Help with a Gaming Laptop

My kids need something to run a bunch of games (Civ, Sim City, Minecraft, Subnautica, Fortnite).
Their current laptop is very laggy and they can't do what the want to do on it.

I started looking at gaming laptops- is that what we need?
I'd appreciate any suggestions <$1500.

Cheers :)

Does it need to be portable?

  • whats the current laptop? A ssd might fix it.

  • They have a Dell Latitude E6540. A friend who works in IT got them wiped and we were able to purchase for $50. I got him to take a look at it to see what he could do, but he said we needed more space and couldn't add any more? Or something like that.

Ideally portable yes, as my eldest is homeschooled and it goes with him out and about to different meets.

  • I am currently studying a postgrad so have student discounts across different platforms like Unidays if that helps.

  • Probably the issue is the latitude probably doesn't have any dedicated graphics.

    As a few lazy suggestions:

consider the Asus Tuf Gaming AMD FX505DT-AL043T or MSI GL63 8RCS-051AU.

Likely other options out there too

    • I can’t recommend Asus Tuf FX505DT as there are some serious design issues with it.

Can't go wrong with Dell G3 and G5.

It's usually pretty cheap on the official Dell eBay AU store

    • I can’t recommend G3 with 1050ti. That graphics card is superseded by gtx 1650.

  • Alright, price wise I can't stretch for this.
What is the cheapest I can get away with? Is there anything under $1000?

    • Ryzen 5-3550H processor, 8GB DDR4 memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 3GB

but if you can spend slightly more..

      • Thanks! For 2 kids playing Fornite/Subnautica/Minecraft/Civ- are they likely to notice a difference between the two laptops you've suggested?

        • I would say so. Minecraft and Civ probably not, since these games are very CPU dependant (and both laptops have roughly the same amount of CPU power),

but in fast paced games like Fortnite they might, due to the generational difference in the Graphics card. The GTX 1050 is a fair bit slower than the newer GTX 1650

  • With $1500 budget you’re looking at a mid tier gaming laptop with gtx 1660ti graphics. For $1100 it’s entry level gtx1650 range. Under $1k it’s old stock like 1050ti, which I don’t recommend anymore.

  • So…I ended up getting the Asus Tuf FX505DT from Futu Online eBay store.
Everything has been going swimmingly, until my 8 year old yesterday turned it off while it was in the middle of a BIOS update, and now the laptop powers up, but the screen is blank.

I'm so cranky that he couldn't wait, and now it's bloody school holidays and our main device doesn't work.

I've contacted Futu because I purchased in October, but I don't know if they cover idiot children under warranty.

Does anyone know (say it's not covered under warranty) the rough amount it would cost me to get this fixed?
    I'm scared.
