LG GB-455UPLE 454L Bottom Mount Fridge (RRP: $1099) $777 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman & JB Hi-Fi

480

This fridge is a absolute steal at $799. Price now dropped to $794 $777.
RRP is $1099.
Model: GB-455UPLE

Retravision has it for $798 if you really want to gamble dealing with them. (Franchised and shonky.)

Choice score of 80% which is a lot higher than most Samsung ones. (The only one which scored higher costs $4999.) LG is competing with the likes of Fisher and Paykel, Westinghouse and Mitsubishi.
Average running cost for 10 years is $1170.

This is also available at JB Hi-Fi as a Black Friday deal.

Purchased one yesterday. Every year around this time LG puts this model on sale for Black Friday / Christmas. You don't need to spend the earth to get a good quality fridge.
The only draw back is no humidity setting on the crisper.

    • Then go to JB? Plenty of other options.

Just pointing out that HN are far from reputable

        • Gerry called us professionals - id rather go to a Retravision than HN!

  • +2

I bought one of these 1 month ago, pretty good fridge and cooling.
You can put a lot of produce, drinks, vege, fruits etc. They come out nice and fresh after 1 week.
Its better than the Samsung SRL458ELS model as I have both.

    • I'm curious how it is better than Samsung SRL458ELS. Space or better cooling?

      • +1

        Space

        • +1

Will it fit thru my door?
I bought a different one the other day it wouldn't fit by a few millimetres and the handles couldn't come off the delivery guys said so cancelled for refund

          • @capslock janitor: Remove the front door. Fixes the problem.

            • -1

@[Deactivated]: We tried that but one of the sides of the arch where door goes (forgot what it's called..) width is still small

    • @sillycow (or anybody else that has this fridge) Would you be able to measure the exact height? The specifications say it is 1720mm - my cavity is about 2mm short of 1720 so I just wanted to determine if it should fit.

  • In the market for a new fridge. Can you use multiple JB gift cards online to purchase this?

    JB delivery is $55

    Whats delivery with HN?

    • Delivery shows as $49 for me.

    • Actually scrap it, it’s 5cm too high for my fridge gap, how annoying

      • What's above it? I had cupboards above mine so I just unscrewed about 8 screws and positioned my cupboards higher. Depends on your ceiling height too I guess.

        • Nah I’d have to completely rip the cupboards out above and refit cupboards that are a good 6-7cm smaller. Not a huge amount of effort but then I’m not sure I need a fridge this size anyways. Will cost more in the long run to power it.

  • +2

Yeah I basically have this fridge as well - was top rated by CHOICE. It's the best fridge we've had by a long way - was dubious about bottom mount but it is incredibly good at storing items and has best in class energy consumption. Would buy again as it's a superb appliance.

    • how do you guys access CHOICE recommendation, it was hidden behind paywall?

Bought this fridge over a year ago as it was recommended by choice. Have had no issues with it. I would definitely encourage people to buy this

  • Let me know if you find any 650-750L ones on sale :)

    • Mitsubishi MRLX630EMGSLA down from $3200 to $2400 @ HN. You'll need to ask a sales person for this deal, $2600 if finance.

We were going to buy this but even if we bought 3 of these LGs we would get a minimum of 15 years out of the LG and I doubt the Mitsubishi would last 15 years.

      • You know there is an "associated" tag for deals like this, since you seem to know a lot about HN.

        • I'm not associated with HN anymore. I don't have access to the database or costings like I once did. Not since 2017. I have many close friends who are though.

    • We have the Mitsubishi Electric 743L WX Series 6 Door Multi Drawer Fridge. It's great. Highly recommend.

I bought this fridge last week as well (fortunately it was on sale on the day that my old fridge stopped). So far it's working well. A lot of reviews mention the noise; I can say that it's not completely silent, but is not noisy so far, just a bit of a hum when the compressor is running.

    • did it die without symptoms ?

fridge is the kind of things like car battery

      not sure when to replace

or wait till it dies but have to deal with the inconvenience

      • My old fridge had been playing up for a while. Sometimes it was cold, but not very cold. The seals on the doors were not sealing very well, sometimes. I wonder if it had just been letting in a lot of air and all the vents at the back had iced up. Regardless, it was 10 years old, and with a baby and a pregnant wife I don't have time to worry about whether the fridge is working.

