  • Just curious why laptop memory is cheaper than desktop?

    • +3

      Cos it's ass.
That speed at cl19 is why it's cheap.

      • Yup, there CL15 and CL16 for similar price when on sale.

        • Those are probably XMP timings and won't run at those latencies in a lot of laptops.
I paid a pretty penny for some 2666 and it only runs at 2400 in the end.

          • @coxymla: Yeah I don't expect much from laptop ram. Don't get me wrong, this is fine ram and I'd put it in my laptop, but laptop ram is cheap for that reason compared to the annoyingly complicated word of desktop room

  • KVR26S19S8/8
    8GB DDR4-2666 CL19 SDRAM
The SPD is programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR4-2666 timing of 19-19-19 at 1.2V
    Single-rank

    • I concur…. That I didn't understand a single thing

  • A bit off topic, but I got xps 15 9550 2x8gb ram. Thing is quite often, it gives me memory failure error (2 orange light, 4 whites). It fixed itself if I reseated the ram, but since it keeps happening, do you think I should replace the ram altogether?

    • +1

Take 1 out at a time and see if it's the ram or the connection.

      • +1

It always work again after I took it out and out it back on. But it keeps happening, so maybe the ram is broken. Very rare to hear a ram broke though.

        • I’ve had RAM fail me once. Couldn’t believe it. Thought that’d be the last component of a PC to fail.

    • RAM slot might need to be reflowed?

    • +1

Contact Dell support. I had an issue with my XPS 13 and they sorted it out outside of warranty.

Tempted but 8gb is enough for average users unless you are gamers or running something needs 16gb

I disagree. So I negged you. Please understand it is not a neg of malice. I am not negging you maliciously, just using the binary choice presented to me to express disagreement with your statement.
This is because Chrome is a notorious memory hog. And windows 10 isn't super lightweight either. If you were running ubuntu or something, maybe.
And if you're not gaming, what are you doing with your PC? Coding? If so, more ram allows you to hold larger code files in your editor and scrub up and down through it more quickly.
I also consider running VM's a crucial aspect of my everyday non-gaming workflow. Absolutely crucial. 8gb does not suffice for running VMs decently.

And if you're not gaming, what are you doing with your PC?

Are we forgetting the fact this deal is for laptop memory?
Also, there's plenty of uses for a PC besides gaming and coding lol.

      • +5

And I had to neg you. 8gb is enough for many use.

    • I agree.
8GB is enough for me. Sure 16GB would be nice, in the same way an i7 would be over an i5 (both 8th gen), but I don't believe it's necessary for an average user.

I would even argue that 4gb is still fine for the average user, especially if they have an SSD.

The data I've read still suggests that the majority of users consume around 3gb at most, and today's SSDs are ideal for swap memory. The mild performance loss isn't noticeable to most people, and the lifecycle of even cheap SSDs won't be greatly affected by writes to the swapfile.

Saying that, I'm personally happier with 8gb on a general usage machine and would be inclined to get 16gb on a new gaming machine. When I last tested my gaming machine, the only way I could get its usage above 8gb was to run a memory intensive game and open up about 30 Firefox browser tabs.

      • As I sit here with Chrome (8 tabs) and Spotify open, Windows 10 says that it's using 5.2GB in applications, and 2.3GB for file caching, with 400MB actually free. For sure, 4GB isn't really enough for normal use.

        • You pig! :P

It seems as though any "normal" memory usage discussion has to make allowance for the increasing bloat of Chrome. I've heard Spotify is bit of a hog, maybe the way it uses hardware acceleration?

Mine with Palemoon and 8 tabs just pushed it from 2.9gb to 3.0gb. If I added 650mb for Spotify I'm still below 4gb.

  • Amazing deal mate. I was searching for a deal like this. Any idea how long will this offer last?
    Planning to buy on 16th.Oct.

  • Noob question: I have a stock 4GB DDR3 ram in my laptop, will adding just one of this 8GB DDR4 ram create any compatibility issues or anything horrible?

    • +1

Usually, they run at the lowest spec of the pair.

    • +3

      Can't mix ddr3 and ddr4 so it won't work!

      • +1

Ah, I missed the DDR3 part, yeah you can't mix DDR3 and DDR4 together.

  • Gracias, my desktop just died it so this'll make my laptop feel more usable till I replace it

    • +3

Sounds like you best check your laptops specks first.

      • DDR3 or DDR4

      • Max supported RAM

      • Is RAM soldered on or RAM slot, if so one or two.

      • If system has 8gb ram already, won't make much noticeable difference for daily use.

      • Make your dissension based on above and budget as 4gb ddr3/ddr4 might be your max and cheaper

      • +1

It's an 2 year old Inspiron i5 7k, has a single stick of 8gb 2666Mhz DDR4 & it has a spare slot for another, saw it with my own two eyes when I was installing my ssd.

I program on my free time and am running sim/CAD software for EE at Uni so I've felt GC throttle quite a few times, so it'll make a bit of difference, and I use chrome so especially when I have chrome open ;)

        Cheers for the pointers tho

        • +1

Haha, I thought you were asking a question, but after reading your reply it was more of a statement.

Go for it, should speed it up for your use and last thing possible after ssd upgrade already.

Did you get one before OOS?

          • +1

@ozhunter68: Yes sirrie, first thing this mornin, now to check the mail every 10 minutes till it turns up haha

  • Quick question to the brains trust.

I have a stick of 8GB DDR4 2400MHz currently in my Laptop. Can I add this 8GB DDR4 2666MHz stick and it will just drop to 2400MHz without issue or should I just buy two of these and sell the old 8GB DDR4 2400MHz?

    TIA

    • Can I add this 8GB DDR4 2666MHz stick and it will just drop to 2400MHz without issue

Yes, but dual chanel memory won't work.

should I just buy two of these and sell the old 8GB DDR4 2400MHz

      Best option.

      • Would it be worth looking for cheap 8GB DDR4 2400MHz you avoid the hassle? They seem to be more expensive than the 2666mhz.

  • +1

    Deal still active!

  • A word of caution. I received my purchase last week. The ram was in plastic packaging and simply placed in a relatively thin bubble wrap lined orange envelope. There was no extra bubble wrap padding around the ram, which I would have expected as standard.

    A little disappointed.
