Wait for next-gen consoles next year. If you don't have a current gen by now then consider waiting.

It's a safe bet both next gen consoles offer backward compatibility, and are <12 months away.

  • Not sure if your plan will work as Amex might not give you the $100 back after Microsoft refunds the difference

For purchases on the Microsoft online Store, you must pay the full amount shown for the Eligible Product at the time of completing the purchase, and the price match difference will be applied as a refund to your card. The refund should show in your bank account approximately 2-5 days after purchase (depending on your bank).

Are you planning on buying an extra ~$70 at Microsoft so you make sure you get the $100 back from Amex?

  • Do you know if you are still eligible for ShopBack if you do the price guarantee online? It says it will refund you the difference

I am not sure. This is what I believe.

Amex will credit you back as long as the sum of all purchases from microsoft exceeds $500. From the time you registered amex microsoft deal up until it expires.

If you got a discount credit back from the credit card charges. Ie. microsoft gives you a discount, and refunds the difference back to your card. That amount will be deducted in the total spending to your amex. (In this case, i believe they will refund back your your bank account,so amex will still show the original purchase price, hence you will get cash back from amex deal on the I pre-price-matched Microsoft price)

If you got a cashrewards/shopback cashback. That does not count towards a discount on charges to your amex card. So the click through cashrewards/shop cashback is a bonus refund. However, the online refund from microsoft may make the cashrewards/shopback transaction invalid. It is up to microsoft to decide if they honor it or not(usually not)

      Hope that helps.
