[Ex Display] Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens $179 (In-Store & C&C Only) @ JB Hi-Fi

130

This MFT/M43 macro lens is small and lightweight. Some may prefer more working distance and weatherproof (Oly M.Zuiko Premium 60mm f2.8) but this lens is smaller, lighter and focuses closer, also great as a ~'nifty fifty' in good light.
Limited stock, ex-demo, in-store only.
Quite a few around. RRP is $399, these were recently $299 at JB-Hifi, so a good deal.

  • Got one from Greensborough this morning, seemed to be new in box. They have another, there are quite a few around Melbourne. Might sell the Oly 60mm F2.8. Need to think about that one some more.

It's not an easy focal length to use.

    • You're not wrong.. its a macro lense and the working distance of this 30mm is a mere 1.5cm in front of the glass. Scares off subjects and makes it difficult to light.

The 60mm has a working distance of 20cm. A lot more usable.

Its a huge factor when picking focal length for a macro lense.

      • Having a look at this, the 1.5cm number is from the closest distance setting of 9.5cm. But that is from the sensor, not the front of the lens, hence the 1.5cm. I'm not very familiar with macro, and I'm wondering what is the furthest distance this lens could work with (if that's a thing)?

        • It will focus to infinity but I’m sure that isn’t what you meant. It is 1.25 :1 which means that at the closest focussing distance something about 10mm across will pretty much fill the frame.

At that extreme close working distance you may need to light your subject, use a tripod and focus stacking/bracketing, and choose subjects that you are comfortable being very close to.

For biting insects, snakes etc might want a longer focal length.

  • Ideal focal length for portrait shots.

  • It works on Canon?

    • You may be able to find an adaptor, but probably not worth it.

    • No, it is M43 Mount.

Gets great reviews and needed a macro lens. Anyone know how long JB hold click and collect orders for? Not much stock around me so will have to go for a drive on the weekend. Thanks OP.

Thanks OP, was just thinking yesterday that I needed either the 60 mm or 30 mm macro, guess this makes it easier!

Thanks OP, got one. Hope this doesn't trigger my dormant GAS again.

Thanks OP. Don’t assume it’s ex-display, mine was MIB.

Just picked up this deal today and did a quick test. It's very sharp and the Macro works very well… it will be my Macro lens for now.. just what I needed! Thanks OP.
