          nah, i'll stick with HD

  • what is the transfer rate of the sata connection on the internal drive, just curious if the usb3.0 speed applies if the sata speed is slower

    • The OP and site list the Western Digital 3TB 64M IntelliPower SATA3 Caviar Green. Which will be around 80-100MB/s. So it'll be limited by that before the USB3.0 limit (~600MB/s) kicks in. But still far above the USB2.0 limit (~30MB/s).

      • sweet. thanx. cheapest hdd only i could find was $165 + delivery.

My WD Scorpio Black with my custom USB3.0 case never gets more than 100MB/s read, but…

        Read - 4.83GB File - 93MB/s

        Write - 4.83GB File - 66MB/s

        Read - 10.9GB File - 81MB/s

        Write - 10.9GB File - 75MB/s

This wasn't done with any synthetic benchmark, but copying HD movies to and from my hard drive.

        ACCURACY - Within 1MB/s (+/-)

        • Your speed is capped by USB 3.0, not the Black.

        • No, it isn't. It most certainly isn't. USB3.0 is capped around 600MB/s. The Scorpio Black is under 100MB/s regardless of the connection type. It doesn't even approach the USB3.0 cap.

    • SATA II or III it makes no difference, a typical mechanical drive would not be able to even use SATA1 to its limit

      • Even SATA iii will be pushed to the limits in the next few years, maybe not with a mechanical drive, but with a solid state drive for sure. For example the OCZ Vertex 3 is suppose to get up to 550MB/s read - I have actually seen with my own eyes on of these getting 500 - 520MB/s read. That's roughly 4 Gigabits/second and is already exceeding the SATA ii limit of 3Gbps
