As an aside, the heir to the Jameson Whisky fortune bought a 10 year old girl for 6 handkerchiefs so he could draw her being eaten by cannibals.

This article made me to empty my shopping cart.

      • And it will never go in my shopping cart or a glass, ever!

      • That was a really long time ago. What's your logic in holding someone accountable for something their great-great grandfather did?

        • +1

I'm not holding his descendant accountable, I'm holding the success of the brand accountable. It should have fallen in a heap because James Jameson should have spent his life behind bars… Should have, but didn't.

          I don't think that's unreasonable.

          • @justtoreply: The brand is a separate entity though - it doesn't make a lot of sense to arbitrarily spread punishment to a person's related entities.

          • +1

@justtoreply: If I understood correctly, he was never more than an heir to the company. He (thankfully) died before he could inherit.

            • @AlbyDuck: Thanks. Trying to Google it without much luck. Will remove neg for now

          • -2

@justtoreply: Seems a bit high and mighty. Are you a white Australian?

      • Terrible as the story is, what has that 130+ year old attrocity by a person in the Jameson family got to do with drinking this whiskey now? It says a lot about those times & privilege, not much about this drop.

How has the current product got issues necessitating a Neg vote?

Should every VW car or Hugo Boss deal be Negged because of their past associations to Nazis? The same website covers those issues

The person was from a wealthy "entitled" family, famous & rich for its whiskey production. He seems to have nothing to do with the whiskey, except having the family name & might have stood to inherit along with others.

But a "black sheep" / criminal in a family does not tar all of the family at the time, or for all time. And the current drop has nothing to do with the atrocities carried out by those during the dark days of colonial occupation & a very different way of thinking about human & other life.

Should current day graziers / meat production be held to account for the many massacres of the prior inhabitants of Australia, in the graziers' effort to benefit from taking the land from them?
Or all current cane farmers held responsible for the environmental destruction of introducing the cane toad?
        The history should be known.
        Accountability is more complex!

If we examine our own family histories, there may also be criminals or people we would rather not acknowledge due to their terrible actions! Does that make us terrible people?

        Further discussion

I don’t like Irish whisky in general, but this article double stamped to refrain from having this.

      • No wrong doers or criminals in your family history? (I'm checking mine.) Should we be considered bad because of them (if they existed 130+ years ago)?

I'm sure some of my relatives from that far back would make people worry today (no one talks about them!), but that should not reflect on me, or what I do or produce in the present.

How much food now is grown through the exploitation of vulnerable workers?? In some areas, workers die in the modern slave trade to make larger profits for businesses! Better stop eating!

What about all the wealth from the death & servitude of the historic slave trade, that some current businesses & countries have benefited from?

The story you complain about - was the murder of a slave bought by a Jameson relative 130+ years ago. That was 1 of so many thousands a year that died for the benefit of businesses & businessmen! That's probably why The Times newspaper saw no issue with reporting it.

Don't like Irish Whiskey, well did USA distilleries have a part in or benefit from that mass abuse & murder of humans?

For years, the prevailing history of American whiskey has been framed as a lily-white affair…
Slavery and whiskey, far from being two separate strands of Southern history, were inextricably entwined.

        https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/26/dining/jack-daniels-whisk…

And don't forget this country has a dark history of slavery to develop industries, & murder of indigenous peoples for their land & resources…
Many countries have similar dark histories. So we should condemn the current people of those countries?

Better do your research so you don't buy the products of other businesses that have family who were terrible, as you are so righteous!
