Wilson ProStaff RF97L Tennis Racquet $149.95 (RRP $300), Babolat RPM Team String $6.95 (RRP $25) + Shipping @ Tennis Only

130

Spend 5c more to get free shipping on the RF97L. Not the cheapest price ever (that was $135, less with the 40% off glitch, but that's not a real price), but a good price if you like this kind of racquet. Shipping usually $5 to metro.

My thoughts on RF97L based on my experiences:

  • Best for the average intermediate-advanced player, RF97 (regular) is too heavy for most players anyway
  • Decent for beginners although better beginner racquets exist that are lighter/easier to use
  • Good control, feels more sturdy than the weight would suggest
  • Reasonably light, lighter than my main racquet (ProStaff 90)
  • Great power for what it is
  • Would recommend avoiding a pure bed of conventional multifilament string eg NRG2, X1-Biphase, NXT because there is quite a bit of power already in the frame. Best used with monofilaments like ALU Power, co-polys like Cyclone, as a hybrid setup with a mono or with a multi+mono string like Multifeel.
  • Pretty popular in my local club -> probably a decent racquet.

Babolat RPM Team Co-Poly String 16G

My thoughts on RPM Team 16/17G based on specs:

  • Good for intermediate and above players
  • Strongly avoid if beginner
  • Best for spin
  • Could work with RF97L, depending on your playstyle
  • Would recommend most people go with 16G because it's thicker (more durable).

Cheapest item I could find - $1.95 in order to get free shipping. I am sure they have something cheaper but really don't feel like looking through their entire website.

  • Did we confirm that that past 40% off code was really a glitch? I bought a couple things during that and they honoured it, even though they turned it off on the rf97 after a few hours.

How is the tension maintenance on the RPM team? That's the more important question for poly, as for the majority of players the strings will go dead long before they break.

    • What are the symptoms of “dead poly” ? I’m on my first bed of poly strings but don’t know what to look/feel/watch for?

    • The code was patched within an hour from memory.

No clue on the strings. Never played with them before. I only use Tecnifibre Multifeel these days.

  • Would this be ok for a 11 year old intermediate player? He has always wanted a Pro Staff because of RF! I used to have one of the original Pro Staff. Looking at the one RF uses, it doesn’t look like it has changed!

I was always a Federer fan as well so I used the ProStaff 90 (heavier than RF97L) when I was playing competition when I was 16. I can tell you the RF97L is much easier to play with.

The issue at his age would be arm strength more than anything else. There are other RF branded junior racquets with a similar paintjob. I had a junior ncode 90 with a much lighter weight and head balance before I got my ProStaff that was easier to use before my ProStaff. So yes, he could use a RF97L but it wouldn't be optimal at his age. Don't buy him an RF97.

Federer has gone from 85" to 90" to 97" Prostaff racquets. So there has been a gradual increase in headsize consistent with the changes in tennis, particularly as Federer gets older.

  • Does anyone know how this feel compared to pro staff 97s (precious, red version), is there any big improvement ?

  • @StrayfireX, what would you or the other guys recommend for an adult beginner? Thanks.
