[PC] Free - Surviving Mars (rated 76% positive on Steam, RRP: $42.95 AUD) - Epic Store

3460

The next freebie from the Epic Store is here.

This week it is: Surviving Mars

Note: Make sure to scroll down the page: there are TWO DLCs that are also free this week. Make sure to add them manually so they are in your account! (thanks to DogGunn for pointing this out!)
There were THREE free DLCs but no there are only two - the Marsvision Song Contest one was free too when I grabbed it but shortly after Epic fixed it - it might have been a mistake but the people who grabbed it when it was free get to keep it.

From the website:

Surviving Mars

Colonize Mars and discover her secrets, with minimal casualties.

Welcome Home! The time has come to stake your claim on the Red Planet and build the first functioning human colonies on Mars! All you need are supplies, oxygen, decades of training, experience with sandstorms, and a can-do attitude to discover the purpose of those weird black cubes that appeared out of nowhere. With a bit of sprucing up, this place is going to be awesome!
Surviving Mars is a sci-fi city builder all about colonizing Mars and surviving the process. Choose a space agency for resources and financial support before determining a location for your colony. Build domes and infrastructure, research new possibilities and utilize drones to unlock more elaborate ways to shape and expand your settlement. Cultivate your own food, mine minerals or just relax by the bar after a hard day’s work. Most important of all, though, is keeping your colonists alive. Not an easy task on a strange new planet.
There will be challenges to overcome. Execute your strategy and improve your colony’s chances of survival while unlocking the mysteries of this alien world. Are you ready? Mars is waiting for you.

Main Features:

  • Building a sustainable colony in space
Building on a planet not fit for human life challenges you to build a smart, functional colony. Bad planning isn’t about traffic jams, it’s about survival of your colonists. You really don’t want rolling blackouts in a city constructed in a place without oxygen.
  • Individually simulated colonists
Each colonist is a unique individual with problems and strengths that influence the needs and behavior of the other colonists. Things can get really interesting if your chief scientists develops alcoholism after one too many long nights in the lab.
  • Futuristic Space Dome construction
Retro-futuristic super structures housing colonists, factories and commercial buildings with their own “neighborhood personality.” Create colonies that value science over everything else, while tired workers drink their pay away at a local bar, or attempt a utopia among the stars.
  • Exploration of Mars’ secrets
Inspired by the classic sci-fi of Asimov and Clarke, Surviving Mars holds many secrets. During each playthrough players may encounter one of Mars’ individually crafted mysteries. Uncovering these secrets might bring your colony great fortune, or terrible ruin. What is that sphere that manifested itself outside colony HUB B, and is it friendly?
  • Randomized research tree
Combine static and random research through experimentation, which allows for a different experience for each journey through the game. Attain new scientific breakthroughs by exploring the uncharted terrain of Mars's surface.

Enjoy!

  • this game is a lot of fun, I spent real world money buying this. Apparently the expansions are good too

    • +2

I'd be surprised if you could buy this game or any game with non-real world money. ;-)
Just joking - I know what you mean.

      • +1

Steam trading card sales fund buying games with funny money

    • I spent real world money buying this

good it would have been a waste of interdimensional money.

  • So many damn idiots…they haunt my dreams still!

    • +1

What?!?! You dreaming about me again? Stop it! :D

I religiously keep adding all the free stuff here, but haven’t actually read any free book in Amazon, or learned any free course in Udemy, or played any free games in Epics from the deals posted here. Too busy checking out other deals.

A true OzBargainer! One of us, one of us, one of us!

  • Great game! If you’re into this type of game don’t just add it to your library, play it too.

  • Omg i just paid for a monthly bundle only for this game. Nooooo!

    • +6

Lesson here is: never buy a game as it will be free on EGS one day.

      • +7

never buy a game as it will be free on EGS one day

can't wait for HL3 on Epic

        • -3

          HL3 is never happening :p

Or was that a second joke hidden in your first joke?

      • Second time already this has happened

        • +1

Let us know other games are you buying?

          • @Sike O: When i buy game they go free

            • @Budju: Yes, so we know not to buy and wait for it to go free

  • +2

This is arguably their best free game yet, well worth getting. I have over 122 hours in this game and have endured many a colony crash. Hopefully the developers still get something.

    • +1

I really enjoyed it as well, particularly with one of the updates where they addressed many of the criticisms of the original game.

It's not for everyone though - not your usual FPS or anything… but I personally enjoy planning out the builds and slowly growing bigger and bigger.

      • Haha of course your typical fps gamer wouldn't like a sim!

On the original comment, subnautica was also a top tier free game on egs if anyone grabbed that. Worth playing (thalassophobia notwithstanding)

        • Still glad I didn't spend money on Subnautica. So many bugs, both cosmetic and game-breaking.

