  • Does Qantas ever offer something similar? and if so how often?

  • Westpac used to be 2pts = 1velocity
Now it becomes 3pts per velocity
Really bad conversion rate now 😩

  • Well over goes the flybuys points today

  • I have 133k citi points so now I need to decide between $600 of Coles egift cards ($570 value) or 61k velocity points.

I have a heap of velocity points already so I'm thinking Coles vouchers.

    • redeeming gift cards that you can buy at a discount ain't worth it e.g. your colesworth giftcards

      • Why do you think I mentioned that the $600 gift card is only worth $570. 5% discount.

        • well you have more options that Coles I would think..

just you mentioned your thinking of Coles vouchers and I had to say nooooooooo

          • @Poor Ass: Trying to get my head around this.
            2000 FlyBuys points = $10 @ Coles = $9.60 with Suncorp GiftCard.
Transferring these points to Velocity what would they be worth?

            • @skywalka: $8.70 with no bonuses
              $10.00 with 15% bonus
              $10.44 with 20% bonus

Only really worth it if they doing 20%+ bonus

65k Velocity Points get you one way business class from Sydney - Singapore (or neighbouring SE Asia countries)

      That's about $2000 min.

      • +2

I was just looking online and for reward seats it was showing around 80k from BNE

        • +1

          Use the 65k option + taxes ($80?)

Don't use your point to redeem for tax, it's not worth it.

          • @Serathis: It's not worth it to use the points for taxes.

            I had 80k points no tax or 65k points + $93

            15k point difference would be minimum $150 @ 1c/pp

If you use them to pay taxes you are getting around .6c/pp

            • @knobbs: But if you keep the 15k points for future Business class redemption (that's about 23% of a SQ J class VA redemption which is a 23% of a $2,500 ticket).

So your 15k point is equivalent to approx. $576.90.

The flaw in your logic is this. I just randomly searched for a direct Sydney to Singapore (8 hr) flight in economy. Scoot was $185, but ok, crap airline, so I’ll ignore that. There was also a Qantas direct flight for $350.

And, yep, you are right the cheapest business flight is about $2k. Would I ever pay for that in cash? No, so it is not relevant.

If I could fly 8hrs in economy for $350, what would I be prepared to pay for the same flight in business? This is obviously very subjective, but for me, I’d say maybe I would be prepared to pay double, but no more. So, $700 total.

In that instance, those 65k velocity points are actually only giving me $620 value (as above I value the flight at $700, less the $80 taxes still payable). Equates to 0.95c per point. Pretty close to the value I get from redeeming for coles vouchers. Note that I spend about $2k per month at Coles, so it would be spent very quickly.

        • lol I rest my case then if you're really comparing J and Y class now in terms of value for redemption.

Stick to your flybuys then and dont bother converting to Velocity.

          • @Serathis: I'd happily sell you 400k velocity points for the bargain basement price of 2.0c each. They are worth at least 3.0c to you remember.

            • @endolphin: It's okay I have enough and I can earn them for free. You should cash yours out for gift cards though, great value!

        • .. agree, it's up to the individual. seems like you've made up your mind with the Coles gift cards bringing you the best value (considering you spend alot there).

While I am not prepared to pay for the same flight in business, but I do enjoy the redemption value of J and the extras associated with it which you had not factored in like extra baggage, free food + shower (lounge), no queue when checking in/dropping bags (a big plus whenever I travel with family or long-haul for work)

          • @Shuey: Well I am factoring it in. I said I'd be prepared to pay double for business. So an extra $350. Others might be prepared to pay $1k extra, while some might only see $100 of value in all those extras. Completely individual.

I would say though that the majority of points accumulators would not be prepared to pay an extra $1700 for an 8hr business flight (the rough cash difference between the 2).

  • Which is better if only interested in Singapore Air?

    • Transfer from City to KrisFlyer and buy tickets direct
    • Transfer from City to Velocity and buy tickets for Singapore air via Velocity?
    • Depends on availability.

Buying tickets direct from Krisflyer is better (more availability) but more expensive (transfer via VA)
Buying tickets from VA is cheaper but lacking availability.

If you see the dates you want is available on VA, go Velocity

      • Agree on availability, a plus for KF is they release seats ~360 days in the future, while VA ~330 days.
But the premium use of points and tax payable on KF (it's a substantial sum), I usually opt for VA but need to be more flexible on dates

    • If you want to fly business or first you have to transfer to KrisFlyer, as SQ doesn’t release (much if any) premium classes to partners

      • I've redeemed a few SQ Business flights. But yes, it's not as much compared to Krisflyer but hey you save around 20k Velocity points!

        • Interesting. What routes have you been able to see SQ J or F availability searching for a velocity redemption? This has never worked for me and routes I've searched thus far.

