[OzBargain 13th Birthday] Brisbane Meetup Saturday 23rd of November 12pm, Big Roddy's Ribs West End

Hello all.

We had a great day catching up last year!. Super fun, sharing stories and having a laugh, free food and drinks.

I thought I'd put the offer on the table to organise another Brisbane meetup! If you're keen to come, please RSVP in the poll below. If we can get critical mass, it'll be another great day!

Here is a photo from last year at the Hula Bar and Grill!

Legend has it… if we get 15+ people, scotty will fly past in his private jet to throw down Ozbargain T-shirts for all in attendance.

EDIT:

We have now reached the magic number of 15!! The event is happening!

Some have suggested changing the date and/or time, while I like the idea, I think this wouldn't be best… as people have committed to this time.

Others have suggested changing the date to a non-central location (such as Sunnybank) I love Sunnybank and it's close to me… but again, I think it's best to keep it central. Somewhere open, spacious, with a big table where everyone can gather around really worked well last year.

I also want to try and sort out a deal. The Fork can take 50% off the bill for 14+ people at two restaurants. I've looked at both options however and I'm not sure they will have the atmosphere we are after

https://www.thefork.com.au/restaurants/brisbane-c692029?date…

Another suggestion was Felon's. I might give Felon's a call to see if they can offer us a deal. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

UPDATE!

Finalised! 12pm at Big Roddy's Ribs see you there!

It tried so hard with Felons and other places offering discounts, but none were right - thanks to those who suggested it!

    Yep, I'll be there!

If you have any ideas for where to meet, please post here. I feel it should be somewhere that we can AT LEAST get 50% off in true ozbargain style.

    • +2

if you move it to weekdays like Friday 12pm , try Hanwoori korean all you can eat buffet for $16.50 pp in CBD

      • +1

Hanwoori is a great suggestion, they have absolutely everything!

      • +3

I think most people will be working then? I know I work Mon-Fri…

        • I should add though, that does sound amazing. I love Korean food!

  • +1

A free meal is always hard to pass up

  • +1

Location and depending on if hubby is home to take care of the padawan, i am interested.

  • Interested but can’t do that day!

  • +1

    Possibly, not entirely sure though

  • +1

I'll be there, this will be my first OzBargain meetup.

I don't frequent the forums much, I'm lucky to have seen this post. Perhaps you will get more takers if this is posted as a deal?

  • +1

Keen for this one. I missed out last year, want to definitely make it this year(fingers crossed it happens with enought people interested!).

In terms of places to go, we could go to (Felons)[https://felonsbrewingco.com.au/] near the howard smith wharfes under the story bridge. It is quite nice there and good drinks however a bit expensive.

    • This is a great idea - I went once before and loved it - thanks for the suggestion!

      • All good. It looks like we almost have enough people to make this happen. Let's do it!!! :D

  • +1

why dont u just go to maccas

    • +1

To me, Ozbargain is not about getting what’s cheapest, it’s about getting the best quality for the cheapest price.

      • +1

That said, I’ve been loving these 30 days of deals

  • -5

Can we still attend if we did not vote for the Liberal Party and or do not love destroying the climate?

    • +8

If you plan to disrespectfully ostracise others/myself due to (your perception) of their political views, can I suggest you don't attend?

If however, you are willing to put political differences aside, enjoy good food and friendly conversation + a celebration of everything bargain related, we'd love to have you along!

If you must talk politics at this social gathering, can I suggest you do so respectfully and with an open mind? You are of course welcome either way.. I just want to make sure everyone has a good time as I am organising this.

  • Hmmm…I'll actually be coming down The Range to be in Brisbane that weekend so I'd be interested to see if something eventuates. Is the general feeling daytime or night?

  • +7

    Hey guys,

I run a fairly new seafood restaurant in Fortitude Valley called Louisiana Redclaw, it isn't like the usual seafood restaurants around. Yes being a seafood restaurant it is a little expensive but I can do a deal for you guys organise a tailored menu and will cost approximately $30 a head.

Have a look at our facebook page for the type of food we serve and read our reviews and see how much our customers love our food.

However we are only open for dinners Tuesday to Saturday nights.

It would be great to give back to this awesome ozbargain community which I have been a part of for over 10 years and you will also be supporting a fellow ozbargainer's business.

Let me know what your guys think. If it isn't for you guys then no worries.

    • +2

I'm interested to know more :)

What would the $30 include? Would be great to keep things in the ozbargain family haha

      • +1

Interested to know as well - could be a winner!

      • +1

Sorry for the late response guys. Just spoke to the chef and this is what he came up with for $30 per person.

As an entree you will get buffalo wings, calamari and chips.

The star of the show will be our prawns, mussels, corn, potato and spicy sausage boiled in our Louisiana broth and mixed with our Cajun signature Zing sauce and bread.