    • +1

Also got the bottom mount LG fridge and can attest to this review

Noise is quite noticeable if the house is quiet at night but on most days we don't notice it doing it's thing

  • +1

Thanks OP, was actively looking to buy a fridge and this is a sweet deal !

  • Any deals on French door, I am after Haier HRF520FHS, is it a good model..thanks

    • I wouldn't touch it with a 50ft pole along with Hisense but that's me. I honestly can't be bothered with fridge troubles.

French doors are expensive, $1400-$2400. I would save a bit and get the Mitsubishi listed above.

      • Hisense? Good TV's right? You don't like the brand…. or their fridges suck? I've been thinking of getting a Hisense fridge.

  • Hi, is LG a much better brand than Kelvinator? I was looking at this Kelvinator https://www.harveynorman.com.au/kelvinator-540l-top-mount-ri… as it is bigger but I will buy the LG if it is a much better brand. Will the JB Hi Fi fridge be the same price in the Black Friday sale as Harvey Norman as it says ends today.

    • This LG is better.

JB has this price now. Not sure when it ends.

      • The LG isn’t in the same league as the Kelvinator (top mount 540l at 419kWh/year. This LG looks to be the budget model, with only a 3.5* rating, compared to 4.5 for the mid range LG’s with similar specs.. So LG wise…390kWh/year compared to 300. A big difference in power consumption in the LG models.

        • +1

3.5 star energy rating vs 4.5 star model is about $20 extra a year to run. Cost of the unit is currently $300 more (GB-455PL at $1099)

This isn't a budget model, the new model has humidity control for the crisper and a tray which extends to allow taller bottles to stand on the shelf above the crisper.

The units themself are the same, plastic door not stainless steel door etc. So you're paying for an energy rating which you won't ever recoup in price vs running costs.

          • @[Deactivated]: You recoup in 15 years.

            • @Bryanalves: Haha there is no way any fridge will last 15 years, not even Mitsubishi which comes with full 5 and 10 year warranty (highest warranty out of any other manufacturer).

You'll average 5-7 years on a model like this.

              • +2

@[Deactivated]: I'll be pretty disappointed if it only lasts 5-7 years. The Whirlpool that it's replacing was 10 years old and possibly still ok - I just don't have the capacity to worry about it after it plays up.

                • @macrocephalic: You should read choices write up of DOA fridges. Over 36% were dead on arrival. Fridges don't last like they once did. Back in the day a fridge lasted 20 years, these days they set your house on fire and don't work out of the box.

Spend $12000 on a Samsung and it will pack up within 12 months. The return rate is extremely high on Samsung. Buy Hisense and you're cooked lol!

Atleast with this fridge you're guaranteed it will switch on out of the box and run for more than 12 months.

              • @[Deactivated]: My last Kelvinator was a handme down from my parents. Combined, it's lasted over 20yrs. I don't expect the same level of durability these days so would be happy with my current LG if it lasted close to 10yrs.

                • @LuffyTuffyFluffy: I think for a $799 purchase 5-7 years is reasonable and is achievable. Who knows, these might last 10 years. Just don't get your hopes up.

    • I generally trust the Japanese and Korean brands much more than the 'old' brands like Whirlpool, Kelvinator, etc. The one exception is Fisher & Paykel - I've always had good experiences F&P appliances.

      • F&P got bought out ages ago. Like 10 years? Forget F&P.

      • You have your countries mixed up. Korea is extremely premature in white goods. Japan has made fridges since 1850s.

        • Up until the 1980's "Made in Japan" was like "Made in China" now. Of course Korea has completely industrialised since the 1950's, so they're pretty new in all heavy industries, but have good reputations in most.

  • +1

Wouldn't it be rather uncomfortable to mount a fridge on my bottom?

    • Yeah…but think of the convenience!

  • +1

    nice deal thanks op!
tempted to buy, but want something bigger
missed out when costco had the samsung sr624 for $999 (plus shipping)

  • +4

If $799 is a steal, then $639.20 was daylight robbery.
Was $799 back in June at Bing Lee eBay and used PONG20 to get 20% off.

Good fridge, no issues - slight hum but seems to be normal.

