Okay so this is a weird one, and I'll explain why.

This game launches next week across all platforms, but, in Australia at least, there is a heavy Switch tax. On both PS4 and XB1 the game is listed at ~$49 at EB Games and JB Hi Fi, whereas the Switch version is listed at ~$69 at the same stores.

Currently Amazon are price matching the European copy available from OzGameShop and have the other platforms listed at ~$43 and ~$49 respectively.

Now on to the game:
This is not a direct sequel to Yooka Laylee, the 3D platformer, but rather a spin off in the style of the Donkey Kong Country series.

When developing the game, Playtonic were targeting a smooth 60fps experience on Switch and then enhancing the visual fidelity and effects for the more powerful systems. This is a game built from the ground up for Nintendo's system in other words.

Here's some gameplay from an early copy of the Switch version so you can see the smooth performance for yourself:

Anyway, by preordering you're saving roughly $21 from RRP on this version of the game or at least until Big W or Target come in with a lower offer closer to release.

You are also protected by Amazon's pre-order Price guarantee.

This, kinda surprised reading the physical prices. Purchased last week.

I, and I'm sure a lot of other people, would prefer a physical version where available.

But given the eshop price, I was surprised by the apparent steep RRP here specifically for the Switch version.

      • Just thought it would be good to share the cheapest available price as some people might not be aware.
Especially as it's thirty odd dollars cheaper!

  • Has there been any indication if LRG is going to do a CE like they did for the predecessor?

100% gonna wait until performance is measured on retail version.
Perfect game for Switch, but I cant go through another Links Awakening

    • I've attached a video in the description. For the 10 minutes they have footage of, it's a locked 60fps

  • What is the love for this game? The original seems a cult classic somehow, although I don't recall it being big when released

    • Maybe I’m in the wrong circles I don’t think too many consider the original a classic and I don’t see a lot of hype about this release either.

      • When the original game released for Switch in its patched state it "found its audience". Reviews were good and it brought people back to the 90s when 3D collectathon platformers were everywhere

The original game received criticism on some aspects of its level design for being "too big" or tedious to find all the required collectibles to advance the story.

This game was only announced earlier this year in the lead up to E3 if I recall correctly and from all the previews I've seen/read, it seems to be a quality title that draws heavily from the Donkey Kong Country series. Digital Foundry had high praise for the game from a technical standpoint as well during their preview.

This is still technically an Indie game and being published by team 17 (Overcooked, Worms, etc) so won't necessarily get the big-budget marketing that titles like Tropical Freeze or Mario gets.

It may slip under the radar too, like I'm sure a lot of people may be unaware that Ori and The Blind Forest released on Switch this past week despite being a former Microsoft exclusive developed/published by Microsoft Studios.

        • Not saying it was universally panned by any stretch, I just don’t think many people would call Yooka Laylee a “classic”. In particular it’s patched form release was very close to Mario Odyssey and most people from what I’ve seen hold the Mario title in much higher esteem. The delays to getting the game out for Switch likely were a bit of a disservice in that regard as it put the title head to head with the gold standard if the 3D platforming genre.

Mario aside, I think even the Crash remake had more of a following and was better received.

  • The original was such a let down.

    • Did you play it? I thought it was fine. Also has no bearing on this game

  • Anyone get theirs? I got an email from Amazon that the supplier is having issues.

I cancelled and reordered mine to get the $5 saving on preorders so mine is "expected to arrive" on Thursday, but hasn't been shipped yet.

I heard there may be supply issue in the UK/Europe, but my local Big W had copies on the shelf a day before release.

Didn't know whether this was worth re-flagging for people as it is back in stock and still eligible for the $5 off for Prime Members bringing the total to $42.99. Mines arriving today.
