BenQ MH550 Full HD Projector $809.10 Delivered @ Just Projectors eBay

60
PADDLE

I'd been looking for a projector to use for outdoor movies for my kids and their friends and had this BenQ recommended to me as a decent balance of quality and price. It's probably not going to get a lot of use so didn't want to splurge on 4K or anything too flash, but I'll plug in my Chromecast & hook up to a Sonos speaker for audio. At $809.10 I figured it's worth a look vs $899 on eBay and $869 on their website.

If anyone has any other recommendations for projectors to use for an outdoor theatre, please let me know in the comments.

I think this is considered an office projector. May not be optimised for movies. I'd suggest the BenQ w1090. Generally the go to 1080p BenQ in this price range

    • I thought that initially as well, but after contacting the company that sells these, they suggested to go for a multipurpose projector rather than a theatre one, but I'll certainly check out the w1090 as well - thanks for the tip!

Just checked out the W1090 and at 2000 lumens vs 3500 lumens for the MH550, I'm guessing that's why they recommended I go for the MH500 for outdoor usage as the extra lumens will make a difference. I have an old Epson projector with 1600 lumens but expect the jump to 3500 lumens to be significant, and necessary for outdoor usage.

  • Personally would go for a dedicated theatre model rather than this.

  • your problem is, casting requires power from a usb at least, and benq model with usb 5v is very expensive

Given I'll already be running power to the projector, I was just going to use a powerboard and plug the Chromecast and the Sonos speaker into that.

      • i see, i have this, but its just not clean, i mounted it, and i want a clean set up, USB 5v is the way to go if you want it clean.

So i opted for the more expensive model for another room, and yes its a lot clearer. Hopefully this helps!

      • Can you explain your setup? Which Sonos speaker are you using and how are you getting audio from the movie to the Sonos?

  • I paid roughly similar for an Epson TW5600 for the same use case, based on The Wirecutter's recommendation (specifically its endorsement as a cheap and bright option). I've been very happy with it, but I'm not particularly discerning on colour fidelity, etc, especially given I tend to be projecting onto off-white rendered walls in our backyard.

One of the best things I've done was get this Ikea Molger trolley (https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/80241411/), remove the rail on the top to let the projector there, speakers on the next shelf, powerboard on the bottom. Makes it way easier to roll the setup in and out of the house/backyard.

    • Thanks for the tip. I can't find the TW5600 on that Wirecutter link but from a quick Google search it seems to have plenty of positive reviews and is only slightly more expensive using the same ($836 vs $809) so I'll explore further. I wonder whether the 2500 lumens in the Epson vs the 3500 lumens in the BenQ would be noticeable.
And thanks for the tip about the trolley, great idea!

I believe the Epson 2100 in the Wirecutter article is the US name of the TW5600, but you should double check that.

          That is correct.

  • I have a budget of 2k for a projector what do you guys recommend? I don't have a low ceiling for mounting so something like the short throw one?

  • I have got a Xiaomi Mijia youth edition projector mounted on my DSLR’s tripod. My son is projecting cartoons on his bedroom ceiling every night, and I have used it a couple of times outdoors, although i will probably have to buy a cheap screen for the yard, as the walls are not white/grey
Here is a nice video about this item : https://youtu.be/Qkhn0RUcbfk

    • $700 ?

    • I watched the YouTube video and it's pretty impressive for the size and price.

But, it sometimes shows ads on boot up !?!?!?!?!?!

      • I paid around $650 from Aliexpress(including cashback) back in June.
It did show some ads 3 or 4 times within the first week, since then I haven’t seen anything.
I was planning to disable internet and hook up
my Shield Tv or my Mi box, but since the ads do not appear anymore, and youtube and plex work fine, I(my son) am very happy with it.

  • A couple of years ago when I was looking into getting a projector one of the better brands (if memory serves) was Optoma.

    Here's one for ~ $700 with 3,400 Lumens, native 16:9, DLP, full HD 1080p.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Optoma-HD27E-1080p-DLP-Projector…

Any thoughts on this unit, or on Optoma generally?

    Thanks

  • Hi all,

Not meant to hijack the thread however we are in sort of similar bought. We bought house and with that previous owner has left the projector screen in theater room. he had it all setup through roof cavity and all cables organised that way. I assume i should look for projector first with HDMI port and that raises question what type of projector….

Is it safe to say the higher the lumens better quality it is. we don't want something high end like 4k etc….just medium range….any link to what to look for in projectors would be help.

    cheers

Just a quick reply - lumens is not related to quality at all, it is simply the power of light output from the light source (projector light bulb).

You can think of lumens as the brightness setting on a TV.

The reason it's more relevant in a projector is because, unlike a TV, the brightness (lumens) required depends on distance of the screen to projector, and the size of the displayed picture (the longer the distance and larger the picture, and more lumens needed).

I think lumens were much more relevant in the older projectors with incandescent or halogen globes, with the introduction of LED bulbs the lumen output has become more or less irrelevant.

Because it's very cheap to produce a powerful LED into a poor quality projector (with the older bulbs the price of a light bulb replacement could cost as much as the projector itself) so manufacturers would place higher powered globes in the more expensive projectors.

      • H, thanks for explaining lumens bit. so the screen we have is 140X240 cm and distance between screen and wall mounted space for projector is about 400cm. Is there any guide based on these approx dimentions what lumens is minimum we have to go for…

So we plan to to watch DVD movies on this occasionally (not blue ray or 4K something), run TV on it for some sports and ideally have use chromecast for casting just in case. So we know that we'll have to buy a DVD + sound system for this. Trying to get around the connection though….

based on above, is t safe to say around 3 or more HDMI ports is minimum (1 for video, 1 for audio out and 1 for chromecast)….is there any other ports we need to look for to achieve the above use out of it….

        cheers

I second the 5600 as a great choice for you. I've owned lots of projectors over the last 25 years I'm not a noobie (just so you know the advice is reliable).
