I Want to Buy Bikes for My Commute from Home to Station

Hello

I want to buy bikes for my commute from home to station.

Any suggestions? Looking to spend no more than $300 and please let me know where can I get.

Looked into Kmart and Target but did not find one.

Thank you

    Local bicycle shop?
    eBay?
    Gumtree?
    Sports store?
    Google?

Yamaha MT07 would be a good commuter

$170 mens commuter bike at Anaconda:

I think this is the price at your local store?

I have a feeling the OP is a woman, so might need a women's commuter bike instead

Bikes come in different shapes and sizes, so go into somewhere like 99Bikes, try a few and see what you like. Write those models down, go home and do research online and read some reviews. Then google for the best price.

How far is the distance to the station?

Is there somewhere safe to store the bike at the station?

What kind of terrain? Footpath, road, rail trail?

For <$300 you'll either end up with a bike that is very heavy (and therefore hard to ride), which might not be such an issue if the distance is short and terrain flat, or you'll need to look second hand for something a bit better.

Plus one. Need to know more than ‘to the station’

Disagree with a <$300 bike being ‘very heavy’. Sure it will be heavier than a premium bike, but being heavy doesn’t make a bike much harder to ride. 1 or 2 kg of bike will make less difference than the gearing or a few kg on the waist line. What makes cheap bikes hard to ride is typically poor bearings, not enough grease and poor brakes.

Agree second hand is a better idea. Won’t look as flashy, therefore less likely to be stolen. Spend $100-150 on the bike and then get it serviced (or do it yourself).

    One bike should suffice

If you're leaving your bike all day in an accessible location, ensure that it doesn't look expensive or easy to steal. You want thieves to steal someone else's bike first.

$300 on bike and $600 on lock.

    • Doesnt work, they just bend your spokes because they can.

Aldi 29er bike would be perfect, $349 but it's a quality bike comparable to $600+ branded one

  • Which Target/Kmart, most I look at have them, also they are listed on their website.

If you cant find one there that suits how about letting us know what criteria you are requiring for a bike that suits you.

    eg https://www.kmart.com.au/category/sports/shop-by-category/bi…

  • Please do not buy a bike from Kmart. They are made too cheaply and will not last.

Look for a second hand bike that was valued around $600 when new. You can find them easily under $200 and then pay a bit more out of your $300 to get new tyres, cables etc or have it serviced.

    A $300 foldable bicycle.

  • Not sure what area you live, but i would suggest not buying such an expensive bike, as they get stolen more often at the train stations (if left at the station) even when they are chained up, crims are super desperate these days.

    • $300 is a long way from being an expensive bike. It is below the minimum standard ‘bike shop’ bike that is actually decent quality.

  • A $300 s/h bike will be far superior to a shiny new $300 ‘supermarket’ bike, which are put together with very cheap parts and are absolute trash.
Because you know nothing about bikes and don’t seem to have a knowledgeable friend to assist you, running around looking at eBay or Gumtree bikes can be daunting and time-wasting.
You can pick up a pretty good ‘train station’ bike for $300 from Cash Converters. And Aldi have some motorbike D locks at the moment for $30, which would be good for securing a bike at the station. Make sure you lock it up near a CCTV camera.

  • Keep your eye open when people have hard rubbish collections. I use one I found as my 'train station bike'. That way if it is ever stolen/broken then I don't really care as it was free!

Hi, Decathlon is having a sales on their bike range, 50%, end by 29 Sep, i believe. Just got one from them :)

  • Reid bikes. Get a single speed - low maintenance, lower desirability for theft

  • How far are you from the station?
