GST on Items from Overseas

I'm just curious as we pay GST on goods purchased from eBay and Amazon if buying from overseas and other retailers it does not include all retailers, maybe due to the smaller retailers don't sent over a certain amount in value like Amazon and eBay do etc. If that makes sense.

So say I have been buying from sellers, eBay and other places who don't send to here, I'm right in saying nothing has changed in regards to this of $1000 if your over that then GST etc applies but anything less not.

I have had numerous items sent to be it New Zealand, UK, China, Korea all over really and they go through customs and never any charges for GST etc.
So I take this only applies from companies ie like eBay and Amazon etc we pay these charges.

I will have a bunch of stuff being sent over from family in which as said purchased from many places over several months and was curious on the GST thing.
As long as I'm under the $1000 I'm all good right.

Yes, if the seller doesn't charge you GST you don't have pay GST unless it's over $1000

  • Just like in Australia, you can seek out local sellers who don’t charge GST at craft markets etc.
But if you buy from the big sellers they do.

Don't charge GST or don't remit GST?

      • Indeed. But even so I expect to be surprised at the GST this will end up collecting. I imagine it will be substantially higher than forecast, and Gerry Harvey will whinge there should be a higher GST on imports.

From memory, any overseas seller that sells for then $75,000 in value of goods into Australia is required to charge GST on the gross value of the shipment, regardless of the value of the shipment.
A shipment from your family, with an invoiced value of less than $1,000 would not attract GST

    • Ok cool that's what I thought but when all this kicked off i thought it was everything coming here regardless or price as like otter countries. Hopefully it stays as is only over $1000 but still sucks though it even started with the like of ebay and amazon etc where its now costing us more.

  • So what if the value of items is less than $1000 but the shipping just takes it over the $1000 I take the shipping does not count or it never in the past.
