PO BOX. Addition to that is 6 months free of mail redirection which costs $85.45 for private or around $300 for business if i remember correctly

    • +2

Yeah definitely a bargain for anyone already planning to get a PO Box or for anyone who has recently moved and are in need of a redirection for 6 months. You got that right. Around $300 plus for a business redirection so I would usually suggest that they open up a PO Box instead. Choice is theirs.

You might like to mention that Australia post has been steadily rising the rental price almost each year by ten bucks or so. I guess you'll get people in and keep raising prices…

    • This

    • i've had my PO box now for nearly 20 years. our local LPO has changed ownership 5 times. the latest owners and his family have been running it for nearly a year. they misplace parcels (i had a small parcel turn up 2 months later), put other people's mail in the wrong box and will close early when it suits them. they've got me squeezed because i'd have to pay to cancel this box, and pay an establishment fee for a box at another post office.

      • +2

I'd try calling the contact centre and making a complaint. You might find that they'll waive the cancellation fee if the LPO isn't performing, or maybe a different location would work for you? Worth a try anyway.

Regardless of whether you can cancel or not, they might not be aware of how bad the LPO is…

      • +1

Well this deal should now allow you to change without losing money

      • +1

That's the worse part of a PO box. Paying to open/close the account. Hell, I can't even add another person on the account without paying for it.

    • +4

They are definitely getting more expensive, but it's not quite as bad as you claim (at least more recently).

The reduced (pay-on-time) rates have been:

      2011: $86.00
      2012: $93.00
      2013: $99.00
      2014: $107.00
      2015: $115.00
      2016: $121.00
      2017: $124.00
      2018: $127.00
      2019: $130.00

Redirection cost me $144.15 this year - now that did hurt.

    • -1

they increase prices every year mate and well people can not renew it for the next year after the price increases.

  • +4

don't forget there's also an establishment fee of $20 and a cancellation fee of $30.

    • +1

Establishment fee is included in price. Cancellation fee however is not

  • -2

Is this offer 50% off, or are you just paying the normal price (plus setup and cancellation fee) for half a year lease. Not arguable as a bargain if that's the case.

Better solved by mail redirection to a friends house. I think redirection is free for pensioners and perhaps low income people.

A PO box seems too sketchy and expensive for average people to benefit from. I'd barely ever need one so $100 to $200 p/y with all the limitations and rules they have on them is overpriced imo.

A setup and cancellation fee, and size, time and source restrictions. I'd have to have no other choice.

    • +1

Agreed. The benefits of leasing one, just aren't clear to me at all.

Plus, you need to actually visit your post office in order to collect your mail. That's a big negative from me.

    • +6

we got one primarily for privacy, especially when applying for jobs. seems to be a few sketchy places out there that just want your details, and one thing they really don't need to know is where i live.

also slightly more secure having important documents sent there instead of your home address where, even if you lock your letterbox like i do, thieves can still steal your mail if the postie hasn't shoved your mail all the way in.

      • Fair enough, I can see how people who are more concerned about privacy would value this offer. Hadn't thought about the important docs either…

        • +1

some organisations still insist on sending things like bank cards (pre-activated, even) and gift cards over a certain value to your residential address, despite all the mail and identity theft that makes the news so frequently.

    • +2

As far as I know, there never has been a 50% off P.O. Box leases but there are definitely P.O. Box lease price increases every year.

As for mail redirection, it is not free for pensioners or low income individuals. They’ll still have to pay for it at a lower rate.

To be fair a P.O. Box is not for everyone. Hence the need for each individual to make an informed choice about whether they really need a P.O Box

      • As far as I know, there never has been a 50% off P.O. Box leases…

Then isn't your title wrong? i.e. "50% OFF Leasing a New PO Box"
Anyway not a big deal. Cheers for posting it.

  • +2

One thing people need to know with PO Box is that in the event you are receiving a Parcel (assuming deliverable to PO BOX), the Australia Post shop which hosts the PO Box will leave a card for you to pick up at the counter OR if the parcel is small enough to fit into a new red PO Box (about A4 depth and 15cm height), then it will leave you a key inside your PO Box for you to unlock the red PO Box where you can grab your parcel.

Redirection from your usual address into PO Box will take an extra day of delivery time.

