Weber BBQ Sizing and Portability Advice

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice regarding Weber BBQ’s. just my partner and I renting at the moment, would like a bbq that’s portable to take camping but can also use at home. Stumbled on this brand.

Hoping to buy one if on sale around Black Friday. Any size or model recommendations to feed the two of us plus a couple of guests? Is it a good brand? Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

  • We got the Baby Q, which has been great for us in the past few years we had it. Haven't taken it outside of our house yet. No problems feeding household of 3.

Only thing is, I keep thinking we should of got the Weber Kettle instead for that yummy charcoal taste that coal BBQs produce. Gas BBQs are easier, but the taste ain't quite there.

Get a smoking box and throw that on the grill, works wonders and you can experiment with different woods for different flavours.

I've also got a Baby Q though the premium model or whatever it's called. The temp gauge is handy but the real benefit is the lid is taller so it fits larger roasts. Easily portable. I purchased it with the plan to take it camping as it's becoming harder and harder to have open fires ruling out camp ovens etc for much of the year. Easily big enough for a couple at home even with a few guests over.

      • +1 on this, smoker box has been revolutionary to my BBQ experience. Most places will have a box for around $20 and chips marked with what type of meats they go well with.

      • Thx for the tip :D Will look into getting this!

Baby Q if you want portability. It is a great bbq, we use it for 4 people quite happily. Were a little worried it would be too small for us but we've found it just right. You can see them in BCF if you have one near you.

  • Thanks for the advice peeps. How is the build quality of the Weber Baby Q? Is it something I’ll have for a long time if well looked after? Also does it throw out a lot of heat?

    • It should last at least 10 years and it comes with a 10 year warranty. It's worth getting a cover for it if it will stay outside.

  • I am absolutely enamoured with my Lodge Sportsman BBQ. It is so small and does so well I am actually BBQing 3-4x more often and have done two solo BBQ.

I suspect I'll be doing more 1-2 persons BBQ once Melbourne enters spring.

    • Just googled this. Won’t suit my needs mate. Need one with a trolley (foldable) so I can use it at home and camping.

      • Trolley does make it less portable.

I don't know your exact requirements but reconsider the need for a trolley. You can just as easily make one, even a foldable one.

Did you get it from this deal?

      • Yes.

        • I wanted one so bad but I already have a Ziegler & Brown grill and a cast iron fire pit :(

@[Deactivated]: Trust me, worth the hundred bucks or so.

It's much smaller so less fuel needed to fill the pit. Smaller so it gets moved around more.

I've used mine indoor (extractors on of course), on the patio, boat and out by my tiny little lake. I'd never have moved my "portable" Weber.

I picked up a baby q that someone had thrown out in a council pickup. It looks decent just igniter didn’t work anymore. Took it home gave it a wipe down and looked good as new. I even emailed Weber and said my igniter doesn’t work anymore and they sent me out the new part for free!

  • I have Weber Q (next size up from baby) and love it. It cooks evenly across the entire grille and reasonably quick with lid down. I have used it at parks and at home. It's not that big to transport and can cook more than a baby size.
I've fed 10-15 people on it, obviously with several meat runs and not much of a long wait in between meat runs and it does a good job.
It's not the easiest item to clean, just requires effort.
I had it for 5 years and it still looks brand new.

I find other larger BBQ's either takes forever to heat up, uneven heat or loses heat which makes the cooking unpredictable or inconsistent. The Weber doesn't have these issues.

I still prefer charcoal cooking but that takes some time to setup and more attentive cooking required as it burns very hot.

  • I love cooking in my Weber. "lid down" cooking does take a little to get used to however you can taste the difference. As for size the below should give you a fair idea of how much food you can cook on each model. Judging by your post i'd reccomend either the baby Q or original Q depending on how often you entertain.
    Baby Q - Good for 2-4 people
    Weber Q - Good for 4-6 people
    Family Q - Good for 6-8 people

That's not to say that you couldn't cook for 6 people on a Baby Q, or 10 on a family Q, but you would definitely have to rotate food around or cook your food in stages. Just my 2c.

    • Yeah, we did 6 big porterhouse steaks on my Weber Q last weekend, definitely couldn't do them all at the same time on the Baby Q.
However it is slightly less portable, especially with the stand that I have for it.

  • The Weber brand has some good options, if you are looking for recomendations though I'd throw the Zeigler & Brown portable models into the ring. They are sold through the BBQ Galore franchise and are similar in style to the Webers in design after trying both I've found that the Z&B models have more BBQ space and better heat distrubution at the same sizes to the compartive Weber and is also cheaper. Check out some of the bundles here for different combinations of accessories like plates or cart types with each grill https://www.barbequesgalore.com.au/barbeques/barbeque-type/p…

  • We have a Weber q. Great piece of gear. Take it camping and feed our family of 5 comfortably. Also cooked roasts in it for Christmas dinner.

It’s not super portable, but without a stand is compact enough to fit in the car or caravan when we travel. I bought a canvas duffel bag to transport it in, the shelves fold inside and there is enough room to throw the utensils inside it too. I just use a portable work bench if I’m using it at home, or we have a small folding stand for the caravan.

    • Great review. Thanks for that, this is really helping my decision. How is the build quality of the hood? Sometimes with barbecues the hoods are very subpar and constant use ruins them.

Thinking about getting a grey (think they call it graphite) one so it doesn’t show as much dirt.

      • TBH ours spends a lot of time in the duffel bag, so doesn’t spend a lot of time in the sun. Build the coating quality on the cover seems pretty good. Seems to be well built, aside from the folding shelves aren’t very strong and have a lot of flex in them. Wouldn’t want to risk a couple of kegs of snags on them!

  • Great thread. Was gonna start the exact same one… Still unsure of which size to chose. But probably gonna go for the regular Q.

Any predictions on where they will go cheapest on black Friday? Or has that already been?

Applicances online seem competitive and do free delivery.

    Cheers
    Nils

  • Are the webers easy to clean?

    • Same as any other BBQ IMO. The food you cook makes more difference than the BBQ.
