World Record Whisky Auction Price

BBC is reporting that a (i.e. one) bottle of 1926 60y.o. single malt 'The Macallan' was sold at auction for GBP1.5m (~AUD2.8m).

The bottle was estimated pre-auction to sell for between GBP350k - GBP450k.

Only 40 bottles from cask number 263 were produced; distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986.

Too much?

In fairness, it did come with two 1.25 litre bottles of Coca-Cola.

Both bottles of coca-cola were purchased from a BP servo too

Apparently those bottles were 75% off originally so they really profited.

The bottles of coke also made in 1926, and bottled in 1986

Better with eBay 20% discount code for $1.2M.

Don't forget Wish gift cards stack as well.

I'm sure Dan Murphy's will beat the price by 10% if you ask them.

what would be really disappointing would be to pay that much and not drink it.

but then again, its a status thing and would probably on sell it in a few years for a profit.

    • Imagine if the person decides to drink this and go to the toilet later. Does that make it the world's most expensive pee?

      • +2

its only valuable if someone want to pay for it. the whisky is only valued at AUD $2.8 mil because someone paid that much for it. otherwise its just a 60 year old whisky in a bottle.

find someone that will pay for the pee and you got your self liquid gold (no pun intended)

        • Time to create a listing on eBay to see if there are any buyers

This is called the bigger fool theory.

      • This is called, I got enough money to blow it, why not!?

  • Can it be sold as whisky? Surely after 60 years in a cask the ABV drops below the required 40%

    • Good question. It was labelled as whisky when it was bottled, so I assume that was the last time it was tested.
I suppose it is the same as buying an old bottle of wine. Is it still wine or is it vinegar?

    • correct me if i'm wrong,
the whisky is matured in casks. and then its diluted to the required minimum of 80 ABV to be considered whisky. so if you don't dilute is its bottled at cask strength

so after spending 60 years in a cask the angel share of the whisky would be what makes the whisky more valuable.

  • I think 1987 Michael Klim pool party competition, tamper proof lid error edition Cottees cordial will fetch more, before it became Coola flavour and concentrated.

Of course it's too much. What sort of idiot would purchase a bottle for $2.8 million dollars, only for it to be pissed out within 12 hours.

Michael Jordan is worth US$2 billion and gets $100 million a year passive income for Air Jordan revenue. He could probably drink a bottle a day until the day he dies.

While paying near three million dollars for a bottle of alcohol is bordering on obscene, there are people out there for whom a few million dollars on a bottle of booze is a relatively minor expense. It could also be a great investment when someone comes along who thinks ten million is a fine price to pay. People who pay $100M+ for a painting are not doing it because they like the way it looks.

For anyone who knows how much whiskey actually costs to make (under $1/L even for the good stuff) it's hilarious.
