  • This may probably be my next phone but really, the V30+ is such a great unit as it is and it was effectively half the price (I didnt buy it from JB as stuff JB).

    • +1

Bad reviews on the battery life kill it for me, although I am in the market to replace my Xperia Z5 with a comparable phone with long battery life, and good camera.

      • +3

Had mine for 6 months and battery is a amazing. Can use it on the way to work, during lunch and home and it's barely down to 60%.

        Has a fast charge too.

        Great cameras also.

        • yes very good battery life on mine too.

          • @sayako: Thanks for both of your votes of confidence. I should investigate further.

My M-i-L has a G4 after a G3 and I've always had a good battery view of the LG devices, so this might be a hopeful option.

            Pax

            • +1

@pax: Really that g4 is still alive? Should have bootlooped by now :)

      • +1

The battery life on the V30 is stellar.

    • +4

Same. I never thought I'd go LG again after my Nexus - glad I did. My v30 is a great phone for $400. Nearly a year old and not an issue.

      • Ditto

      • Are you using Android Oreo or the new Android Pie? If it is Android Pie, is it a bit laggy? Read some report the phone runs smoother on Android Oreo.

        • +1

I'm using 9 (pie). No dramas mate. I really can't fault the phone. Lovely display, snappy interface and decent cameras.

Not a world beater, but it sure isn't $1500 either.

          • @maxwellish: I do have an issue with playing youTube 1080p HDR on V30+ though. It doesn't seem to be able to decode it quick enough. 720p HDR youTube playback is fine. Tried some alternative youTube apps, but no luck so far.

Also, loaded GCam on it to address front camera issue.

      • +1

Agree, I thought I would never touch a LG after my LG Optimus GT540 from many years ago. After owning my v30+ for nearly 4 months, it easily one of the best phone I've ever owned! Not bad for a phone that cost $399.

    • +1

Agree, the JBHifi $399 deal is too hard to beat. V30 specs still solid running every 3d game like asphalt, 128GB plenty of storage, no reason for me to change!

    • +1

The LG V30 is equal to the LG G7, and it isn't much worse than the LG V40.
So it's still the better deal. But yeah, for around $550 this is a good deal.

I don't know if its better value to get the LG G8 for $700 (not the LG G8s ThinQ).
The LG V50 seems pretty good, but its still priced above $900. Don't think its going to hit $800 before next year's handsets, so kind of a missed shot especially with the OnePlus 7 Pro/7t competing at that bracket.

    • +1

I'm still rocking my v30 from day one, no faults or anything whatsoever.

It literally has everything except for the stereo speakers and a bigger battery life.

The v50 would be a good upgrade for the the v30 but I'm waiting for a more polished version of the dual screen to come out kinda like the G8x but better.

    • +2

You whippersnappers. Still rocking the V20. The replaceable battery makes it immortal. Edit: Just saw the similar post below…

      • Haha, funny after looking up that word.

  • +1

    i want lg g8x :)

  • +2

Still rocking my V20. This V40 will be my replacement phone if i ever need to replace it. Love the V series. Super underrated and yet has a powerful DAC.

    • +5

True, the v20 is such a good phone.

    • +2

Apparently Android 9 is rolling out for it now.

      • Oh really, that's good news. Shows that LG still cares for V20 support after all these year. However, I am question if it's a good thing to update. Last thing i want is a super sluggish V20 because of the update being it a veteran phone :)

        • +1

It can be good, or bad. LG move at a glacial pace for updates, and there is a silver lining to that. Stable releases.

Their phones have had issues hardware wise, but I've never had a software issue. The bootloop fiasco was related to the SD chips IIRC.

      • For the V20 or V40?

        • V20. Saw it on r/android

          • @giventofly: Gee, I wished I got a cheap V20 deal when they were selling out if I knew this would get Pie. Might have to look for a good quality second hand and a few extra batteries to go with it.

    • +1

me too. its got incredible battery but its starting to wane a bit. been through 2 replacement batteries already.
honestly i dont even use the DAC but its such a good all round phone

      • +1

I'm a headphone kind of guy, and the V20 can power my heavy headphones (300 & 600ohms). It's good to know that if you ever buy a good wired headphone, the V20 can certainly power it.

        • Me, too. I bought them for the DAC, ultimately left LG for Samsung, and ended up buying a USB DAC because I missed LG's that much.

      • You can get 4200 mah (?) replacements batteries now. I've got two on the way from Ali Express. Fingers crossed.

  • -1

V40 ThinQ not sure if it has Quad DAC like the LG G8 which is a cut down version.

    • +2

      It most certainly does.

  • +3

LG v30, still a good phone. I always buy 12+ months behind the release date. Got my v30 2nd hand, like new for $150, discounted because of a tiny crack on the screen (can't notice it with a screen protector). Replaced a v20 with cracked screen that became sluggish. Maybe in 12 months time if the v30 becomes slow, I'll be able get a second hand v40 with a cracked screen.

    • +3

      That's the spirit

    • +1

What's with you and cracked screen šŸ˜‚

  • Can a v30 case fit the v40 ?

    • No, v40 is slightly bigger. My partner has a v30 and i bought the v40 a year later. Similar but you cant definitely tell the v40 is newer. Google assistant button, lock button (v30 has lock button in built with fingerprinter). It's really an improved v30.

  • How do you find GPS on this phone, is it fast and accurate?

  • The v40 costs 43% more than the v30, for that it has more RAM, a newer CPU, better selfie camera, an extra rear camera, and a slightly larger but notched screen.

I think the 6GB of RAM and 845 CPU may make it technically more future proof than the v30, but I doubt there are enough v40 users for LG to care.

If only it could be unlocked like the v30.

    • Unlocked?

      • +1

I was referring to being able to unlock the Bootloader on the v30.
When the bootloader is unlocked, you can flash alternate firmwares such as LineageOS from the xda developers website.

        • So, a local stock V30 you can unlock the bootloader, but the local V40? What about the local V30+?

          • +1

@ozhunter68: local v30+ can be unlocked. Most v30 can as well, due to a bug in the Oreo firmware which allows unlocking.
The v40 does not have this "feature"

            • @[Deactivated]: Thanks. No wonder the JB hif $399 V30+ deal is so popular. Tempting indeed.

What if you did the Pie update, no longer able to unlock the bootloader than?

              • @ozhunter68: For the v30+, as of the current Pie firmware, I think you can still flash early Oreo firmware to enable the unlocking feature. There are no guarantees that the feature will remain with further releases though.
Details on the unlock procedure are on the xda v30 website "WTF Guide"

6.4" QHD screen and 3300mah battery seems very small.

  • +2

I appreciate that the code looks like Large Arse

  • +1

Damn thats a good price. Bought mine about 2months ago with the 20% off ebay plus deals and thought that was a great price.

I'd never pay full price for any phone, but LG phone seems to take the cake for massive price drops.

My 2cents with the battery. Even though I only set the phone to medium setting for the resolution and auto brightness, I barely scrape in a day. An hour or so youtube in the morning and an hr or so during the day is usually my standard day. I've got the zerolemon like battery case and it's been great, I use it as my daily driver. One con about the case is it's very slow to charge as a pass through.

Great phone, perfect size for me as it's not much different width wise compared to my old s8.

  • Can confirm LG phones are arse. My nexus 5x boot looped.