          • @ajole: Well I just did a quick random search for J and found this:

            15th February 7.10pm SQ242 SYD-SG J for 65k VA points + $92.09

For F class, you have to ring them. It's not available online. I have done it before over the phone for F but its limited. Usually I'll go with what they have available so you got to be flexi.

            • @Serathis: If points didn't exist, would you be forking out the cash to pay for business, or would you settle for economy?

              • @endolphin: Haha, I think that's a really great question for yourself! Think about it then, flybuys or velocity? ;)

          • @ajole: I try to book J really far into the future to get the best chance of getting Reward seats (through VA). Not the through VA, they only release future seats ~330 days, while if you do it through KF it's almost 1 year. Been successful so far, but needed to be a little flexible on dates

  • Something is strange, I transferred my Amex reward points to Velocity this morning and the activity date on my account is: 31 Oct 19

And I have not received the 15% bonus points, does anyone know when we will receive the bonus points? Thanks.

    • AMERICAN TIME hahaha

      • so am I qualified for the promotion or not?

    • Same thing has happened to me. I'm sure it'll be rectified.

  • Points gurus out there, I've got 80k V points sitting there from that ANZ promo earlier this year. I understand V points have 2 (or was it 3) years expiry, during which time I must earn or redeem points to reset the expiry time period. Does transferring points count as earning points and reset the expiry date?

    • just use the velocity channel to earn some points via ebay or get a bit of fuel at BP to get you over the line?

      • "fuel at BP"

Yeah, that makes sense, I'd always forget you can earn points at BP. Thanks!

        • But BP is dropping Velocity as partner for Qantas soon lol

  • It says Westpac is included. Does anyone know if St George is part of this deal?

  • My brain is struggling to compute.

I have an ANZ travel rewards card. Earn rate is 1.5 points per dollar. 2000 points is 1000 velocity, plus the 30% deal

Should I move all the points across or keep using that card, as I also have a Westpac black Amex 1.25 points per dollar and can't for the life of me figure out the ANZ earn rate with this promo

Might also be due to this hour lol

    • Sorry did i miss something - I have ANZ , what is the 30% deal? Ii thought it was 15%?

      • The original bonus is 15% but ANZ adds another 15% to make is 30% all up for ANZ rewards :)

        Info from the website;

Turn your Reward Points into Velocity Points this November and you could be eligible to
        score 30% bonus* Velocity Points1

You’ll need an initial minimum of 2,000 Reward Points to redeem for 1,000 Velocity Points, and then additional multiples of 2 Reward Points for 1 Velocity Point.

Offer available from 1 to 30 November 2019

How we work out your bonus Velocity Points

*We calculate your Velocity Points by converting the Reward Points you are redeeming to Velocity Points at a rate of two Reward Points for one Velocity Point. • I just tried to transfer some flybuys points. "Looks like you're trying to do this from overseas", came the message. Well, yes, I'm travelling in Europe at the moment but it's still my flybuys number with the correct password and surname entered. For a comapny that is associated with travel, including travel overseas, what kind of narrow-minded stupidity is this?

(Expecting a reply from a "corporations can do no wrong" believer any minute now.)

    • VPN lol

  • +2

For the recyclers out there envirobank have been added to this promo as well for 15% bonus on crunch transfers to velocity.

    • would the 15% bonus points for crunch to velocity be the same ratio as flybuys to velocity?

    • so 10c can = 15 crunch credits = 5 velocity points = 5c of points = 5.75c of points after 15% bonus?

wouldn't taking the 10c be worth more

      • That would depend on what you are using the points for really

        • no guy the crunch credit conversion and not worth it at all even with the bonus

you gotta be at least getting 10 velocity points per can.. e.g. 1c per velocity point to be worth it

not 5.75 velocity point per can

there's no way for upgraded international flights you can do that

  • I'm almost at 1 million flybuy points. It's pretty stupid me just leaving them in there and I should starting transferring, especially since there is a yearly transfer limit, right?

    • That's almost $5000 worth of groceries?
      Wow.

    • +1

      Correct only 138k per year.

  • Anyone knows if we'll get the bonus right away or there's some waiting period? I need to book a flight soon.

I think transferring from Citi - Velocity - Kris is better than Citi - Kris. Can anyone confirm my understanding? I'm also looking to do the same for Bonvoy and some other programs as well.

    • No, its not. I've done the calcs before, still better Citi-Kris. Well for the plat anyway

  • I think someone answered this but can we do the transfer for ANY company on 30 November and still get the bonus or does it need to be in the Velocity account by then?

  • Just transferred from ANZ and got this message. Looks like i'll be missing out on the 15% bonus :(

"Congratulations, your Velocity Points transfer request is complete.

Frequent flyer transfers can take up to 18 business days to be processed."

    • +1

I've transferred from ANZ in the past on the last day, and it was all fine (does take a while to see all the points through).
