Usenet is a bulletin board service that predates the web.
Imagine a hierarchical reddit - newsgroups are in categories like comp.lang.c, or similar.
It's pretty much died out except for the newsgroups hosting binary files (in a fancy text file format that are split across multiple postings (size limitations) which then have to be stitched back together).
The files host just about anything you can imagine - most newsgroups services are accessed via a VPN (for obvious reasons).
Very good, although I suspect most access via https, rather then VPN.

Not true. Most VPNs have SSL encryption. VPN is not needed.
It's more secure than unencrypted downloads via VPN. They at least theoretically have a way to trace you. They know what IP downloaded what files.
With SSL, no one knows what you downloaded. Not your ISP, not RIAA, no one.
