The $74.12 Amazon one (BRC460WHT) has fewer buttons but the same cup size. Any thoughts on which one would be a better option? https://www.amazon.com.au/Breville-BRC460WHT-Rice-Cooker-Whi… Edit: apparently the fuzzy logic is the prime difference. Yeah ok, Santa will opt for the Myer one.

  • Hi OP, one question is how easy is it to clean the underneath/inside of the lid? I’d imagine there be some sort of plate with a rubber ring.

Comparison of cleaning vs The old school rice cooker? Thank u

    • Not OP, but I have this rice cooker from a previous deal. The plate is aluminium with a rubber ring around it. It detaches and is pretty easy to clean, quick wipe both sides and done. Overall pretty easy to clean, but manufacturer doesn't recommend cleaning in a dishwasher.

      • Cheers!

  • i pad $70 last year :)

      ipad $70? what a bargain!

  • This or a Panasonic? Anyone tried both?

    • +1

We have Panasonic one and we really like it.
      No experience with Breville one

      • Panasonic ,,, no issues for the last 5+yrs with daily use

    • i'd go the breville purely because of the LCD screen showing how long is left before the rice is ready…

      • +1

…but not until it's nearly ready. The first 10 to 20 minutes you just get a circling line.

Also had the Panasonic for about 5 years (paid about $75 with OzBargain deal) and has been great. Nice rice and easy to clean. "Keep warm" function works well too.

  • Bought this earlier in the year and have been very impressed. Makes amazing rice.

  • I bought one of these a few months ago for a similar price at Myer (bought a $100 gift card and get 10% off too) and it's fantastic.

Rice was often microwave or boil in the bag because I'd often screw it up for many reasons. Now we eat rice often and it's always superb - I even tried throwing a load of spices and garlic that were shallow fried in ghee beforehand into the pot and it came out beautifully.

It keeps rice warm for ages without spoiling it too.

    Worth every cent.

  • I bought one in the last sale. Very good machine, makes cooking easier. We use it for soups, stews and other things - not just rice. Definately worth it at this price.

Bought one from Amazon the last time - extremely disappointed with it.

It makes clumpy sticky rice - every time. If that's what you want then fine, I suppose. But we like separate grains - this thing cannot do that.

It is so much easier and quicker to throw rice into a big pot of boiling water, boil for 11 minutes and then rinse. Much better results, quicker and a lot less clean up afterwards.

    • I wash the rice well and it is never sticky or clumpy. It may need a bit of work with the paddle it comes with but that's it.

Do you wash the rice? Are you using glutinous rice?

      • Washed the rice for use in this - using Sunrice long grain, which always comes out perfect when boiled in a lot of water.

In the cooker it comes out looking like this - which IMO (and more importantly in my wife's opinion) is terrible.

        • Fair enough. I generally only use jasmine, basmati and wild rice and never had an issue. I do tend to wash it many times though and break it up with the spoon or a fork as soon as it’s done.

          • @gasman70: We tried basmati with similar results. We'll have to give jasmine a go. We did find that brown rice wasn't as bad as the white.

Perhaps we should also try washing it more - but washing it too much seems to damage the grains making it more sticky not less.

            • @AdrianW: I’ve seen people wash and agitate the rice a lot in a sieve and perhaps that roughens up the rice? I just put it in a bowl in the sink, fill to near the top with cold water, swirl gently a bit, leave for a few mins, pour off milky water and repeat a few times.

When the rice is done, it sometimes can be clumpy but if I use the spoon to break it up immediately, all is well. I suppose the lack of movement of rice grains in the bowl will always lead to some clumping, when compared to hard boiling methods?

If that doesn’t work, maybe decreasing the amount of water slightly may help? If not, I’d ask for an exchange and see if it’s the machine that’s at fault.

              • +1

@gasman70: I don't think it the cooker that's as fault - it's more likely my expectations that are.

                • @AdrianW: Yeah, maybe you're right. The reviews are superb though.

  • For those who already have this, how long does it take to cook the rice please.
Asking as I had a tefal one that took 1 hour to do the job.

    • 20-odd minutes

  • anyone know how this unit compares to a cheap one like this?

    fantastic cooker however
    -a bit too large
    -cooks a bit slow
-doesn't fare well at keeping smaller amounts of rice at keep warm (rice usually goes a bit yellow or hard)

  • Bought this from the previous sale from amazon. After using it for couple months:

    Pros:
-Easy to use - literally one button to start the rice cooker
-The screen shows you the time left it takes to cook rice & the time it has been set to 'keep warm'
-Easy to wash - we usually just scoop left over rice out into separate container and then chuck the pot in the dishwasher. No wastage/leftovers.
-It is the rice cooker is definitely larger than your average $20 kambrook ricecooker.
-Comes with steam basket for if you want to steam veges while cooking rice or cooking it by itself.

    Cons:
-Takes a while to start up and cook
-No physical off switch on the machine you have to either pull out the plug or flick the switch off at powerpoint. (Unless i missed this entirely)
-No place on the machine to store the rice ladle. Personally, would have been convenient to have one.

I haven't used all the other functions on the rice cooker. I have made hainanese chicken rice and it came out perfect. Easy to make as well. Use chicken stock (homemade or bought, totally up to you) instead of water, and chuck a bit of ginger in and let the machine do the rest.

Overall my experience has been great. Like any rice cooker, it takes a bit of experimentation and balancing of how much water you need compared to rice to get the right texture you want.

    Good luck!

    Thanks op. Picked one up.

  • hate the hard to see number level in the Bowl and this one the vent seems to be easier for the starch to spill out and make a mess fown the back. apart from that everything else is good. They took away the scoop holder on side of cooker and replaced with a scoop that can stand.

    • Yes, the marks on the bowl are difficult to see; the cheaper version's bowl is much easier to read but I'm sure it's non-stick.

That said, I just use the measuring cup anyway.
