Dragon Kamado $399 (RRP $499) @ Barbeques Galore

120

Hey Guys

Kamado Dragon down to $399 @ BBQ Galore normally $499. Great value as the Bunnings equivalent Akorn (same design, only difference is colour and the side trays fold down/up) is $549 (https://www.bunnings.com.au/char-griller-akorn-kamado-kooker… comes with a heat deflector and cover) you can purchase the equivalent deflector from Bunnings for $63.50 it suits the Kamado Dragon (https://www.bunnings.com.au/heat-deflector-smokin-stone-akor…).

I know it isn't the cheapest price ever, but for $399 you cant go wrong. Had a mate telling me to get one for a year and bit I purchased one a few months ago, best money I have spent.

Great BBQ, probably not as good as the ceramic ones but I’ve never owned one of those as so expensive. Got the Bunnings version for $350 years ago, still going strong. Iron grill is super easy to clean and you just open the vents at the end and it’s shoots up in temp then just brush off. Doesn’t use much fuel as you control the burn, and can turn it off at the end. Very versatile for cooking styles, worth buying a remote temperature sensor though.

    • Agreed. It's a great starter and got the hang of how much fuel and temps etc don't roasts, shoulders and everything between.

Will use mine for a couple of more years then look at a ceramic.

Had my one a good 4 years now so might be a while before you need that ceramic version.

  • So, no real difference in terms of performance comparing to Akorn Kamado?

The same, my mate has an akorn.

Thank you! My friend has an Akorn too which seems to have more reviews than the Dragon so I just wanted to have fellow Ozbargainer's view on it.

i wish this came around again for 299 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/200669

    • Yeah I found that when I purchased mine a few months ago. If only, still great value for $399

  • I'm waiting for Bunnings to get the Akorn down a bit to use the Drone voucher. Fingers crossed

    • If only -.-

Both this Akorn and the Dragon from bunnings are great options. I got the bunnings version last year, definitely recommend picking up the heat deflector if you're going for any long cooks.

Literally no difference in cooking on these versions vs the ceramic ones other than you save a couple thousand. My father-in-law has gone through two of the ceramic versions - one from heating it up to fast and splitting, the other from it cracking while being moved. So in those respects the Akorn & the Dragon are far more forgiving.

They're big enough to (just) fit a whole costco brisket on yet can still do a fantastic steak or pizza.
I've cooked for over 16 hours on mine several times with plenty of charcoal left when I was done and I'm a definite beginner.
First few cooks you'll get smoke coming out of gaps and stuff, they soon seal over.

    Thing is, this is just the beginning of the expense, other things to consider;
decent lump charcoal - cause it's ozbargain, aim to get as close to $2 a kg as you can. I'm not a fan of Mangrove personally.
Elbow length gloves - like fireslap or similar so you don't burn yourself
gardening gloves - for handling the cold coals so you don't get soot all up your hands
a bucket - for ferrying the coal from your garage to the bbq.
Wood chunks - like cherry, apple etc
BBQ rubs - you can buy em or make your own.
An esky for the final cook stage - not your current one, that's for the beers- and probably some cheap towels cause the wife doesn't appreciate you staining the good ones with meat juice (speaking from experience)

Best purchase tho is something like the Smartfire or similar. An electronic fan and temp probes combo hooked up to an app on your phone. Takes all the stress out of long cooks, you can put something on the bbq and go to bed or head out for a day of golfing without worrying you'll come back to find the temps soared or your coals went out. Not cheap, but worth it in the long run.
