I watched a friend set up a Google Home and no where did it expressly ask him to consent to the ability for Google staff to be able to listen to his recordings and even if it's in the fine print a lot of contracts can change at any time without consent which you also agree to
All I want it to co-exist with the technology that enables so many great things in our lives without sacrificing our rights
My hero! If you hadn't pointed that out, I would have never realised they had a mic and were listening to me! No one has EVER mentioned this in any of these threads, EVER! Why doesn't someone tell us these things.

I quite enjoy being spied on, so much so that I now strictly call my other half Alexa each and every time we have sex and she calls me Google. Sometimes we mix it up and she calls me Siri, but that causes other problems (jealousy).
It's a great way to get a blue mood lighting in the room, we all love it.
And when purchasing them, we KNOW what we are buying and what they are doing. We are informed, consenting people.
Your personal hatred towards the products just fuels me to want to switch my devices on in the hopes it picks you up walking past my devices when they are listening.
@MorriJ: Do you think that if there was a big button on the device that when you pressed it stopped all recording being sent to Google/Amazon etc and only responded directly to voice commands without collecting any data.. that no one would push that button?
No.. you have to read through a 20 page contract that can likely change at any time with ambiguous terms that can be interpreted many different ways . So yes by buying the product and using it you are giving consent and maybe in this situation it's not that harmful now.. they listen a little bit to try and improve the service etc
But this model of implementation of technology becomes the norm and the pioneers like you that "Yeah I don't care just give them everything I have I've got nothing to hide.. there corporations will always have my best interests in mind of course.. why would they do anything wrong?"
Until there is a technology is created in which now you rely on for your life of which you have no control over because nobody actually questioned the ethics of these types of implementations from the start

@cr4sh0verride: You seem to think that I am uninformed, I am not. I know as much about the technology in play as anyone out there. I make an informed consent to give the companies access to my information. So much so, I am sitting in front of 3 alexa devices (gen1 show, gen2 echo plus, gen3 echo), 2 x Nest hubs and a Homepod. Like in front of me right now, I am happy for them to scrape whatever information they can from me. It's not that I have nothing to hide, I do - I smoke drugs, I commit crimes, I just do not care - nor do the 99.99999% of people.
I've sold more of these devices to our fellow Aussies than I can recall (Exit Shop AU - sole director, sold around 15,000 google minis in 2017-2018 via eBay). I effectively have sponsored Google getting into our bedrooms and I really done care.
You don't seem to realise the ubiquitous nature of information exchange and the fact that preventing it is pointless. It's not going to happen in a capitalistic world.
I would be more concerned about our government than a 3rd party in a foreign company to be honest. I know you think I say this with sarcasm, but I work in Fintech at the moment and with some rather ubiquitous technology footprints. At the moment, our government can request that I do anything within the scope of my knowledge and power to monitor and intercept your communications on the platforms I contribute to - and they are everywhere in your life I assure you. I cannot tell anyone if I am approached, cannot get legal advice (cannot tell my inhouse or personal legal counsel), I can be gaoled if I do not agree to write applications / modify code to give our government unfettered access to your communications. Forget google home listening to you, there are a trillion ways technology can be used to monitor you and our government has the most barbaric laws around it.
If someone in our organisation is approached (eg a cipher architect), they can be nuanced to provide access (eg installing fake apps, false updates, break encryption, bootlegging applications) without seeing a court order. In theory a court order is required, but if approached by law enforcement to implement something, cannot legally challenge it, cannot take it to a court for interpretation or decision (under the threat of immediate gaoling), cannot verify the scope of the request or ensure I am complying with a court enforced ruling.
Your freedoms are long gone, so are the next generation. Not purchasing these devices / expecting foreign companies to eschew our freedoms is just tin foil hat stuff. You cannot stop it, you think you can, but you cannot stop it.
As I mention, I know the products and technology well. I've sold thousands and thousands of these devices to our fellow aussies and made a pretty penny doing so. Capitalism makes the world go around.
And yes, I will make my partner call me Google until the cows come home as I simply dont care.
Edit: Before you ask, I am not downvoting you, I really don't care. Sprouting this stuff in a forum about saving money on the technology is not going to stop anyone buying it. Drop another $3 off them and people will drop their pants for them, you can't change that. It's great.

What's better than 1 microphone listening to everything you say? It must be 2 so it won't miss a thing! I have an even better idea how about 3 so they can triangulate your position and get even more metadata about you :)