  • +1

RAC members can also get 5% off at Retravision

  • Hey so this looks great (broadly energy efficient, great value, spacious storage, quality features eg. crisper/humidifier)…

But I'm after a fridge that has all that and adds ice and water spouting functions. Or is that no longer a thing?

    • +2

Then you'll be paying $1400+ on a quality fridge with ice maker. and require about $800+ worth of plumbing if there is no water outlet in your cutout. On-top you'll need to replace the filters regularly and they're expensive.

Alternatively you can get an LG, Samsung or Electrolux side by side fridge which doesn't need plumbing. These go for about $1600 - $1800.
      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/lg-668l-side-by-side-fridge-…

How much is water worth to you?
      All freezers make ice.

      • There's a samsung ~450L fridge at HN right now with a water outlet. I didn't look at it closely though as it's $1100 - and I'm not paying an extra $300 for a water dispenser when a $5 jug works.

        • +1

I had a look at this model, a fair bit of space is sacrificed for the water reservoir, not worth it imho.

  • There are 3 models in the range GB-455PL (stainless steel finish), GB-455BTL (Black steel finish) and the GB-455UPLE ( dark graphite finish).
Bought the SS one last week from Bing Lee $1049 delivered, old fridge taken away and all boxing taken away.
Now given this price here of $800 and the SS with delivery at $1050, I think we did okay, RRP between the two is $450+ delivery.
Also checking the compare on the LG website the SS, Black fridge use 300kWh/per year at 4 1/2 star rating, this model GB-455UPLE uses 390kWh/per year and is rated 3 1/2 stars. Identical in all other specs except finish and electricity.
Hardly notice the noise given our old clunker …great fridge and plenty of space.

    • GB-455UPLE Is different from the other two models you mentioned, the other two has 4.5 stars energy rating

      • just as i said

        • +1

Yes but keep in mind, none of the models are metal door. It's stainless steel finish, not actual stainless steel, it's plastic made to look like stainless steel.

  • +3

If you are in NSW and on the pension or have a health care card you can trade your old fridge in and you can get this for $599+ postage from the good guys-

    https://appliance.environment.nsw.gov.au/products

    • The more expensive model as well - GB-455PL. Good deal if you are eligible.

    • I can see where they're coming from regarding the shelves. A wine bottle would need to be layed down or put in the door.

As for bulky items such as pizzas this is going to be the problem with bottom mount fridges. The compressor is at the back at the bottom so you sacrifice freezer space compared to top mount. Usually the crisper is here so people don't notice it untill they go from top mount to bottom mount.

If you need lots of freezer space then you'll need a side by side fridge. Alternatively a chest freezer.

French door fridges suffer from this aswell.

As for the compressor law-suit we definitely don't have that here. I have mates who have had this fridge for 4 years and never skipped a beat. The compressor over here is 10 year warranty, I understand warranty is basically non-existent in America along with consumer protection.

Thank God we live in Australia!

      • Thank God we live in Australia!

        For now

      • Actually it's 5 year warranty on compressor! I read it wrong.

Either way, this is half the reason I would never buy an expensive fridge. I've seen $12000 Samsung fridges break down in 12 months. Sure, it's covered under warranty but you lose the things in the fridge and without one till repaired.

  • +1

Thanks, OP, bought one. I have a 20 year old Westinghouse branded LG, and it's way past it's expiry date. I should be able to halve running costs with this one.

  • How does delivery usually work? Do they unpack and place the fridge where you want it?

    • +1

Driver turned up … unboxed new unit on back of the truck.
Wheeled new unit in and wheeled the old one out.
Placed the new fridge, plug it in (OFF) and checked and adjusted the apacers so it didnt rock.
      Job done!

Then I had to peel off all the plastic etc (there is a lot of it) and wait 1 hour before turning on and refilling.

  • What’s a good fridge for a water connection?

    Aka ice / cold water?

    • -1

Any fridge will do. Just drill a hole through the fridge and connect water.

Shonky? That's alao an apt description of Gerry Harvey in fairness.

  • Do you know if HN or JB takes the old fridge away?

    • HN and Goodguys takes old fridge away along with all packaging. Not sure about JB.

You'd need to price match in order to buy from the good guys.

    • quick google search of forums found that they do - I just ordered mine and placed it in the delivery instructions to remove the old fridge

  • Can someone please tell Appliances Online to match this price and include free delivery. They seem to be the only ones who offer zip pay.

