Looking for underwater camera

I'm looking for a high quality pro-sumer underwater camera.
At the moment the Olympic E-PL2 with PT-EP03 Waterproof housing looks like the best I can get, but the best price I've been able to find is ~$1500AUD delivered.

Prices on cameras in Australia are a bit ridiculous, does anyone have experience buying them from overseas?

  • just buy a waterproof camera bag. they're like $30 and work well unless you go very far udnerwater

    • I will be using it for depths > 10m, including snorkeling and free diving.
I used to have one of those rugged 10m waterproof cameras, but they are limited in what they can really achieve with the quality of their pictures/speed of operation.

What I am really after here is any suggestions for getting good camera gear without paying Australian camera gear prices.

  • +1

    Try www.bhphotovideo.com

it is an amazing store with good prices great service and a very good reputation

    • Looks pretty good. Camera seems ~$100 cheaper than most, waterproof housing is regular price.

      Thanks for your help

  • try on ebay

  • Was in Hardly Normal last week and overheard the salesperson telling a customer that the warranty on the underwater camera he'd purchesed didn't cover the seals, so this might be something to double check when making your decision.

  • The seals are the only thing between the water and your camera internals, it is important to look after them. ie dont jump from the boat with the camera, have someone pass it to you. Inspect the seals before each dive. Dont put vaseline on the seals, this will degrade the silicone o-rings causing the camera/housing to flood.

Try to get a camera/housing with dual seals. Contact me if you need any advice, I am happy to help.

  • Quite a few yrs ago I spoke to a photographer who does a lot of underwater photography. He uses a D2x ($8000 camera at that time) with a underwater housing which costed more than the camera. I then ask him about warranty for the underwater housing. He said there is NO warranty for underwater housing for your camera. and equipment, which is why you have flood insurance. But he does this for a living and he knows how to maintain he seals on the housing which he does at regular interval and he checks it very often.

    • Just picked this up at harvies for $359.

Not a grey import so covered by au warranty.

  • Just got one from http://www.wix.com/orzcustomer/orz-dgtal they sell cheap and good quality waterproof digital camera and camcorder
