This neck-wearable speaker lets you listen to music, podcasts, or your TV directly over Bluetooth or via the included Bluetooth aptX-LL transmitter.

Techmoan compared these to the Bose and a few others. Sound quality is decent but people with … larger necks… may find it a bit harder to slip on.

  • Some colleagues of mine have this. A tad bit heavier and less flexible than Bose one but still a good speaker.

  • I don't really know what the use case is for this thing.

    • Me neither. if you want to listen music on the go, headphones is better as you won't disturb anyone else. Then if you are alone, a traditional speaker would do just as good.

      • More comfortable than headphones, more portable than a speaker. There's a techmoan video where he describes his use case. I mean people must use them, they keep making them.

Not everyone lives alone at home though. Having the speaker 10cm from your ears means they don't have to be turned up loud, so you won't disturb your flatmate/housemate/spouse/kids/parents when you're watching TV at night.

They can also be good for people with hearing loss. Instead of turning the TV up super loud, just wear the speaker and you'd be able to hear it clearly without annoying anyone else at home.

Perfect for those long haul flights.

  • Tried this type of product. So dumb.
Good for people who need to move around too much to use a portable speaker, but can't wear headphones because they need to hear ambient sounds for safety, but don't work around other people so this secondary sound won't annoy them.

I dunno what person satisfies all these conditions, maybe posties? Let's brainstorm other ideas below.

Ooh, I have another one, 'professional' dog walker?

      Professional Public Transport Nuisance?

      • Doesn't actually satisfy the constraints above. But yes I agree not suitable for public transport. Maybe you could have said "bus driver for the deaf" but really that is a little contrived, and a portable speaker would do.

You need to expand your horizons a bit.

These ship with a Bluetooth transmitter that you can connect to your TV. So clearly one of the use cases is to watch TV without disturbing anyone else. If you live alone that's probably not an issue, but if you live with others or have a family and watch TV late at night, having the speaker 10cm from your ears instead of 3 meters away means you don't have to turn them up loudly to hear clearly.

People who like listening to podcasts, videos, or TV while doing a task like cooking could find this useful too. You can't wear headphones as you need situational awareness, and unless you turn your speakers up, local noise can easily drown out what you're listening to thanks to the inverse square law.

If you're walking around your home doing some cleaning, you're probably going all over the place. Headphones could work but some people would like to hear what's happening around the home - is a kitchen timer going off? Someone at the door? Dog barking? Child crying? A wearable speaker would let you listen to your music or podcast as well everything else.

As with just about everything, different people have different preferences and usage scenarios. You could say why waste money on this? Just use headphones while walking around your home. Someone else could then say why waste money on headphones? Just turn up the speaker on your phone. Then someone else could say why waste power? Don't listen to anything while you're cleaning your home.

      • Bluetooth headphones will be much better for watching tv, and a Bluetooth adaptor for wired headphones is cheaper than this device.

A stay at home parent is a good suggestion.

Most of the rest of your comment just comes off as strangely bitchy.

"Expand My horizons"? I'm the one asking for an interesting brain storming game. You don't have to play if you don't want to play nice.

        • Bluetooth headphones will be much better for watching tv, and a Bluetooth adaptor for wired headphones is cheaper than this device.

That's a matter of preference. Headphones means you won't be able to hear what else is going on around your house. Don't forget to get aptX low-latency headphones if your TV doesn't have built-in Bluetooth that can compensate for the delay.

That's a result of your original post which comes off as strangely snarky:

          • @eug: Sorry I hurt your feelings with my comment that this product was dumb. I didn't know you were so invested. I apologise.

            • @ozbjunkie: Even more snark? Cute. If you can't take it, don't give it. :)

              • @eug: As above, I was just wanted to play a fun brainstorming game. But you didn't like the game apparently.

                • @ozbjunkie: Oh, if you were actually genuine about it, then I apologise. The way I read it sounded like you were being snarky, saying it's dumb then trying to get other people to come up with "dumb" scenarios like 'professional' dog walker and bus driver for the deaf.

Such is the nature of reading comments on a forum without being able to read intonation or facial expressions I guess.

                  • @eug: Yeah I was serious. Those dumb scenarios were legit the best I could come up with.

                    • @ozbjunkie: What about.. lollipop workers? They might as well just get the Bose version though, cost probably isn't much of a concern for some of them!

Ridiculous. Usual knobs will get it for the "wow" factor just so they can get attention.

  • looks like a "personal massager"

  • Price just dropped to $170.51.