    • I believe Betta also honour Zip pay. It's mentioned on their site.

  • Retavision is $798 if you really want to gamble dealing with them (franchised and shonky)

Similarly, if you have a JB HiFi remotely in reach, please consider buying there over Harvey Norman. Greedy Gerry is why Amazon AU is 2x, 3x, or more times the price of Amazon US, why we can't purchase spare parts any longer for items previously bought on Amazon US, why those much-cheaper Amazon US items won't ship to Australia now, why we need to use reshippers to consolidate packages and put more time and effort in, AND why we NOW HAVE LESS MONEY TO SPEND AT AUSTRALIAN STORES.

    • -1

You need to get your facts straight.

HN was the only retailer who said they will price match Amazon despite them knowing Amazon won't survive more than 7 years in Australia. No overseas retailer has survived in Australia to date including Daimaru.

Gerry is the reason we won't ever have a BestBuys over here or Walmart. He said to them you come over here and mess with my stuff and I'll come over there and crash your business. It's a long truce which will never be broken.

But even if you avoid giving Gerry your money he owns around 40% of JB HIFI stores, like the physical building so he can just increase rent and every transaction you make in those stores a cut ends up in his pocket anyway. He also owns BedShed, Fantastic Furniture properties and heaps and heaps of others.

Gerry doesn't do Retail. He does assets, advisory and financial services.

This branches from Wagyu farms to race horses to millions in property to.. everything!

90% of things you buy a cut ends up in his pocket. He's worth 1.6 Billion+ and that's increasing every year by millions and is the most successful retailer/advisor in Australia to date.

      • +1

Amazon won't survive more than 7 years in Australia?

        • That's what history has proven.

This time it's very different, online e-commerce vs an actual retail store..

Who knows, will we see Myer/David Jones stores close for Amazon stores?

Amazon has a very limited market over here. No white goods, furniture, beds, ovens, TVs, Computers, Laptops, HIFI.
Australian consumers are different they want to see and touch before they buy such items. That's millions lost right there and until they gamble on opening stores it can't really compete.

          Time will tell 🙂

          • @[Deactivated]: You mean Amazon is on track to dominate Australian retail within seven years?
            https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-26/amazon-dominate-retai…

Also HN is not the only retailer who will price match amazon. For example officeworks does even better and price beats competitors (including online shops) by 5% which is renown by ozbargainers

Not sure why you're in love with Gerry but he doesn't have a great rep here on ozb from past history

        • -2

          LOL. Wot a goose. ;-D

      • -2

LOL. What a load of absolute nonsense.

        • -1

Ok buddy. When you buy a $3000 bed from Amazon or a $8000 oven or perhaps a $3000 TV or $3000 couch let me know.

Everyone's transaction history on Amazon wouldn't exceed $400 per transaction currently, that would be a gaming console. Most transactions would be under $100.

It's night and day difference currently.

Just ask yourself, Why can I buy this fridge in ANY retail store but can't on Amazon?

How much are they really losing not selling these items? I guarantee its millions per year. They also can't sell them untill they open stores.

  • Is this haier fridge better with a higher energy rating.
    https://www.betta.com.au/haier-450l-silver-bottom-mount-frid…

    • Haier is bad. It competes with hisense, Beko and Samsung. Massive return rates.

Fisher and Paykel, Westinghouse, Panasonic are in the same category as this LG.

HN sale is now over, $949 now
      JB is still $799
Betta removed the fridge from website.
      Retavision is still $798

Can always price match at The Good Guys.

Deal is almost over for this year.

  • FYI Appliances Online matched this for me, and gave me free delivery/removal. I just jumped on their live chat and asked

    • Delivery timelines?

      • Gave me next day

        • I got told end of December and had to pay shipping… well done! Maybe they got new stock in

  • $794 now. It is worth mentioning that this one is only energy rated at 3.5 stars compared to other LG 454L models with 4.5 stars.

    • Yes and as said. It will take you 15 years to recoup the savings. Running costs is only $20 a year difference. The price between them is $300.

      • According to Pricehipster, 4.5 stars model dropped to under $1k before, $200 difference.

        • So 10 years to recoup the money.. Which will never happen.