    • +3

Still Subnautica, that game is such a gem

      • +1

Everyone has different taste, but I do have to agree with you that Subnautica is their best freebie so far.
This is definitely up there as one of the better freebies too though.

    • Should you start with the tutorials or the story? The tutorials seemed to cover a lot of detail but I didn't find them very engaging.

  • +1

How is this sustainable for Epic? But who cares!

    • +7

They make a killing from Fortnite… They released 100 million to support developers… Money is not their problem, Steam is their biggest issue. They are buying good faith with developers in an effort to corner the market not from a customer standpoint but a developer standpoint. If/when their strategy pans out it will be seen as a masterstroke from a business standpoint, and likely (but not definitely) a good one for the gaming industry as well (for developers that is).

      • they need to get good in order to compete against steam (plus all other launchers)

still young kids like epic, old people like me prefer steam and so on, and you know why.

        • I'm probably an "old people" in the game community. But I prefer Epic for its fresh and slick designs. Things look simple and straightforward.
For Steam.. hmm I have a long list of games I should download/play but I have been mainly playing Overwatch these days ..

        • and you know why.

No? More of a HL guy than Unreal?

        • +1

          and you know why.

          That makes one of us.

          • -1

@idonotknowwhy: Since he mentioned "old people" I guess the reason is because he is stuck in his ways and reacts negatively to different experiences than what he's used to?

  • Wait, seriously? Surviving mars isn't even that old

    • They have a bunch of expansions and a season pass coming out soon. So they are counting on lots of free players being tempted by the big update and getting the season pass.

  • +3

Heads up this is also on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC if you don't want to deal with epic store

  • -1

Want this game so bad but also don't want to install epic game store on my pc.

    • +2

Same here, wish epic would support my operating system the way steam does.

  • +1

There seems to be a mass delusion about Mars.

Many people including Elon Musk appear to think it can be a second Earth but the human body falls apart in low gravity so it's hard to see how a permanent colony is possible.

And then the next nearest "suitable" planet is three human lifetimes away meaning a large spaceship would have to set off, the crew would have to procreate, that generation would only know life on the spaceship and then their children would get to see the planet. Which might not be suitable :p.

    • +8

Random but have you watched The Expanse ?

      • +3

Earthers have a home. It’s time Belters had one, too.

    • What about Venus?

      • I prefer uranus

      • Venus' surface temperature is hot enough to melt lead so its a solid no

      • It makes people of a certain age break into song.

    • +4

We only have experience with zero G (orbit, not actually no gravity).
The 38% mars gravity might be fine.

Plus all life on the planet eventually dies unless humanity works out how to branch out. So all experience and mistakes along the way are valuable.

  • how does one set a reminder?

    • Click on the bell/reminder field right under where reports can be made. Set your date and time and done!

      • thanks good sir.

    • Check Epic every weekend and collect the weekly freebies regardless of what they are.

    • Have a friend on discord that keeps telling you to claim freebie

  • When is this available for free? I'm either blind or dumb, or both.
I just see "this week" in the blerb from Epic, but this was posted yesterday, so is it from the weekend onwards or something?

    • +2

Think it was on the 11th October it's free to redeem.

    • +1

It changes on our Friday afternoon every week.

  • Looks like there’s a Mac version too.

  • +7

Bunch of DLCs are free too. Have to get them manually.

    • +1

"Bunch" = 2? All the rest aren't free or are "Coming Soon".

      • +3
        • Yep, just 2, but don't forget to grab them.

        • So it's just 2? I'm confused as OP says it's 3?

          • @OzBoganYeah: There were three - the Marsvision Song Contest was free too but is not anymore. When I grabbed it, it was free but they changed that - might have been a mistake on their part but the people who grabbed it get to keep it.

      • Yeah, just scroll down to the very, very bottom and there'll be a list of all the things you can buy or "Get" for the free ones.

    • Good spot DogGunn - no idea why someone would downvote so +1 from me for highlighting something I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

  • Interesting, whilst placing the order it told me I saved $699.

  • Hey OP, is there 2 or 3 free "DLC"? In the comments someone says it's 2?

    • Can only see 2 on the site.

    • There were three - the Marsvision Song Contest was free too but is not anymore. When I grabbed it, it was free but they changed that - might have been a mistake on their part but the people who grabbed it get to keep it.

Is it possible to put the game in my Steam account?

    • Very funny. Surely this counts as trolling.

    • +3

      Yep, buy on Steam

    • If you can get a game serial it'd be worth a try, could once activate some serials on both Origin and Steam so ……

    • No, Epic is trying to become the new Steam so they aren't sharing with each other.

  • -1

I have collected every single one of the games but haven't played them
    Epic must hate me

    • You're not alone!

      • Man here I am collecting all these games yet when the time actually comes I go back to playing a game I've been playing for years (CSGO, CIV V etc) instead of trying anything new.

        • Lol, the same :)
