What Is The Best Medical/Health Degree to Select in 2020?

Hey everyone,

Looking into some uni courses. I've narrowed down my choices to something within the medical or health fields. Seeing as MBBS is overcrowded with too many applicants and options if I don't pass the UCAT, I thought it would be best to consider other choices. Looking for a course which will lead to a good career, which has high job prospects and demands within the next 5 years.

Any advice/criticism will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Bear

Really? Anecdotally I thought it would be a tough business. High overheads with all the equipment, a steady stream of competitors and health funds trying to either scrape your margins or push members to another dentist.

My anecdotal feedback is radiology. You're not being squashed by retailer pressures, it's a need that isn't going to go away anytime soon and I've heard of a few people working 4 day weeks with nice pay.

Having said that, if you are passionate about a discipline - follow that regardless of anyone's advice. It's your life.

      • I'm not exactly set on one part of a discipline, rather just the entirety of the field. Which is why it's probably best to gain insight from a range of opinions at the moment.

If you want to know more about Dentistry, be free to PM me.

But I would not recommend it. Extremely high stress, high unemployment levels (for new graduates) and falling pay. There are a few dentists on the forums, that you can. Try to get different opinions.

Go with Optometry. Easy money, relatively high paying (100k) and very very low stress. I wish I did optom part-time…..

    None of the above.

Unless you're absolutely enamoured with the idea of entitled patients, people expecting you earn a lot and do so by thieving, having stress levels through several roofs…

Pick a job where the licensing body isn't salivating at the idea of justifying their existence through disciplining their paid members.

    • You had your say. Now back in you box, Doc.

      • Oh Kay :(

This was the way I looked at it, now I kind of wish I didn't because I just end up not exactly happy, interestingly I find I want to do something that interests me even if it means a pay cut.

In saying that I'd go for radiology, optometry, MRI, that sort of thing, fairly specialised, I imagine fairly easy once you learn what you're doing, good money and in a nice room having the equipment do the big work. Typically big expensive equipment don't get changed so easily so likely you'll be good for a long time. But then again I like working with technology so you might prefer different things.

  • MBBS (Commonwealth countries) doesn't exist anymore and if it does don't bother with it.

MD is the one you want. Internationally recognised.

I've always thought those professions were a calling. Personally, I've never heard the call. So, my only input is an anecdote:

I had a 'friend' whose father was once headhunted and offered $430k + 12.7% super + many other perks. He thought it was a joke and declined. He was a qualified ob-gyn with a phd in fetal therapy and stem cell biology and a Masters in Health and Medical law.

$430k+ p.a may sound like a lot of money but his young wife frittered it all away. His only legacy are the children that he helped bring into the world and the women that he saved from the brink of death.

Moral of the story:Listen to the call, do that and stay away from gold-diggers :p

      I heard the call.

"It will be fun!", the caller said.

"It will be rewarding. It will be a chick magnet. It will make you rich."

"Money, power, women, and a purpose in life? I'll take it!", I hastily said.

Like a blind date that makes you question your life decisions, my date with destiny was no different. The calling - she was no mid twenties five-ten ninety pounder.

She was mid sized quarter pounder with a five o' clock shadow.

Maybe it was the allure of inner beauty or a great sense of humour but a part of me suspects it is copious amounts of alcohol and several blows to the head during early childhood but destiny stuck around… also constantly stuck and round.

(I actually like my job but there was a time… )

      • thats true

        • Could you expand on that Pam?

          • @[Deactivated]: happened to me, I met a hot do this year but I didnt fit his mold so he stuck to his destiny and it wasnt me. I did receive 50 hangup phone calls tho, which strangely helped me get thru

            • @screensaver: PS I am not 100% certain he made the calls tho (disclaimer)

              @screensaver:

I did receive 50 hangup phone calls tho,

Could it be because he left something behind and was trying to get it back? His heart, perhaps? ;)

Don't lose hope, Pam. There's someone for everyone.

p.s: Have you heard of/ read anything by IVI? He's quite a character - would not fit most people's mold but if you scratch the surface, and scratch some more, and are happy to overlook his crimes against the English language, he's not that bad. Who knows, your destinies might intertwine and become one. Wouldn't that be lovely? :)

Pps: Were you able to find your notebook?

              • @[Deactivated]: it takes a lot to get my heartbeat racing, but he had the right prescription

                • @screensaver: The right prescription, you say? 🤔 Did you perchance have a kebab pizza with no sag in the middle on the weekend? Is that what made you sick?

                  • +1

@[Deactivated]: no it was the healing touch, did he have healing hands. But he only held my wrist briefly, nothing major, and back of the neck briefly

                    • @screensaver: If he wasnt so set on his destiny we might have had a chance. Anyway, got work to do. Gotta go and do some.

                      • @screensaver: He touched your wrists and the back of your neck and you fell in love with him and wanted your destinies to intertwine? 😯

Ps : If you decide IVI 's not your type…, you have quite a few admirers in this thread. It's always nice being popular, isn't it?

                        • @[Deactivated]: NO I would rather lead a quiet life. I almost made an exception for him but there were too many obstacles to overcome. So no.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: yes that had an 80% successful res. Notebook found, reschedule for most of the course, not all

OB-GYN get paid more these days. Their insurance premiums are through the roof because of angry parents who blame doctors for their miscarriages etc.

  • Would not recommend Optometry- its okay right now but will go the way of pharmacy eventually- too many grads, not enough jobs and therefore lower salaries.

I'd stay away from Dentistry, Pharma or optometry

I work as a Radiation Therapist (same level award as Radiographers, Nuclear Medicine Technologists etc) and any allied health position in Australia comes with positives and negatives…
Jobs are hit and miss. Some years, there's plenty, some years there's none. Be prepared to travel or move interstate to get a job.
Pay is good at the beginning, but after 16 years, I earn a whole load less than a mate who drives a mobile crane unit… and I mean a LOT less. He didn't spend 3-4 years studying at Uni and then intern/PDY on the job just to start at the bottom of a rather short ladder.
If you have the brains and the determination, go for a medical doctorate in something. It takes a long time to get there but the rewards can be worth it. Good pay (doctors deserve it), variable conditions can work in your favour, options for clinical or research based careers. Anaesthetists seem to have a good time, but are terrible conversationists, always making people fall asleep!

In short, anything in a publicly-funded medical setting will be underpaid for the work put in to get the job.

Have you thought about doing a trade?

    • I've specifically mentioned Medical and Health careers due to personal interests. I don't have any interests in trades whatsoever.

      • -1

It may not tick your personal interest box, but it may for job prospects and pay.

        • When I was referring to job prospects and pay, I was talking solely the medical and health sector, to satisfy both my personal interests and a stable career.

It seems like you kinda want to do medicine.

Go into nursing, work for a while then do a masters degree to become a nurse practitioner. They can prescribe some medications, order tests and diagnose patients, similar to what doctors do. In the public health system in NSW, their starting salaries are 120k a year and maxes out at 129k p.a. AHPRA registration for nurses is very cheap, ~$170 a year.

I have a couple of mates who wanted to be doctors, sat GAMSAT multiple times and couldn't be arsed anymore. Ended up doing nurse practitioner training and are much happier. Being a doctor is exhausting and expensive - long hours, ongoing study, making all the big decisions, expensive AHPRA rego (~$764 a year), basic physician training exam costs and CPD costs etc.

Dentistry would also be a good option. Good pay, stable hours, balanced lifestyle. Upkeep costs related to your practice will be relatively pricey.

  • What about paramedic, would be many easy shifts, ramping up at the hospital with a little old lady, some dowmsides, dronks and car accidents but a doctor has to deal with those too
