What’s OzBargain’s Butter Chicken Recipes?

I love a good restaurant butter chicken. A solid western classic of Big Red tomato sauce and cream. As non-authentic as that may be, nothing comes close.

Being a bargain hunter at heart I’m not a fan of spending my cash back cash outs on takeaway when I could cook it myself. I’ve tried a few handful of recipes on Google and nothing tastes like the restaurants.

So, what are your best butter chicken recipes?

  • Not a big fan of butter chicken, having said that I love to cook other curry dishes. I found practice makes (not perfect) but close to good restaurants.

Just 1 tip for the chicken, works well when chargrilled or on hot coals. Gives a great crispy texture with a lovely creamy soft sauce.

Works well for most food prepared in this manner:)

  • Not sure, but I much prefer chicken tikka over butter chicken.

    • Chicken Tikka Masala is the REAL butter chicken.

Chicken Tonight? Or was it Kantong. Something like that! Tasted exactly like every restaurant butter chicken I've had lol

Costco Butter chicken is pretty good and not that expensive. We divide it up and freeze the extra.

  • Your Tomato Sauce based sauce is probably a big hit of sugar seeing as how most tomato sauce is around 25 % sugar. Which is fine if sugar is not a problem in your diet.

I have used this sauce that I found at Coles 'The Spice Tailor Classic Butter Chicken Curry Pouch', it is about 5% sugar and to my taste it is just like the Restaurant dish. I just cook up some Chicken with a few chillies and mushrooms, and then add the sauce, cook for another 5 minutes, and Yum!

Was going to recommend the Spice Taylor too. Wait for it to go on half price though.

Edit : I got mine from woolies.

This is the same as the spice Tailor individual meal packs, but you just use a few spoons, so works out much cheaper. I think I got mine at coles world square.
I add some garlic, sauté some onions and use chicken thighs.

    • When you mean same, do you mean it tastes the same or that it's produce by the same company?

      • Similar taste.

        • I've had their mango pickles before which was quite good. Will keep an eye out for their butter chicken paste. Cheers!

I find butter chicken too plain.
    I like to add veggies.
Green beans, brocolli and sweet potato seems to do alright.

    • We add capsicum and mushrooms in ours. Taste surprisingly good.

  • Have you tried the Maggi sachet?
I add a tin of diced tomatoes too.
    And up the cream content.
    .

    • My kids used to love that, with a few vegies, rice and the essential pappadums.
Passage to India is also quite good, and covers 1 KG, plus the Taylors one is quite nice. Admittedly they are not my preferred methods (ie Pataks, MC), but its good for people that are new to Indian, fussy etc.

Here's a tip for the Basmati rice. Add a reasonable sprinkle of Turmeric, Cumin Seed, and a sprinkle of Imitation Saffron powder from an Indian Grocery store. Then cook in the microwave or on the stove.
      Beautiful.

Another tip is to soak basmati rice for 15-30 mins prior to cooking it. I find that improves both the texture and taste.

The starchy rice water can be used to water the veggie patch if you have one.

        • I have to admit, i don't always have time to soak it, as i forget. But yes, or does come out better. I use a joseph joseph rice container that i received with the microwave.

try Patak's brand…I have been using this for years.

  • My kids love butter chicken. I was actually looking for an easy recipe a few days ago and made this one and it received a big thumbs up.

Agree with the other poster, if you can BBQ the chicken first it is much better, but of course that takes time (I didn't when I made this recipe)

  • Make sure to add peanut butter :)

  • Has anyone tried Bombay bliss butter chicken. Omg so good

    What’s OzBargain’s Butter Chicken Recipe?

    That's easy to answer.

    • First, download the supermarket mobile app and create an account for the free 10% discount off your first order.
    • Stack this with the supermarket gift cards which were on sale last week to further increase your discount.
    • The next step is to add the Butter Chicken to your cart on the app but then click the 'edit' button and remove the butter portion of the Butter Chicken. Swap this out for peanut spread as the total price then comes down from $8.99 to ~$6.99 depending on the local pricing.
    • Finally add the gift card code during checkout and ensure you select 'Click & Collect' to avoid unwanted shipping costs.

Follow my steps exactly as described OP and you will have a true, authentic OzBargain Butter Chicken - When it doesn't taste like how you thought it would and your not sure if you even wanted it to begin with, but you saved a couple of dollars and that's what it's all about!

LMAO, no shortage of people signaling that their taste palette is much too sophisticated to try something as pedestrian as butter chicken.

Get real, no one likes actual Indian food - rotten meat that needs to be covered in so many spices to hide the fact that it is rotten.

OP, it's not a recipe but I tried the frozen one from Aldi, it's good.

Please explain. I'm intrigued by your casual racism.

yeah, you like your rotten meat rather BBQ'd than covered with spices… Cant blame the restaurant for serving you a rotten meat with a rotten mindset that you have
