First 5 Lane Drive Thru Only KFC Opening tomorrow, thoughts?

https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2019/11/kfc-just-opened-its-wo…

Tomorrow in Newcastle a world first, 5 lane Drive thru only store is opening.
From what I've gathered, 2 lanes are your traditional Drive thru experience, and the remaining 3 lanes are where you preorder on the App or KFC website, enter your 4 digit code into the kiosk at the speaker, and then once your order is ready to pick up the boom gate opens and you drive forward and pick up the KFC.

Seems like a interesting concept.

Sounds like a secret recipe for disaster

  • Ok, so it's a drive-thru only store, I get that…

But five lanes… how is that going to work?

Is it five ordering lanes, and like all stores it filters into one for order collection and payment? Or are there multiple collection/payment lanes as well?

    • From what I've seen, the 5 lanes all have a boom gate which only opens when the order is ready to be picked up.

so what happens when they give you the wrong things in the order like they normally do

        • +9

          Need a 6th lane

        • I get KFC maybe twice a month or more. I have never had the wrong order. Maccas on the other hand….

          • @richadam: I have had them give me two buckets instead of one once when the 9 for $9.95 deals were around here in Sydney.. sucks because I really only wanted one because two buckets for one person is just insanity.. even though now I would probably happily welcome it.. at the time it was cheaper for me to just get the deal instead of anything else on the menu.

  • What is the perceived benefit to the consumer?

    • +4

Don't have to use legs, can now just roll right through

      • But they already have drive-through stores?

        • +3

The more people rolling the better. Also don't have to clean up after people, let them filth up their cars

      • I'm interesting in seeing how you drive if you don't use your legs.

    • less queuing

      • Perhaps.
Depends on how many actual service windows are open and the capacity to fulfil the orders from 5 queues (including the app-based / online orders for collection).

    • +1

More to the point, what is the perceived benefit to KFC? Profit by more cars/customers per hour (per minute?) and employing less staff. Full stop. Including, as already pointed out, those staff who had to clean up the shameful filthy mess left by many sit down customers.

After reading this riveting information i am left cold and unemotional

Sooo… is Newcastle a rough neighbourhood?

I remember the euphoria turned outrage when customers (ever so slowly) pieced together that the Krispy stores were predominantly opening in low social economic hoods.

    • Probably a good trial area. Years ago Newcastle had an all you can eat buffet store, remember making the trip from Sydney just to try it.

Discovered that there actually IS a limit to how many pieces of KFC you can fit in your stomach.

      • I have no problems with businesses doing business where they think the business is.

It's just funny that people get outraged that their neighbourhood is getting a particular business as they'll get fat/etc.

        I mean… self control anyone?

      • +1

back in the late 90's there was an all you can eat KFC in Carlingford on pennant hills road.

    • in this case its probably also land/rent is cheaper so if it fails the loss isnt as bad

  • I wonder if they’ll have a foot/bicycle lane? Seems a bit exclusive for cars only. Maybe you could call an Uber to take you through?

    • +1

Some may even call it an educated guess but I don't think the patrons of a highbandwith distribution system for greasy poultry would be making their way there via self propelled means.

  • I got negged off on a Macca's thread negotiating with the power of blocking the drive thru with my demands lol .

Imagine what I could do here , I assume all combine into one lane at the cashiers window :)

    • From what I've seen they only let you up to the cashier window when the order is ready to be picked up.

As well I think you can completely bypass the cashier window and drive around it.

    • +1

But they don't serve coffess at KFC! You have no power here lol

    • +1

      I still haven't forgiven you

    • +1

Negotiating? You mean behaving like an entitled dick?

      • Once Johnny Boy this tattoo covered gentleman came to my window and said " I don't give a @# there is a cop station across the road you'd had better wipe that smirk of your face or I'm going to smash it out "

Just like him with you I can't get it off lol :)

        • Case in point. Keep digging, champ!

You might have 5 lane drive thru, but we have h&s 😉

    • Ooo. Let the battle of the regional hubs begin!

Its not going to stop the taragos full of bros. They'll turn those 5 lanes into a car park every friday night and dollar wings day

  • +2

I never go drive thru as my kids and wife change their mind about a million times when ordering which drives me crazy, they also don't seem to have full menus to help you choose what food you want. I'm more talking about maccas and hj here as I don't really go to KFC.

    • The menu thing drives me ducking crazy. Why the hell don’t they show the whole freaking menu!!!

      • Because they don't want customers taking forever to order.

    • KFC ones are entirely static and show the full menu.

    • This

      I feel your pain.

  • It’s bad enough when there’s 2 drive thru lanes

  • +2

Hmm.. meat and cars… watch the greenies kick up a fuss..

  • +2

This is why terrorists hate us?

    • If I had to get my limbs shot off for some caliphate deniros to buy myself some sex slaves, I too would be hating on the tarago full of bros on a deep-fried highway to flavour country.

  • Retro branding I see

  • The boom gates are a good idea because people really can't be fair at the Maccas 2 lane drive thrus. The amount of times I've had people try to cut infront.

    • Yeah, only issue is what if you get 10 cars come in at once who all havent preorderd. The 2 Speaker lanes get clogged with 5 cars each and you have to wait for 5x the length to get server.

What a time to be alive!

    • Great if you’re real hungry and need a greasy chicken fix real quick.

      • I'm not convinced that it will be any quicker than their current drive-throughs.

        • Bucket launchers will ensure your skepticism blows up in your face.

        • Strange how the correct English spelling of"drive through" looks weird after years of seeing "drive thru"

  • This may indicate how understaffed or slack in service they may intend to be

  • Awesome. People in the future will be so fat they don't even need to burn calories walking into the store to buy rubbish!

  • Keep left unless overwaiting

  • Has anyone been?
    How was the experience?

    • From what I've heard its been like a carpark with hundreds of people trying to enter.
