I had an argument with a JB hi-fi sales assistant the other day where they were saying vinyl is better than CD because CD is compressed and vinyl isn't…
Vinyl is great for other reasons (mostly subjective, like warmth of sound or the tactile relationship with the disc) but vinyl master's are produced from the same digital uncompressed mix as CDs are.
not always produced from the same, it is common for it to be, and depending on the genre / level of production / budget, but for those who have the budget to get a seperate master for vinyl do. Most major mastering businesses these days both locally and internationally offer digital/CD and Vinyl mastering options.
They are not always produced from the same masters but CDs are certainly not compressed. Sounds like the sales assistant had no idea what they were talking about though.
The reason I collect old vinyl is hearing the original or older masters, buying new release vinyl is a bizarre thing to do because it mostly just sounds like the CDs, it’s not worth the price you are paying. Saying that I’ve bought a few regardless
Obviously the JB guy had no idea what he was talking about.
In saying that, vinyl often didn't have the same mastering in the past because of digital compression hence why there is some preference there as well when the cd master was terrible.
