  Not to be a tool but the best I seem to have found, is about 15 per dishwashing tablet.
  Admitedly I'm new to owning a dishwasher, but it seems odd to me to pay that much more? What do these puppies do?

    Once upon a time we use powder, pre-rinse, and rinse aid in different compartments of the dishwasher which open at different time in the cycle. Then we later they make compress powder tablets, then powder with rinse aid (the red ball which melt last) and then other ingredients added (eg bleach to remove tea/coffee stain) design to melts at different time in the cycle save you from buying ingredients seperately. Different price depends on the ingredients added. Important to use as instructed eg if you put these tablet in a short cycle you can see a red ball half desolve at the bottom, or if you put tablet in a wet compartments when it open tablet still stuck to compartments and drop in halfway thro the cycle and you see gooey half melt tablet at the bottom and dishes not clean. Or if you thro it at bottom it will all melted and get drain away at pre rinse. Use trial and error what work best for your machine
