Why Are Games So Big Nowadays?

just got my amdrewards and dl'ing gears 4. 133.74gb, gonna take 8 hours at my current speed, thats bigger than my entire steam library. are they just too lazy to delete the waste resources not used in final build? also cutscenes, i remember the days of ff13, they should give an option for compressed cutscenes.

    Textures, models, lighting and sounds.

Yes, but there are other factors like Map sizes, longer conversation, more cut scenes etc etc.

Though I would say another hidden factor is compression. Previous games were either required to be squeezed on a single or a couple of BluRay's (usually compressed x4), or older were squeezed into DVDs (x6), or actual old titles which were squeezed (x8) into CDs. Then there's retro classics like Doom which was around 40MB but compressed to 2.4MB amount (x15) and split into two Floppy Disks. Patches and DLC were around, but internet speeds were low, and PC Storage was a commodity. As these shortcomings were solved, people moved away from physical disc to store the game, to simply downloading everything from the internet.

Basically the philosophy has changed. Now, most games are only compressed by x3 and when unpacked, they take up storage sizes of anywhere between 50GB's to 200GB's. So you can fill out your entire SSD with as many as 20 games (dreaming) or as little as ONE game. Things look to get worse with the advent of next-gen consoles like PS5 and Xbox V.

and those don't even include 12GB updates lol

    • Yeh it’s crazy hey. Reckon there have been a number of 12gb+ updates too (maybe 2-3??)
Had to take my Xbox to parents house to minimize download time for the first 80gb one lol

Gotta love having an hour spare to play NBA 2k20 and there's a 30gig update.

      Battlefield V. Every. F***ing. Time.

    • gotta force them ads somehow

A lot of the time it's because things like audio/video are in there several times for each language instead of just being an optional download. Not to encourage it, but many torrent repacks of games usually more than half the size by breaking the other languages into optional downloads.

    • yea i know about this, i remember wondering why witcher 3 goty was much smaller than base game (35.9gb vs 50gb just for base). so from this example alone i know how bad these language things are. remember seeing people whine alot about ff15, it had 2 cutscene versions the actually game was less than 20%.

  • So do games not come on a CD anymore? I haven't bought a new console since I bought a Wii about 10 years ago.

lol all games require massive dl these days. pc games mostly just a code now, console require 20+gb updates. but gears 4 gets the medal for being bloated, most games less than 90gb.

      • So can you connect an external hard drive or you just have to use whatever storage the consoles come with?

        • yes u can use external hdd. the download time is the main problem, hdds are so cheap.

    Graphics.

    /thread

  • Sound in particular is a big one, surprisingly so

    Because they've grown larger.

Example game: DOOM (2016) appears to be 68.8GB
    textures are 44.5GB
    sounds are 10.1GB
    videos are 1.53GB
    game resources are 12.2GB

So graphics take up the largest section

Currently in Asia, away from the piss poor tincans and strings of the australian internet infrastructure. Speedtest showing just over 500Mbps. So ~150gb download is easy. That's like 1 hour tops.
If the rest of the world has these speeds then this size of downloads barely affect the experience at all, so no reason to worry about staying under 50gb or anything.

Don’t most Asians live in those piss poor tin cans?

      • No they live in houses and apartments

        • Most Indians defecate on the street. You’re telling me they live in houses?

dl'ing gears 4. 133.74gb, gonna take 8 hours at my current speed

8 hrs?! This would take me a week….maybe two if other people are also using the net…..

    • Its about 3-4hrs download time for me.

      • Welcome to Australia, the land of super fast leading edge SPEED.

      • I may have exaggerated the period, but we have a stupid rule in our household - if you're not on the computer and actively using it, you MUST turn it off, so that means I can't just simply leave it over night to let it go….

        • Ouch. Yeah that rule will definitely not help in the time it takes to download.

Coz most of the developed world don’t have shit internet like aus.

  • This is why we need gigabit NBN.

    • Scratch that, we need terabit NBN… Some of us want the play the game within a second on purchase, or at the most, a few seconds…Who's gonna wait minutes. hours or even days just to download and install when you just want instant gratification?! That is what games are for right?

  • Not all games need downloads. I buy physical copies and most of them were ready to go from the disc
