I was sceptical as well until I tried it. It helps you not move when you sleep. I believe I had a better sleep each night I used it.

I personally bought the gravity blanket can't comment on this brand.

Weighted blankets are amazing for sufferers of extreme anxiety. Couldn't function without mine. Even my wife loves it now.

So why is your wife anxious?

How does this compare to say, a box of Valium? Which I could also afford.

    • +33

I tried sleeping with a box of valium balanced on top of me, but I became anxious when it kept falling off.

      • +2

        Bigger box?

        • +2

Theres a joke in there somewhere about sleeping with a bigger box …

        • -1

Probably the bigger box would be called coffin

Some people prefer not to medicate, for a variety of reasons. The effects can last beyond when you want them to, you're not supposed to operate heavy machinery afterwards, not everyone reacts in the same way to anti-anxiety medications (see "Paradoxical reaction", which to be relevant can occur with benzodiazepams), and Valium specifically results in a rebound effect at about 6-8 hours due to active metabolites kicking in (and early binding then later release from adipose tissue), as well as other side effects like amnesia.

Furthermore, sleep aids may mean you go to sleep but it doesn't necessarily mean you get good sleep quality. The discussion on the specifics is outside of my field.

In contrast, should a weighted blanked be soothing enough to allow someone to nod off to sleep, they have the choice to use it or not - I'm sure you can understand how having choice and control is really important to anxious clients. They don't have continued subscription costs, and given the culture of being "more natural" this can certainly aid a client in feeling "more normal".

      • Benzo's are an absolute nightmare to come off after long term use (misuse and abuse mainly), far worse than any other substance. I don't think blanket has the same potential.

This blanket thing has me intrigued but. I found one on Amazon for $89 so I'm gonna give it a try. The one on this particular post is a bit too expensive for me, even with the discount.

        • If a person needs medication to be able to cope, then absolutely a blanket is not going to "fix" them. A lot of the time with anxiety it's about changing lots of small things in your life to help you cope overall. Being able to fall asleep easier, and not wake up gasping for air, or shaking to sleep, can sometimes be enough to help you cope with the rest of it- but absolutely no one should be thinking this is a replacement for medication without properly speaking to a doctor first.

also be aware there are different types of weighted blankets. Some feel like crap, especially the cheap ones. They can feel like someone just put a bunch of garbage on top of you instead of just a heavier blanket.

    • I appreciate the Simpsons reference. Looks likes it was overlooked by others…

Its the weight of a blanket that makes me kick them off at night. It has to be cold for me to keep the stupid things on the bed.

  • I think their pricing is off by a decimal point. That sounds about right.

Don't get sucked in to discounted $299 / $199 prices.
I got one here for ~$60.
Good quality, glass bead, soft cotton, heavy, comfortable.
The missus uses it & gets a better sleep.
    Doesn't do anything for me.

    • Good price but the pics show that the queen size isn't even as big as a regular queen blanket?

      • If you're thinking you need this for you & partner - then get two, you don't want to share a weighted blanket.

You'll also need a 15+kg blanket if you want a queen with the same weight/area & this will be unmanageable bedroom accessory.

  • It's like my mummy hugging me to sleep

  • Are they generally warmer than a standard blanket / quilt?

    • Not really, no. I didn't notice feeling any warmer (I tried my son's out for a nap one day).

  • No seamstress on Ozbargain to make their own it seems. Just get some marbles, sawing machine and voila, cheap blanket.

  • I've purchased two so far: one for my 110kg son (10kg blanket) as he prefers the weight on him when he sleeps. Always has, even as an infant.

The other was for a friend who suffers from restless leg syndrome (4.5kg). She said it's amazing!

I also like supporting a local, small AU business. They're good folks to deal with.

  • I bought from calming blankets because I wanted the bamboo blanket (haven't had it long but it keeps me cool, happy with my purchase but yeah $$$), I found other bamboo weighted blankets online but they were larger blankets for the same weight, e.g. not as much weight on you, most just on the bed around you.

  • I've only had my bamboo blanket from these guys for a few nights but I love it. I expect I won't be able to sleep without one in a few weeks. Having two single blankets on one queen size bed can be a struggle but she who must be obeyed always has extra blankets on her side so we cope. Highly recommended for light or restless sleepers!

  • Hi OP, do you guys have any of summer quilts for sale? Thank you