For desert you will get a serving of beignet (pronounced ben yay:)

I will post photos of the meal shortly once the chef cooks it up and poor old me will have to eat it all by myself, the things I have to do for ozbargain :D

        • So no crab, lobster, nor bay bugs :(

          • @leiiv: I would've liked to see some Qld redclaw in the mix.

            • @Last Seen: Well the entree sounds tasty for those that don't like seafood haha

        • +1

          Sounds awesome to me!

        • I'd love to go for this… but my main concern is it's not a lunchtime event. I feel lunchtime will suit the schedules of more people and that's the time people have committed to…

          • +1

@The Wololo Wombat: Yeah sorry, we don't open for lunches.

Another place I enjoy is Momo Chicken. Korean fried chicken and beer :)

        • +1

Forgot to mention it is free validated parking at Louisiana Redclaw as well.

  • Am interested in coming along as well!

  • I might come depending on the time and venue.

  • Any chance of tightening this up? I have to come in from Sunny Coast and need to plan work around it

    • We need 15 to say they are coming before this is official - we are currently at 14 :)

      • Your wish is my command waves hands

      • I've also confirmed I'll be able to attend now.

  • +4

Number confirmed — just need to find a venue!

    • -2

Any chance your place is free next Saturday?

      • +2

It's Brisbane meetup so the availability of my place won't be relevant. No, I won't offer my place up for meetup anyway.

        • Oh I thought you lived in BNE, maybe that was Neil? I was only joking about your place, would be interesting to see how our Ozb overlords live though. Are they normal or are they gods?

          • +5

@knobbs: Definitely normal. Still paying mortgages, council rates and kids' school fees, and try to find bargains to maximise savings.

  • +1

    Solid.

  • +1

Why not Sunnybank? Food is cheap and the sizing is ginormous.

Don't think I'll be there this year.

    • Sunnybank is also good

    • I'd also prefer southside-based places as well, Sunnybank or Upper Mount Gravatt surrounding

  • +1

Beerhaus Bowen Hills is offering 30% off via thefork for that day. I also like the look of Sea Fuel Milton (50% off) but menu is a bit limited for those who don't like seafood.

  • +2

If you're thinking of Felon's then you'd best get in quick as Howard Smith Wharves gets hella busy on Saturday. Parking can be an issue, so public transport or taxi/Uber/DiDi are recommended. If you want to drive and book in advance you can save a bit, though. The closet, of course, will be the HSW carpark but Secure Parking don't accept any of the current discount codes so it'll be $11 (including booking fee) for a couple of hours in the middle of Saturday. The cheapest one that's still reasonably nearby is 90 Bowen Tce on the Valley side at $6 (no code req'd); walk to the outdoor lift near the bridge to access the Wharves. Or there's Cathedral Square which is only a few minutes walk away; go across Queen St and down to the Riverwalk and you'll be there in about 5 minutes. With this option you'll get $8 parking with the RACQWEND discount code. If you're lucky and manage to snag on-street parking within cooee you'll be paying $2.30/hr at a 3-hour meter or $1.20 at a 4-hour, but the chances of that will be really slim.

    • +2

I think you need to become a parking consultant

      • LOL - I just happen to know that end of the city very well as I knew someone who lived in the Meriton building on the end of Adelaide St. Literally from the day HSW opened it became impossible to get on-street parking anywhere close to it, so the best options became the local Secure Parking locations within walking distance. Even taxi or Uber can be a gamble if traffic is really busy as it can take ages for them to get to the dropoff point.

Having said that, the venue is a great atmosphere and I've found the food to be really good and reasonably priced.

    • +2

Legend mate! I've just emailed Felon's -they are getting back to me re discount. I'll keep everyone in the loop and defs make a final decision by early next week :)

      • +2

Nice work! Thanks for organising. :)

      • Felon's walk-in menu looks good:
        https://felonsbrewingco.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Fe…

Do they have non-alcoholic drinks too, for those of us who don't drink alcohol? There's a kids section in the menu, I'm assuming they have something.

        • +1

Yes, they have a full selection of soft drinks and will provide table water on request. Not sure if they have juices as well, though.

  • +1

Odd idea… but I’m using the Liven app atm.

New users get $10 free through referral code and the $10 back for Brisbane promo…. referrer also get $10

What if we met at Westend, and just went around getting free food, in true Ozbargain style!?!

Literally $30 free per person! We can then finish at a pub and get a few beers etc :)

    • That sounds like a great idea but I wouldn't be able to commit to the time it would take. I'll be coming down from Toowoomba for the day so 60-90 minutes over lunch is the most I'll be able to do, and a single venue somewhere central works the best for me.

    • +4

If we're hitting west end (a great idea) we should definitely look at Big Roddy's Rippin' Rib Shack. Their ribs and burgers are ridiculously good. Pricing isn't bad either.

      • +1

I have walked past there a few times and have been keen to go back and try it!

      • Looks good!

      • +2

        Big Roddy's it is!

  • Being a northsider, I'm okay with Sunnybank as well as it's really not that much more time on the freeway, and access/parking might be easier?

