Switching to NBN and What Will Happen to My Cable Foxtel?

Hi guys,

I'm still on Telstra cable and have Foxtel via cable also.

I am looking at switching over to NBN (HFC) for my internet, but wanted to know what will happen to my existing Foxtel?

I read that existing Foxtel customers will remain on cable til 2022/2023 i believe. New connections are all satellite.

I have also heard that NBN tech installs some kind of splitter to allow my Foxtel to continue working via cable even after my internet has switched to NBN?

Any feedback will be much appreciated :)

It'll be the same as how you have it now, but with an NBN modem plugged in instead of Telstra's. You must already have a splitter (or multiple sockets) installed if you've got both Foxtel and internet.

In the short to medium term, it will work as it always has. In the longer term, you'll be changed over the satellite.

Yes, that seems to be the plan.

That's generally what happens. However, you must already have a Telstra cable modem attached to the Foxtel cable. Basically, the NBN modem will replace the Telstra cable modem, probably just by disconnecting the coax cable from one and plugging it into the other.

  • Thank you for your prompt replies! You have been very helpful.

It's so frustrating that Telstra reps in their own stores don't know their $h*t (Or they do, and they just lie!!) i'm tipping it's the latter, they told me as soon as I switch my internet to NBN my foxtel cable won't work and I "NEED" to switch to iQ4 satellite NOW!!

They might be right, would you put some random posts on the internet's opinion over what you are being told by a telstra employee ?

When you instigate your nbn transfer, your backend will be changed, it may in fact be that your foxtel will stop working when you connect the nbn.
They do change things in the pit too which can affect foxtel.

  • Talk to Foxtel
    They should know.
But yes, all Foxtel will be via satellite either when NBN arrives or soon after.

The other option is "Foxtel Now"

Nothing changed with mine, but nbn was more than a yr ago. I didn't ring foxtel at all everything that was the least of my worries changing over.

  • Does anybody know if this is still the case a year later?

I heard that if you switch to NBN now, they change your Foxtel over to satellite (which I don't want).
