Basic Bargaining Tips

I am thinking this is the best place to post this.
Post your bargaining tips such as waiting till july for end of financial year or waiting till end of year for bonuses with tvs.

  • Hmm would it work the same way as buying new cars if youre buying something thats pretty pricey? For example, haggling with the sales guy at the end of the month, rather than the beginning, since they have sales targets to meet?

    A simple technique my wife who hates haggling uses, is to ask the store person if this is going on sale soon.

    1. it tells them she is price shopping, so isnt ready to buy unless get an "incentive"
    2. if it is they can get the deal, but maybe next week
    3. They can offer a lower price.
    4. Can start the discount discussion.

    Not ideal, but it does help in many cases and its pleasant without having "haggle" - ie saves face for all.

      This is a very good way, but may not work everytime. Sales person are becoming smart these days. So lets say, the TV is for 2400. Sale rep will not go below 2200 or say 2100. Then he will say, come to me, when u r ready, we will definitely do "Something". They don't open all their cards. So you need to have more ways to get best price. If he is a nice one, this one may works.

      So, If this does not work, here is what I did for getting my TV this time.
      1. First did a research, which TV I want the most. Sales rep will never give u a best opinion. They will sell, for which they have more commission and have in stock.
      1a. Also note a good tv, but a bit old and u think, most of the stores dont have them ( call it X).

      1. Then Try out at store A with their minimum price. say if he goes till 2100 as his last price.

      2. Go to store B and ask for the price of the TV, which you dont want( remember X ?). He will say, this is not in stock or if it is in stock, then tell them you thought it was nice but it does not look nice now :)
        Go to the TV you want and ask him for the price. for example if they say 2300, tell them Store A have price 2100 as their standard price and might go to 2000 very easily.
        Ask Store B rep now, what he can do the best. If a very good price is given, you can think of getting this one instead ( Now sales rep target is to give u a best price for a tv, you dont like or need)

      I got my LG 3d from last price of 2200 in Harvey to 1800 at Binglee, which retailed around 2400 that time.

    Tell the salesperson that if they give you a good deal you will post the receipt on ozbargain and they can expect to be ozbargained within 20 minutes.

  • online research.
    getprice.com.au or similar.
    get the cheapest price, print out the add/catalog/page of the cheapest shop and show it to the salesperson.

  • always be friendly and know when to give up and move on to another store.
