I called up to cancel my American Express card. And after going through all the questions and regular Spiel The customer service rap offered me 30,000 points if I decided to change my mind right then and there. Thought I’d share this with you all

ANZ did the same thing to me, but 20k points. Took the 20k and cancelled the next month.

Every time I have cancelled an AmEx card (even when not specifically saying the word 'cancel' or anything like that like others have suggested) they have told me that is against the law to offer any points to incentivise me to stay (have cancelled 3 cards so far with significant spending history on 2 of them - Altitude Black and Qantas Ultimate Cards).
Seems to really depend on which call centre operator you end up talking to.
whaat, i did that the last time and was told it's illegal and they cant offer me anything to keep. Which amex card did you have?
Same thing happened to me. Wouldn't offer me anything to stay.

even more jawdropping! 30k to stay on an essential?!?!!?! I was cancelling a $375 amex plat and they said goodbye without any hesitation :(

yea they aren't supposed to do this anymore. friend tried to threaten to cancel and they just immediately cancelled the card without making any offer.

This happened to me about 6 months ago. Velocity platinum AMEX, said they'd give me 25k velocity points to think about it for 3 days. I took it and cancelled as soon as the points hit my account. Easy points.
All depends on how you ask now. If you say I want to cancel, they will.
If you say, I have been a customer for 3 years, I was wondering if there are any bonuses if I stay another year. They will offer something

I actually like my AMEX Qantas Discovery card with no annual fee… I'm thinking it's not worth the risk of bluffing and then having to cancel it, and having to set up all my direct debits again.
