try dahl- lots of nice recipes and quite cheap or have a look at
    https://gamechangersmovie.com/the-ultimate-plant-based-thank…

ignore the hate- you'll live longer than us :) or your friend anyway

    • The first recipe on the page: "Country Fried Crispy Tofu Turkey"

      OP can't eat legumes.

    • oops i think dahl is a legume, depends on how bad the reaction is, your friend can try desensitization therapy, but obv under doctor supervision.

Being allergic to legumes, is going to limit yourself to pretty much seeds and mushrooms. Grains will be fine. Check out vital wheat gluten. It's a processed flour that is incredibly high in protein (IIRC 70g/100g).

A lot of people make seitan from it.

  • olives

  • Hemp protein.

I switched to it to reduce the bloated feeling I got from having whey protein.

    Fwiw, I'm definitely not vegan.

I'd definitely recommend heading to an Accredited Practicing Dietitian. They should be able to help you with finding sources of protein, as well as guiding how you manage other dietary requirements that you may not have been aware of. It may cost a bit for a visit, but in the long run could save you from some major health issues.

  • Can vegan eat lab-grown meat?
Can allergies be cured or at least reduced over time?

  • Being allergic on an anaphylactic level to all legumes is extremely rare, but your friend might want to do things properly if so and get all allergens tested before playing around.

Even if we're only talking a bit of redness and itchiness, what's the point in recommending all the hipster seeds, nuts and grains if they're allergic to them too. Having one allergy makes you more likely to get others.

    Anyone suggested semen yet?

Are they going on a cruise?

  • Become a Jain! They eat virtually nothing but have not yet disappeared from the earth.

Sounds like your body isn't suited to join the vegan fad, do the natural thing and eat meat

    Soy protein isolate.

  • Mycoprotein/Quorn vegan fillets is some of the cleanest vegan protein available and builds muscle at double the rate of whey protein

    • Yeah, nah. Still missing that complete protein.

        do go on

high protein veggies/seed - Broccoli, Asparagus, kale, cauliflower, pumpkin seeds, spinach, Sunflower seeds, Quinoa (~14g of protein/100g), and chia seed (17g protein/100g)
    Spaghetti

    • With a high seed diet comes a lot of fibre too. I'm not sure how readily absorbed it will be, and counteracting that with starchy foods might be a good idea. And lots of nutritional yeast.

      Definitely second seeing a dietician

  • semen

    Meats may be…

Sorry I dont mean to be rude, going vegan / vegetarian by choice is a good thing. But if your body can’t process plant based proteins what more can you do?

  • What level vegan is your friend?

  • Being vegan (just like all diets) require a lot of personal study and research, so you dont do long term damage to yourself. Your friend(?) is asking you to get research points from ozbargain. Your friend isnt fit for this diet. Be vegan, but have that cheat day once a week.

  • How about not being a vegan?

There are some Vegan/Soy protein products out there but quiet costly.

Certain amino acids cannot be obtained by vegan diet and that makes body weak, but it is your choice.

If your friend is struggling to get sufficient nutrition because of their crazy diet… then maybe it's time to stop the crazy diet.

Veganism is a borderline mental illness.

  • Eat roots and leaves.

    • Koalas look a little lethargic though amirite?

Chicken. Not really a meat. More of a vegetable with feathers

    • Best comment.

I have often looked at land mammals and thought, yeah maybe you're not just food, but look at fish, dumb fish with no hands or feet… Fish were obviously made to be food.

      • we evolved from those dumb fish lol

realistically there are n't many species that are made for a reason other than to be part of the food chain. Bee's probably one of the few exceptions given they pollenate. Other animals perhaps…based on them transporting seed far distances….

        Bee's, worms, mushrooms, coral..maybe a few others…bats?

Realistically the rest of us if we were wiped out wouldn't change the face of the earth all that much.

        • Humans in particular if wiped out would change the face of the earth plenty. Of course I don't want that to happen, but if animals knew what we knew, surely they would want that to happen. Maybe it's us against them after all.

          • @ozbjunkie: Sorry..meaning nothing would happen in a bad way. Stay against..bees or plankton disappearing…fundamentals to most life on earth lol

            • +1

@Lv80: Yeah I knew what you were saying. I just took the opportunity to be young and edgy.

I guess you're right regarding most life, except bees, plankton, etc but I'd imagine that there are a whole series of other animals which are more important to the biosphere than we think… Even if their contribution is just keeping other animals from overcrowding their environment. For example, I think I read that sharks were important, but I forget the reason.

But yeah if you can fry it it's food, that's my criterion.

              • @ozbjunkie: lol..i think im too old to even try to attempt that lol

I imagine you are right. Sharks are an apex predator…so they manage the rest of the food chain. Similar to Lions and other carnivores.
Not sure if they are important to sustaining life as to maintaining the balance. Though I guess yes, equally important.

        • we evolved from those dumb fish lol

We didn't evolve from those dumb fish. We do share a common ancestor with them that's true - but we also share a common ancestor with all the plants!

          • @trapper: There's actually some theories we did. But how knows. Came from the same pond. Same ancestor for sure. Aint really that much different between everything on this planet.

  • Vegans can usually get around eating animal products by consuming a varied diet of other protein sources but without legumes and nuts that sounds very difficult to achieve. If it was my friend in that situation I would probably try to convince them to eat some dairy products or eggs out of concern for their health.

He can have protein shakes from pea protein every day? I agree with many posters though, perhaps he just needs to be vegetarian instead of vegan so he can have milk protein, his body isn't dealing.

    • Peas are legumes.

  • Tempeh, Tofu, Cottage cheese

    • Tempeh and tofu are made from legumes and cottage cheese from milk.

      • Oh yeah.. I missed out completely.

    incest?

  • Being vegetarian is the next best choice. It opens up a lot more food options while still keeping away from meat.

  • What about plant based protein powders, such as pumpkin seeds?

I read that it is a complete protein source (all amino acid), but not sure how accurate that info is, definitely sounds like a good start either way.
