Child Seat Requirements

I hope someone can assist me as I can't find confirmed information

If you have Ford territory with 3rd row seat(factory 7 seater car), does 4 and 7 years old still need a booster seat to sit on this 3rd row? I thought 3rd row seats are already very small and low so child wouldn't need booster seat. Please advise.

You need a car seat for child under 8. No matter if it's in second row or third row as the car seat avoid your child to sustain any injury with the seat belt if there is a collision.

Thanks but they are already wearing belts in 3rd row.

I have 0 to 8 years baby seats which have been converted into booster. However they are big and it's nightmare to put seat belt each time.

It is a worse nightmare if your child is badly injured in an accident - safety first!

Thanks for the clarification. Just wanted to double check so will continue to use them.

@Ash-Say: Unless you want to decapitate the little 'un/s put them on a booster/childseat.

      • It doesn't matter. Have you ever see what a seat belt injury is ? Even on an adult ? The car seat provide kids a safety and less impact. It is a nightmare not matter which row kids are seated to put on the belt and take it off but if one day you are in a car accident, you will be so thankfull that your kids was in a proper car seat. And at 4 and 7 they can do it themselves so no need for dad and mum to put the seat belt. My 4 yeard old is fine with putting her seat belt by herself before we start the car and will remove it herself when the car stop.

    • National child restraint laws

      • Children up to the age of six months must be secured in an approved rearward facing restraint
      • Children aged from six months old but under four years old must be secured in either a rear or forward facing approved child restraint with an inbuilt harness
      • Children under four years old cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows
      • Children aged from four years old but under seven years old must be secured in a forward facing approved child restraint with an inbuilt harness or an approved booster seat
      • Children aged from four years old but under seven years old cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows, unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than seven years in an approved child restraint or booster seat
      • Children aged from seven years old but under 16 years old who are too small to be restrained by a seatbelt properly adjusted and fastened are strongly recommended to use an approved booster seat
      • Children in booster seats must be restrained by a suitable lap and sash type approved seatbelt that is properly adjusted and fastened, or by a suitable approved child safety harness that is properly adjusted and fastened.

So your statement is not 100% correct

      • While your statement is correct…

My eldest was already 145cm by the time he turned 6 and it wasn't safe for him to be in a booster seat. We followed the RCH recommendations rather than the letter of the law.

does 4 and 7 years old still need a booster seat to sit on this 3rd row?

Yes. The law makes no exceptions for "3rd row seats which are very small and low".

    • Yes, looking at the hansard the exception did not make it through the lower house, but was strongly debated!

  • the requirement for over 7 years old is dependant on height

if they are above 145cm they can use an adult seat belt

also a bit of gut feel, if too small, get a booster (some of the boosters are really small!)

An adult seat belt crosses your body over your chest. Without a booster seat, an adult seat belt will usually sit over a child's neck and will not properly restrain them in an accident.

The whole idea of a booster seat is that it brings the child up higher so that an adult seat belt won't harm them in an accident. Age really has little to do with it - whether you need a booster seat or not depends on the height of the child.

    • this goes for all child seats

If your child is too small for the child restraint specified for their age, they should be kept in their current child restraint until it is safe for them to move to the next level.

If your child is too large for the child restraint specified for their age, they may move to the next level of child restraint.

My 5 & 7yo are still using car seats utilising anchor points, something the 3rd row of your Territory doesn't have.

Please tell me you're not risking the life of your kids over laziness. Your 4yo needs a proper seat, not a booster.

    • Just to be a nitpicky (profanity), Territory are one of the few cars with tethers in the third row.

      • Ah shit cheers for clearing that up

  • have a look at the under 2kg booster seat from big w. because it is less than 2kg, there is no need for anchor point tethering.

They are certified to the same safety standards as the heavier seats.

Get one, see if your kids are within the height markers on the seats and go from there.