  • Have had one for years but don't get emails when something in the box…occasional SMS but rare even then…how do you activate email alerts?

    • +2

Go into PO and get them to activate Mail2day notifications to your email

    • You can activate mail2day in store or online if you have an Auspost account.

      • It seems you can't activate a business leased PO Box online…hopefully they will do it at the PO!

        • oh that's strange. yeah probably best to head into your local PO.

  • Great deal thank you. Not moving house till later this year, reckon I could ask them to hold off on the redirection until then?

    • You certainly can. You will have to put in the date as to when you would like your redirection to start in the mail redirection form.

  • +3

Good deal but the $30 cancellation seems like extreme BS on Australia Post's part

  • Which Post Offices are participating though? Can't find a list

    • +1

Yeah strangely enough I can’t find a list too. However, I believe most post offices participate. Should be able to check it out online. Just have to put in which post office you would prefer and it will give you a quote.

  • Are they big enough for a surfboard?

    • +3

The P.O. Box most certainly isn’t but the post office is. Bulky parcels that do not fit in a P.O. Box would just be kept in the post office

      • So no point in getting a big box? Just get the small one?

        • Exactly right mate. A small one is more than sufficient

          • @Hunnypooh: Surely this defeats the point that you can "collect your parcel whenever it suits you" - if you need to queue up at the counter to get it?!

            • @clandestino: well it's whenever it suits you and not pick up your parcel in an instant whenever it suits you.

        • There is no recorded policy saying they have to keep oversize parcels in the office - they can, and sometimes do, reject parcels that are unable to fit. I was told this by an Auspost (corporate) store mail clerk.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Good old Australia post making it hard for you to get your parcels again

But the thing that frustrates me most is when they take a parcel to the post office if you're not at home - they should NOT be allowed to take it to a post office that isn't open Saturday morning. If you're not at home to receive a parcel the first time, it's probably because you work 9-5, so when they take it to a post office that only operates weekdays then you're not able to get it without taking time off work. What a F*** up!

            • +2

@justtoreply: That's a good point mate. Sorry to hear of your experiences.

You could try a parcel collect location that's open on Saturdays. That way your parcel would definitely be dropped off at the post office of your nomination. Just a way to take control of your delivery.

              • +1

@Hunnypooh: I use the Parcel Collect service, which is free.

Fantastic, I don't have to worry about the courier leaving parcels at my front door which is visible from our minor arterial road.

Also, with Parcel Collect, your full address includes the street address of the Post Office, so I haven't had any problems getting deliveries which require 'real addresses'.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: maybe try your friendly local LPO if you have one around you mate. I've never rejected parcels that are unable to fit. Guitars, baby seats, bees, dung beetles, I've kept them on the side for PO Box holders in the LPO.

            • +2

@Hunnypooh: Our LPO has never rejected any of our parcels which has ranged from bulk buys of nappies and wipes from Amazon, to a 9 person tent, flatpacked items, bulk order of power tools, bulk orders of washing powder and cereal which come in massive boxes… the list goes on, and they even stack 'em up on one of their trolleys and keep it waiting for me.
I live less than 5 mins away from the LPO so I go once or twice a week.

  • Wow, $200 to be able to receive mail for a month. I'd expect it to be cheaper.

  • its about 5-10 times the au price in the uk so dont complain lol

  • I literally signed up at full price a week ago!

  • Can anyone who lives at the same address use a PO box or only the person who applied? i.e. can everyone in my family use it?

    • Yep they sure can, you get two keys with the box but can order more.

  • +1

Have had a PO Box for years (20 odd). Have moved POs in that time and while yes, you will get some slackers, it better than dealing with mail theft and poor courier service.

Recommend shopping around. Look for ones that are located in with chemists, IGAs etc - they will often be open longer hours and will be more than happy for you to collect parcels 'after hours'

    • +1

Look for ones that are located in with chemists, IGAs etc…

I don't think so - you can get some odd things going on with mail redirections leading to lost mail (with mail vanishing within the associated Mail Delivery Centre), and the shops are more likely to permanently close than your typical established Post Office.

This knowledge was secured with serious coincident pain.

That's rough luck for you. we're in a late night Chemist now in Adelaide and frankly I wonder why we didn't do it sooner. Open until 9pm 7 days.
Been at 2 POs and 1 LPO prior. Shop around.