  • Damn, i'm going to be working :(
Someone have a drink on my behalf!

  • Looks like 25 are confirmed to attend in the poll options

  • +7

Hi all - we are confirmed at Big Roddy's Ribs :) Cya at 12!

    • +2

      Excellent, thanks for organizing

    • +1

Oh man that sounds good. Wish I could come. Enjoy all!

    • Awesome! See ya then.

    • +3

Sounds great! I'm assuming we just rock up and ask for the OzBargain table?

Since I'm travelling down and needed to book parking I'll share again what I found. Secure-A-Spot has three carparks all within 300m: SW1 @ 32 Cordelia St, The Markets West End @ 79 Boundary, and 10 Browning St. The Markets is $8 (inc. $1 booking fee) without needing a code, SW1 and 10 Boundary will both accept the RACQWEND code to bring them down to $8 as well. If you happen to also be seeing a show at QPAC on the same day and have parking included in your ticket you can stay there, but I'd advise against going there otherwise as you'll be paying $17 for the day.

      • +1

Or, if you're not in a hurry, park for free on Gladstone Rd Highgate Hill, and catch the 196 bus for $2.65 (adult off-peak) each way. If you're a senior, bus travel is free.

Note that this is in the Highgate Hill parking area, but there's no time limit on weekends: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-and-transport/parkin…

There are still a few areas with time restrictions, they are all signed.

Note also that the 196 bus isn't particularly reliable for timetables, if you park by 11:30am you should get two opportunities to catch successive buses.

      • Just re-reading what you said, as you are visiting Brisbane, do you have a GO card for bus fares?

If you don't, your carpark option is cheaper. Bus cost without a GO card is $4.80 per journey, and no senior discount.

        • +1

No, I don't currently have a GO card, thanks for the reminder. Your option is cheaper for residents, mine is best for out-of-towners. Group effort FTW! :-D

      • plenty of free street parking nearby

        See https://www.parkopedia.com.au/parking/locations/big_roddy%25…

        • You might be lucky to get free on-street parking, but it's in the middle of a high-density housing area, and the apartment buildings were built at a time when council didn't require even one carpark per apartment. It's also within short walking distance of Southbank, the QLD Performing Arts Centre and the Convention centre, and about 10 minutes walk to the Queen St Mall.

Every time I drive through the area, it's parked out. Keep the alternative options in mind, in case you can't find a carpark.

        • +1

3spots free from 12. It's a loading zone from 9 to 12 Saturday but otherwise free other times on Saturday.

    Any chance of shirts? @scotty :) :) :)

    • Unfortunately the shirts probably won't make it on time.

      • Is there any other way of getting a shirt? I was really hoping to pickup one of these at the meetup

        • +5

We have been doing this Instgram competition for quite a few weeks and are giving out 3 shirts every 2 weeks due to low number of entrants — almost 50% of chance if you submit something original (instead of spam).

I'll try to post a box via Express tomorrow (after getting TWW's postal address). Finger crossed that it would arrive by Friday.

  • +1

Dont forget Big Roddy's is on amex shopsmall.

Walking back to the car with a big smile on my face after meeting up with the OB crew in Brisbane. Great food & drink, good company, and plenty of laughs & conversation. A huge thanks to @The Wololo Wombat for organising and @scotty for getting some t-shirts up here in time to hand out (and, it’s rumoured, for helping to foot the bill!), and a special shout-out to the handful of OzBargainers who showed up and aren’t even members (yet)! It’s times like this you understand that OzBargain is not just a web site, it’s a community, in the truest sense.

    • +2

I agree. Thanks tons for organising @the ninini Wombat and @scotty for supporting the meetup! The food and drinks were great and the people even better.

Special thanks for getting the t-shirts sorted for us in the last minute. A great afternoon indeed!

Looking forward to the next one already. 😊

      • +1

Haha inside jokes already! Was really a great event, such a great time :)

    • it’s rumoured, for helping to foot the bill!

I hope so, otherwise I walked out with a belly full of ribs, wings and beer without paying!

      • +2

Fear not, Scotty has already paid me back! Legend!

  • +7

Thanks to all who attended! Was the best yet and can’t wait for next year :)

    Here are a few photos!

Great to meet you all. Had lots of fun! Thanks Wombat for organising the venue and to Scotty for taking care of the bill

  • Totally forgot about this. Hope it was fun! Great Pics

  • +6

Everyone, if you don't want to miss next year's meetup, set an alert:

    • log into OzBargain
    • Search for "Brisbane Meetup" (with the quotation marks included)
    • when the results appear, click on "create alert"

That's it! You'll get an email every time there is a post containing the phrase "Brisbane Meetup".

    • +1

Thanks - set up for next year. Missed seeing it this year😢

      • Does this work for "Price Error" too?

        • +1

If the search finds the sort of deals you're looking for, then it will work. Try setting several with variations, like "pricing error" as well.
