Garage Door Servicing?

Do you guys ever get your garage door serviced and is it something that is worth doing?

I was quoted $120 for someone to come in but I'm not sure what they actually do.

I lubricate the joints with a silicon-based lube spray occasionally when it starts creaking but have never really done much since the house was built about 8 years ago.

They adjust the springs tension too, or you can just wait till they snap like me and cost you $400 for new ones and a service :)

Well works out better for OP that way haha. 8years x $120 = $960 in servicing so far. Or the $520 for new and service.

Mine hasn't been serviced for 20+ years.

I'm sure you'll find the right lady eventually.

  • Which type of garage door do you have - the roll-up type, single flat panel or sectional flat panel?

  • You can "service" it yourself. The WD40 garage door lubricant and white lithium for the spring are at Bunnings.
If you have a panel door you have to check/adjust the spring as well. If you don't, the panel might be too heavy to lift and it will kill your motor.
My garage mechanic told me to service it every 2 or 3 years and he's charging $140.

  • The service will adjust the springs to the correct tension/balance - not a job suitable for the untrained.
Also, they may tighten the chain from the motor to the door.
    That's really about it.

If it is running smoothly then it’s probably the same as solar panel cleaning. Premium price for a service that typically isn’t actually necessary.
