Linksys WRT160N Wireless Router for $29 at OnlineComputer.com.au (Free Pickup in Sydney)

310

** UPDATE: while stocks last (seems like a fair bit left). I was able to swap the version 2 I picked up for a version 3. Look for the box with orange and 'wireless productivity' on it (version 2 has green on the box) **

Just got a brochure in Sydney's Central Station tunnel for the OnlineComputer.com.au 'End of the Months Sale' which showed their Facebook Special of a WRT160N for $29 for liking their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/OnlineComputer/20089446660852… in case).

*Limited to 1 per customer only.

Seems like a pretty decent draft N (N300) wireless router with pretty decent reviews. No gig ethernet, no USB port and only 2.4GHz, but might have support for DD-WRT if it is not version 2 (the website doesn't say what version it is, only version 1, 1.1 and 3 are supported). I'm hoping it's not version 2 because I want to use it as a repeater for TV/PS3. Was waiting for another deal since I missed the WRT54G2 from Wireless 1 for $19 delivered which is DD-WRT supported.

No free delivery, but still seems pretty cheap - cheapest pickup I saw on staticice was about $60. You can pickup from the Sydney store in Capitol Square (you can also order online and select instore pickup and pay instore).

Good deal… But I'm sick of all this facebook crap. Meh, I'll just use my secondary facebook account. Good to have one for all these OzBargain fb deals :P

Pretty low down to force people to use their Facebook accounts for this. I definitely avoid doing this.

    • "Meh, I'll just use my secondary facebook account"

now why didn't I think of that ?

URL in title should be OnlineComputer.com.au, not ComputerOnline.com.au ;-)

      thanks, changed =)

Around $13 for delivery to Perth.

Minus 1 for the Facebook crap though : (

  • Is it possible to use this as a range extender? I have a wifi router in my living room but the signal in my room is weak. I have ethernet ports here.

    • +2

Yes, you can do it with any wireless router than runs DD-WRT or OpenWRT.
See OP comment's about DD-WRT support.

      • +2

But, as OP said. version 2 is not supported. Has anyone bought (picked from store) it and confirm if it is version 1 or 3.

  • $11 shipping to Melbourne

    • -1

I think they are seriously sending it on a ship

  • Can you just put the order through without liking their facebook page?

    • it worked for me. I think they could only check if you picked up from the store, but I don't think they would. I think it's just to promote their facebook page.

    • LOL… just picked one up from the store… and yes, they did check facebook.

      PS. It's version 2.

      • Mine was also version 2, but I emailed them and they said they have version 1 that you can swap it for as long as the box is in good condition and all accessories are there.

        • was able to swap for a version 3

  • Note that AFAIK this router is only Draft N. I run DD-WRT on mine (v3, refurbished from Amazon) and have not had any issues.

  • No way, I just bought this today for $60 bux from another store. Ahh, I don't wanna drive back to refund it >_> This is a great deal.

  • Good deal!

  • Does it have voip?

  • Can I reflash this with Gargoyle..?

  • Obsolete but good deal.

  • So would this work as a xbox wireless adaptor?

  • We have one of these, DDWRT reports a lot of TX errors, the revision I have has 32MB of RAM!

  • Great deal! But personally I will stray away from Linksys. Their QC is so bad (my friends still working at computer shops says Linksys has the highest amount of failures compared to the rest) and their RMA service is just as bad.

I've tried RMA-ing my router and 1 year later, they still have yet to refund me my money as they don't have anything similar to the item i had (WRT-54GP2). Oh yeah, their RMA center redirects to Philippines and sometimes it's hard to understand what the guy is saying.

Linksys has earned a lifetime ban from me.

    • what would you recommend as an alternative in this price range?

    • I too would like to know what your alternatives are for this price range. If you are going to spew these brands;

      1. D-Link
      2. Netgear
      3. TP-Link
      4. Asus
      5. Billion
      6. Netcomm (getting better, but still expensive)
      7. XyZel

Then you've probably based your judgement on a pretty biased set of results. AFAIK, Linksys products have way better uptime and reliability than the abovementioned brands, within the same price ranges. Please quote the model you have bought and then we can make a more informed opinion. Thanks.

        1. I did quote it. WAG54GP2.
        2. I did say it's a great deal, it is really cheap. During the early 54G era, their QC was ok. Do some research and you'll realise yourself that they do have some issues with their new generation routers. This information may be biased, but with friends who work at computer shops giving such stats (could be because they are cheap and sell better?). I won't take my chance anymore.
3.I can't recommend you alternatives as i'm out of touch. I do have experience with Linksys (4 routers) Netgear(2), D-Link (2), SMC (2) TP-Link(1), Asus(1) and Billion(1). All of which were pre N era. I'm currently using a Billion 7800N which is great but it's almost 8x the price. Of which had Failures: Linksys - 3, Netgear -1, SMC-1.

Personal experiences with their RMA have left me with a distaste for Linksys, combined with their bad QC these days. Lifetime ban from me.

        • I must apologise for not reading thoroughly. My experiences with Linksys has never been bad, or others whom have used them. They are generally more expensive than the rest (other models).

Originally, Cisco had put in a lot of investment to push Linksys into a premium consumer brand. I know lately they have adjusted their policy back to concentrating/focusing on their green boxes (business grade equipment).

  • Shipping within Sydney is about 8 dollars. The cost of my bus fare is as much. Interesting times we live in.

  • I can confirm that my version is version 3 and so you can put ddwrt on it.

    • So, did you have it earlier or you just bought it from onlinecomputer?

      • +1

Got it today from onlinecomputer. Took off the plastic, opened the box and flipped over the router to check it.

        • Thanks

        • really? that's good. I picked up mine and it was version 2. I emailed them and they said they only have v1 and v2

  • Just a warning about the Linksys returns system:

This is the only time I've dealt with them so hopefully it's a one-off but I picked up my router today and plugged it in to find it failing to power-up. No lights, I figure it's probably a defective power supply but jumped onto the Linksys online support a moment ago and was informed that not only had the warranty associated with my serial number expired but that it had previously been returned with a faulty power supply. Go figure.

Returning it to the store now.

(for what it's worth now the deal is over mine was also v3)

    • Is this store reselling 'refurbished' units? Just speculation. Go wild!

  • +1

    Received today.

Looks brand new. However it is a version 2.

calling them to arrange a refund

  • I got a version 2 here. I was hoping to run DD-WRT.

The plastic wrap that the router was in was sticky tapped in places, but the AP itself looks new.

    • I swapped mine today for a version 3. I emailed and asked and they said they only had version 1 and 2, but when I went to the store they had a version 3. You could try calling them and asking them to check if they have any (I think they should) - they can check by seeing orange on the box instead of green, and the phrase 'wireless productivity' in the orange bar on the front of the box. If you really can't get version 3, they should also have version 1 which runs DD-WRT. Good luck!

  • Just picked one up today. You can check the SN prefix to find which version it is. I got v3 prefix CSE5.
