Devestating car accident, need a bike!

Hi Guys,

Thought I could turn to you guys for help, always been helpful in the past :D.
Last night I was sitting in traffic a few cars deep, a car going a decent speed decided against using his breaks and thought the back of my car was a nice cousion to slam into. I'm alright, and hopefully theres no problem with his insurance paying up, but my car is write off.

While thats all getting sorted Im looking for a low cost commuter bicycle. I've always been interested in riding but never had that final kick to take action (maybe its the whiplash). Can you guys reccommend any bike specials going on at the moment for a road bike?

This bigw bike from a few months ago is back in stock/ on special for $250 http://www.bigw.com.au/sports-leisure/bikes/bikes/adult-bike…

… but I'm willing to spend up to $1k on something.

Thanks guys youre the best

    Glad to hear your okay.

If you don't mind second hand, there seem to be a lot of lightly used bikes from people who thought that riding was for them and then never really used them (same as gym equipment).

Get this bike its an absolute joy to ride for the price and lockout for roads is sweet. If you dont ride so much then use it as wall art @$699

Added advantage that you can go around telling everyone that you own a Ferrari and not be lying!

Check the first picture, Im no expert on bikes but I think a bike with pedals might be more useful.

My suggestion for the commuting interim…get yourself into a nice safe Mercedes…bus class!!! ;)

If some halfwit managed to plow into you & write off your car, imagine what the plethora of idiots out there on the roads could do to your unprotected body! :o

  • Arent you glad you were not on a bike when you were rear ended?

  • The bastard lied about having insurance last night (or was seriously misinformed that rego covers damage to other cars)… but on the bright side Aami cover that even with third party insurance. Just a lot o' stuffing around.

Problem with the good ol' burly bus system is the wee hours I get up to go to work, and the just too far to walk location.

And that I wouldn't be sitting on a pushie, in the middle of rush hour on a friday afternoon on a busy road. ;)

  • Did you look around at Gumtree.com.au?

problem with el cheapos from big w is that theyre so heavy. which is why a lot people who want a cheapo bike end up nailing it to their garage wall instead of just hanging it… theyre just too heavy to ride…

i think trek make an ok ride bike

the bikes at anaconda arent to bad either… remember just keep the weight down.

    • +1 to this, also get a bike with road tyres, not stubbly off-road tyres and skinnier the better for lower rolling friction. Avoid suspension unless you have terrible roads (wastes a lot of energy just bouncing the struts up and down).
Flat bar road bikes are the cheapest and best option for a new bike rider like yourself.

I laugh every time I see people pumping away like lunatics on their mountain bikes as I effortlessly roll past them on my racer . Actually my bikes a fairly mediocre hybrid but having proper road slicks with low rolling resistance makes all the difference . I've ridden a couple of shocky equiped bikes and the just seem to suck up all the effort and make riding really hard work and add nobblies and it's like riding around with the brakes half on . Weight isn't that big a deal IMHO unless your going up heaps of hills . The cost of the bike goes up exponentially the lighter you go and anything under about 11kgs is pretty light . By the time you hit 8kg you will be paying at least twice what the equivelent 10kg bike cost .

Dont worry i laugh at people taking their roadbikes mountainbiking too…….

        • Some people do it for the exercise, or even just because a cheapie is SO cheap. I was thinking of getting a new mountain buke for road riding, need the cardiovascular workout more than I need to get anywhere.

could have been me. When I first started cyclying, I was pissed off that everyone kept passing me on my mountain bike with thick tyres. and no matter how hard i peddled I could never keep up.

I since have been advise that it's my fat ass tyres….or was that my big ass.
          I forget.

  • you could get a highroad, trek or bmc bike. hahahahaha…stuff that tour de france ppls use ;)
