Board Game Recommendations for 2 Players?

My partner and I recently got back into board games, so far we've been playing Ticket to Ride Europe, Carcassonne and Pandemic. Also looking at getting Jaipur and Azul

Does anyone else have any recommendations for great strategy board games for 2 players?

Cheers

  • Game of Life. You get to have babies and put them in your car and drive around.

    • Already got that one - we call it Game of Twins

      • Did you enjoy that game? If you did, I would recommend Game Of Twins + 1 . Warning: it will test your limits and might drive you mad.

Happy to stick with Version 1 of the game. Not looking for an upgrade

    7 Wonders: Duel.

Best two player game I own.

    • +1 - was going to post to recommend this.

    • This one keeps coming up as a common recommendation on different blogs - I will definitely look into it, thanks!

Just wanted to come back and say thanks for the recommendation. Love the game!

        No problem!

Its surprising deep and very easy at the same time.

        Enjoy!

  • My wife and I enjoyed playing Azul in a group, so we bought it to play as a couple. The gameplay doesn't work nearly as well with only 2 people :(

Backgammon has always been my fave game :)

    • +1

Ah damn thanks for letting me know about Azul - will rethink buying it

    Uno - Its number 1
Uno - Its lots of fun

    • DRAW 4!!!

      • +1

        SUFFER!!!!

    • +1

UNO lost me when it confirmed that my favourite part of the game is against the rules i.e. you cannot stack draw cards such as draw 2 and draw 4 to make someone draw 6

      • No way, that's the best part! Unlimited swearing ensues.

    • Skipbo. Once you both get a hang of it, you don't even need to talk to each other!

The Mind (available as a paid app or in card form)
Set (Free apps or in card form)

If you're into Eldritch horror/fantasy, I love the hell out of "Arkham Horror" and "Mansions of Madness" board games.

A tad pricey but worth it IMO.

    • +1

The Arkham Horror LCG is probably our most played game (wife and I), it's not too expensive to get started but its just the right mix of character building, difficulty, theme and replayability

    • Thank you both! Have just found Arkham Horror on Gumtree on Facebook for $30-$35 ….. tempted!

      • +2

If you play Arkham Horror with the full rules the game is pretty rough but I love my games like that.

Constantly on the brink of insanity, or close to being unconscious, being broke, being stuck on one location because a monster moved onto a square you need to get to, all that good stuff.

With more than 2 people the turn rotations do get slower and slower, but it helps when you get good at the rules and can streamline it so everything moves faster. :)

If we’re going down the LCG route, you can’t go past Android: Netrunner. Officially discontinued but being carried in by a fan run organisation, NISEI. They’re about to release an introductory set for new players you can print and play for free or order from overseas card manufacturers at a good price.

Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle is pretty fun and good if you are a fan of the series.

    • Which one in particular? I see there's the 2-4 player Hogwarts Battle, and the 2 player Hogwarts Battle Defence against the dark arts. What do you recommend?

  • +1

Axis & Allies Global 1940. Force her into submission with your mighty Panzer divisions.

  • Pie Face

    • I thought they went into administration …. I loved their cheese infused steak pies mmmmmm….

Quacks of Quedlinburg is also great, above those already mentioned.

    twilight struggle

  • Hide the Peen

Don't play Monogamy. May have played a part in the conception of our 1st born.

    • Too late, got the buy 1 get 1 free deal

      +1 for Monogamy.

Fox in the Forest, it is a 2-player trick taking card game. Here's a review: https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/review-the-fox-in-the-fores…

The Switzerland map, in the India/Switzerland expansion for Ticket to Ride is designed for 2-3 players with a focus on collecting and completing tickets.

We haven't played the India map, but that map has a bonus for completing tickets twice (as in, creating circles) so I would imagine it's more cut throat than Europe.

The expansion comes with a two sided board and a pack of tickets for each, so you would use trains and train cards from the Europe game.

It is possible to get a 2 player pack for Catan. You end up with two "virtual" players that the two of you control. If you're desperate for Catan, it makes it work.

We have recently been enjoying replayable tabletop strategy games like Quarto and Quoridor.

You could also consider trying the Exit escape box games. Most of those are good.

Flick em up: dead of winter. I got this from a friend and it's fantastic for anyone. You can play from 1 player up to 10. The good thing about this game is that there are different scenarios to play which allows you to do either co-op or vs.

Santorini is a nice quick game that has lots of depth and tactics I'd also recommend

    • This - I play this with my GF who never understood chess.

It's sort of like 3d Tic Tac Toe imo, but alot of tatics, after the 5th or so game, you'll pick up more strats as you play.

  • Hive or hive pocket is great fun, kind of like chess a little.

  • Battle Line
