Who should pay? The NSW Police or the South African Consulate or me?

Hi guys, so I'm in a bit of a predicament. So 6 months ago, we submitted my partner's passport renewal, and we got her fingerprints done at the police station. We paid about $100 for fingerprints to be done. They sent these physical fingerprints to Canberra, and then these were sent to South Africa for processing. We made an enquiry the other day, and apparently the fingerprints were unclear, and the Consulate sent us the fingerprint forms again saying we need to do them again. Who should pay for the fingerprints to be done this time around? Should I just suck it up and pay the $100? Or should I ask for a reimbursement from the consulate? I'm pretty sure the police won't do it for free here. For reference, passport applications take 6-12 months here for South Africans living in Australia.

TLDR: We paid $100 for fingerprints for a passport application, and the Consulate wants us to do them again because they were unclear. Who should foot the bill for the next set for fingerprints? Me? The police? The South African Consulate?

put ink on your fingers and stick it on a paper

I would say Police if it is actually unclear/fit for fingerprints. However good luck getting anyone to pay for them again other than you.

it's the officer's fault (haha), show them paperwork from last time and ask nicely if they can redo it based on the last application (not new process)

if you pay 100 again, then 2nd round still unclear, then pay another 100, until your passport expires.

      I agree.

Most police (I know) would do it again for free if they have paperwork from consulate saying the first lot didn't work. As always, politeness, respect and patience will be the key.

Not sure why the majority response is "Suck it up loser" when the police are public servants and supposed to be protecting citizens but presumably these are the same fools insisting electricity is cheap when so high it's crashing the economy so up is down, black is white and whatever other strange beliefs they have.

If you ask the South African Consulate to pay, they will just declare diplomatic immunity.

I went through this process 9 months ago and although it was a pain to find a police station to actually get my fingerprints taken, as digital fingerprints are used here for everything, to find a station with an ink pad was a struggle. I didn’t have to pay anything at the police station to get them done. I just called ahead to make sure there was an officer on duty who was able to assist. (This was on the South Coast, NSW.)

Side note - it took 7 months from my submission to get my new passport. Just in case you think those passport wait times are exaggerated. (And that was after multiple follow up phone calls and requests to expedite).

Who should pay gonna be a lot different to who will pay.

The amount of this habit has gone out of control lately..

  • Or should I ask for a reimbursement from the consulate?

My dear Nugget0210, you could not even give them a pawking ticket.

Can there be a joining time limit before new members can post on the forums please.

Yes, perhaps a minimum membership of a week and 5 posts. As these babies rarely come back to their own forum to join in.

I'm presuming you're a SA passport holder residing in Australia. In that case, wht don't you renounce the old country and join the new? I haven't looked too deeply into the pros and cons but I can't think of any benefits that would make SA citizenship beneficial over this popsicle stand?

You could put in a request with the Police ombudsman, as this problem resulted from the police's shoddy workmanship, nothing that was within your control, and should be remedied free of charge by them.
