$14.95 postage for a stick of RAM?

    • +3

How do you think it gets to your house? Hamster post? Take a look at the prices for Australia Post or Courier.

They charge a flat fee per shipment so buy something bigger and you are paying less for postage. And eBay charge them fees so does PayPal on the postage cost.

      Free with eBay plus.

    • +1

Yes, it is inflated, and to some degree designed to encourage you to join eBay Plus. Nothing to do with hamsters.

      • and to some degree designed to encourage you to join eBay Plus.

Shallothead is encouraging people to join eBay Plus?

        • eBay is encouraging people to join eBay Plus, by encouraging shallothead and others to engage with eBay Plus.

          • @[Deactivated]: According to what sellers have said, they have no say as to what items get eBay Plus free shipping. I've purchased an LED panel from a seller before where one color temperature got the free eBay Plus shipping and a different color temp didn't. How would that encourage sellers to engage with eBay Plus?

            • @eug: Oh. I'd assumed sellers had to actively make some kind of arrangement.

Assumptions have gotten me this far so i'm not giving up on the whole thing just yet.

  • Great price thanks OP, tempted but my iMac says needs minimum speed 2666MHz DDR4 (for i5 processor). Wonder if that would matter so close.

    • +1

This is desktop RAM. iMac uses SO-DIMM, laptop RAM. You should also look for Mac specific RAM as Macs a picky about what will work.

  • Yes weird most new laptops come with 2666 speed.

Will the dual channel thingies works if we mix 2400 and 2666 speed?

Will the dual channel thingies works if we mix 2400 and 2666 speed with also different CL number?

    • +1

The dual channel will work but all ram will be clocked to the slowest stick.. so a 2400 cl17 with a 2666 cl16 mix..the motherboard will run them both at 2400 cl17

I have 16gbs of 3000mhz ram running at 2133mhz on a i3 6100 H170 motherboard because thats as fast as that chipset supports.

Most people buying this cheap ram may not be able to run it much faster then 2400mhz

  • I've got 2x4gb 2400 MHz RAM already. If I wanted to go up to 16 could I simply grab one of these? Or would I need to replace the existing 2x4gb?

Apologies as I'm not familiar with PC parts the much!

    • +1

You can but you won’t be able to use the dual channel support which is kinda like a fast feature. Fortunately, it works, so yeah go for it if you want. You aren’t gonna get the dual channel feature on your motherboard.

    • I'd say buy two of these and sell your old stuff for $40 on Gumtree

    • Well you need to check if you still have empty slots otherwise where you will put the new 8gb?

      • I've got 4 slots available :) Would I be better off keeping the dual channel 2x4gb or would the 2x4gb without dual channel and another 1x8gb be better?

        • +1

2x4gb's would be better if you PC doesn't use more then 8gb's

If you notice your PC going over 8gb's then 2x4 + 1x8 would be WAY better option :)

and you can always get 1 more 8gb stick in the future if you want to go back to a dual channel config.

  • Can anyone recommend good value ram for an e485 upgrade? Currently running 2x4gb but now ram prices are dropping I'm wanting to push it up to 16gb in the hopes of a performance boost for browsing, emulators, mid tier games etc.

    • By E485, do you mean this? If so, just any 2x8GB DDR4 2400MHz laptop RAM will do. That laptop that I linked (if it's the one you have) is capped at supporting 2400MHz so there's not point going higher, although if you manage to find faster for cheaper on clearance, it shouldn't be a problem. RAM timings aren't really going to matter either. Just try to get 2 identical sticks.

this is desktop ram.. not laptop SODIM ram

      • Yep, I'm looking for cheap sodimm. 2x8gb. Not sure if I should take a punt on second hand Kingston sticks or pay an extra $50 for brand new crucial.

  • +1

I've got an Optiplex 9010, so I'm fairly confident this won't fit as I need DDR3 up to 1600mhz. Let me know if I'm wrong here.

…However, everything I see in DDR3 is almost the same price - or more - than this post! Even two sticks of 4Gb seems to be no less than $44

    • Unfortunately ddr4 isn't backwards compatible with ddr3. Maybe take a look on gumtree or second hand eBay if you're willing to take a punt (I'm still deciding whether I want to do the same) or go brand new for sightly more.

      • Ironically the 9010's are such good value that it might work out cheaper to buy another one and cannibalise it for parts instead!

        • +1

If you're okay with some 2nd hand sticks, hit me up. I have some lying around that I don't need any more.

          • @OzBarAnon: That's a nice offer (depending on price, not that I have any idea on ddr3 prices)
